pertaining to the deceased Agent Phil Coulson, maybe they could pull a Tupac and resurrect him as an Artificially Intelligent hologram everyone can interact with naturally, similar to Robert Picardo's character on Voyager?

I thought Coulson went out pretty well. Said to Loki that he wouldn't win. Shot him with the prototype gun, had the quip "oh that's what it does". Got to live long enough to speak with Fury. His death spurned the group into action.

I'm just trying to figure out who has a bigger fanbase army: Loki or Coulson.

damn i didnt expect Coulson to be offed since, other than Nick Fury, he's the only other character that ties each Marvel film together. but the emotional impact Whedon intended for his death, whether for the characters or for the audience, it sure as hell worked.

Here's the thing.....

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Coulson is pronounced off screen.... then later Hill calls Fury out on his faking the blood on the trading cards gambit..... so the possibility (However light) is there for Son of Coul to be alive, but in a secure room of the medical area.

though this is more wishful thinking than any possibility. Guess Coulson's main role in the Marvel Universe was just to help tie them together for Avengers.... someone/someones else will be taking that role from now to Avengers 2

I joined here basically because I have been lurking this thread (I found this thread on a random search of my favorite SHIELD agent!), but I couldn't just sit back anymore. I have a question. Nothing spoilery about it, I was just wondering what details of his personal life are supposed to be revealed in the Avengers. You don't get to learn that much about him in the other movies, but apparently he has a conversation with Pepper where she asks him about his personal life? Is that right? I haven't seen the movie so I figured this was the best place to ask.

wrapping it in spoiler because i dunno how spoilerish this is for others:
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

from what i can recall of the convo with Pepper at the Stark Tower, they just exchanged pleasantries, nothing personal like family or such. the closest to personal info that was mentioned there was Pepper addressing Coulson by his first name Phil, whereas Tony was wondering how/ why Pepper would call him that since he thought Coulson's first name was Agent.

but at the Hellicarrier after Coulson died, there was a convo between Steve and Tony and Steve asked if Coulson was married, Tony said no, but he mentioned there was a --something -- that i couldnt understand.

I remember what the scene at Stark Tower fairly well. It's fairly spoilerish for small character details.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Tony & Pepper were chilling with some Champagne and rom/com banter when Agent Coulson arrived to call in SHIELD's consultant for the Tesseract search. Tony refused to let Coulson come in, so the agent called him on his cell phone. Leading Tony to answer it, "Hello, you've reached Tony Stark's LMD...."

Not to be fobbed off by Mr. Genius/Billionaire/Playboy, Coulson overrode the security system and arrived via the elevator. Pepper was all smiles and greeted him by his first name. Coulson had files for Stark, who refused to touch them due to his germophobia. Pepper gave Coulson champagne and took the files, then handed them to Tony. When Stark balked at working with SHIELD she said, "Phil looks upset, I've never seen him so flustered," or words to that effect. It was clear that Pepper and Phil were very friendly, how much so is open to interpretation. As she escorted Coulson out she said, "So how have you been? Still dating that cellist?" To which Coulson replied, "She moved to Seattle...."

Later on in the film we see Tony and Coulson (now it's Phil) on the Helicarrier. Tony says, "So you're dating a cellist? See, even you have a love life!" (paraphrasing because I don't remember the exact quote.

Those exchanges humanized Coulson further so that when Whedon pulled his usual kill the popular guy/gal move his death had more impact. Very manipulative, very obvious, and the one thing I completely disliked about the movie.

Oh, I'd have to disagree.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
The problem is that people see murdering characters to be a cheap way to illicit emotion in the audience. That was not the point of his death. As Coulson himself was saying with his dying breath, the team needed something to avenge in order to bring them together. Coulson was it-- "There's someone else you pissed off. His name was Phil." It was a significant plot point not merely intended for making people sad or even raising stakes, really. With the exception of Banner, all had fairly close ties to him, especially Stark. It was the right time for a death, and it had to be him.

Least that's how I see it. Loved that they did it that way.

That's the way Whedon sold it, to get cover when people pointed out quite rightly that killing off popular characters is a habit he indulges in virtually every project. In fact, it's such a well-worn Whedon cliche that many fans, myself included, knew he would go right back to the well and correctly guessed which character was the sacrificial lamb. That the writer-director has a compulsion for that one trope is rather annoying to me.

Also, the way Marvel is now integrating Agent Coulson into every other medium strikes me as a cynical attempt to capitalize upon the character's popularity now that he has been killed off in the film. They're as much as saying, "Hey, we know you fans love the guy so we've killed him in The Avengers to raise the stakes, but imported him into cartoons and comics to get more mileage out of him." So Coulson is both dead and alive in different universes, sort of like Schrödinger's Agent.

That was exactly what I thought. from a viewers perspective, all we have is Nick Furys word that Coulson is dead and not just fatally wounded. And we know Fury would do anything to get the team together. The trading cards proved that. But at least the Avengers got something to avenge.

It's something to watch out for in future Marvel movies. With Gregg/Coulson such an intricate part of the MCU and now the comic and cartoon universe, I think he'll find a way back in.

I was thinking the same, and I really hope that's the case...then again...

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I'm still in complete denial; Son of Coul is just one of those characters you find yourself completely in love with (I know I am) so his death really pains me, but then again, that's the point of it; the emotional connection and the impact it has in the audience; so I'm divided about it, one part of me wishes that it was all Fury's manipulation and Phill's still alive, but at the same time, that would kinda "cheapen" his dead/sacrifice...I dunno, such a hard call, I do hope that if they bring him back (I can't get enough Son of Coul ) they do it in a badass way that actually makes sense and makes the whole thing even more awesome...

I saw it yesterday and I have to say
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I was not expecting Coulson to die. It really surprised me when Loki stabbed him, but I was expecting him to pull through. THEN, when Fury announced it, it was undeniable he was dead. But, at the very and of the film, when Maria Hill and Fury are talking on the helicarrier, and Hill walks up the aisle, someone in a suit walks down it at the same time. I was sure that was Coulson. I was sure of it! Have a look next time you see it.
In a way, I'm glad it wasn't because it would have cheapened it a bit.

I hate all this waiting around and having to avoid a spoilerific conversation because of not being able to see this movie until next week. I am sad...

It doesn't get better that people have started writing untagged spoilers in threads that aren't marked with spoilers either.

Luckily I'm soon off for dinner and The Avengers but I feel for those that have to wait.

I guess time will tell regarding
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Coulson's possible return. Gregg has been coy in interviews and has vaguely hinted we haven't seen the last of him in the MCU. And knowing Fury, especially how he's been portrayed in the Ultimate line, manipulation and lies are not beyond him.
