All I recall from the Expo in Captain America was Howard Stark's failed hovercar.

The artificial man was the original Human Torch.

I'm thinking this little Easter Egg might ripple into something more significant in future Avengers movies.

I wouldn't mind seeing a film based on the original Human Torch. It would be great to see him interact with Cap and Namor in the 1940s to form the Invaders. They could always have a Cap film set again in the 40s. I don't know if you'd call it a prequel or a sequel. It's not really either. It's easy to do within a tv series where you can have a whole flashback episode, but i don't know how accepted it would be to do that kind of thing in a film series.

While I don't think that Phil Coulson is Jim Hammond/The Human Torch, it's a clever idea. We were never shown what happened to the Torch the next day, when Phineas Horton let air into his vacuum-sealed tube and he burst into flames, taking a whole neighborhood with him. After that debacle and the Torch's subsequent WWII exploits, he malfunctioned and his body ended up in the Mojave Desert. Surely SHIELD would have tracked his remains down and impounded them for study.
Maybe one day Hank Pym will create Ultron, who will discover the Torch's remains and forge a Vision from them. Will he use Coulson's brainwave patterns for the android? Well, with Whedon's hatred of Simon Williams/Wonder Man at play, who knows?

Didn't Brubaker do an original Human Torch book last year? That would actually be cool as a subpot to the next Cap movie, but I doubt they can use that character, even though its not Johnny Storm.

They'd probably be able to use the character, just not "the Human Torch."

I think they're alright to use the title of Human Torch.

They can use it as long as they demonstrate that it's not Johnny Storm.

Marvel's contracts spell out exactly which characters they own and which one ther studios have the rights to use. They wouldn't have had the android Human Torch on display in CA:TFA if they didn't own him; FOX is very litigious and would sue in a heartbeat over any little thing. The fact that Marvel owns the Torch doesn't mean that they'll ever use him, of course. But it would be fun if one day they did an Invaders movie with Cap, the Torch and Namor fighting together in World War II.

Maybe they can use the character Jim Hammond but not the name Human Torch. I think it could be confusing for audiences anyway, although it doesn't seem to have confused comic readers but has always been a nice bit of history. It would be much more powerful though if Marvel did own the FF, because then you could have Johnny Storm discovering that there was another Human Torch before him, or that he named himself after the 40s character.

I fixed your link. ![]() There has been a lot of great fanart about Phil's Captain America obsession. http://ren-ne-rei.tumblr.com/post/22872450943 http://katfuzzmunchkin.tumblr.com/po...rica-plushie-i http://chronaxie.tumblr.com/post/225...-cufflinks-but http://th2p.tumblr.com/post/22573999578 The last one is my favorite.

Yeah, I understand the desire to wish that he was still alive, but this wasn't even an ambiguous character death. This wasn't like Cyclops in X3, or heck, even Ra's in Batman Begins. You could make a better case that Ras survived the train crash by jumping out a window in BB then Coulson still being alive.

Exactly. He was stabbed through the chest and died onscreen. The character was intended to die, he is dead. Anything retconning that will render the sacrifice a little moot.
Still <3 Coulson though. |
