I have it on good authority (made it up) that Platt's character is actually Jean Grey.

Yeah I am actually getting a "JFK" vibe from this and I'm not sure why. Maybe Platt serves as a similar capacity to Donald Sutherland did in that film. BTW factual or not "JFK" is one of my all time favorite movies.

Harry is a mutant, so if Platt is not playing a mutant he couldn't be him. Oh wait, this is FOX, they'd give Leland a tail and optic blasts.

Whoever he's playing, my only hope is that his role is at least slightly relevant. I wouldn't put it past Fox to induce us to that believe Platt's character will be important, but really will be something (frankly) idiotic, like "pedestrian #3". I would really hate that!

I wouldn't be surprised if Platt's role is irrelevant.

I would like him to be a Hellfire Club member since we only have 2 (maybe 3 if Azazel is one). The only non-mutant I can think of though is Donald Pierce and Platt is not a good choice for him. Unless this is misdirection and Kevin Bacon is Donald Pierce while Platt is Shaw.

Pretty sure he's "the man in black". Its the 1960's, so a character like that makes sense. Men in black are always described in that time period as "secret" government officials used to investigate other worldy phenomenon like Aliens, UFO's, monsters, etc. In the case of First Class, that's the beginning of the Mutant Phenomenon.

That would explain it. I wonder what he's going to be doing in the plot though.

This is just a theory (and requires a little creativity), but since Banshee's in the movie, what if Platt's character, the Man in Black, is actually Black Tom Cassidy.

They've already said his character isn't a mutant, so he couldn't be Black Tom Cassidy.

That poster over in the news thread that says he's read the script (questionable I know) says that Platt's character isn't a mutant but he is important to the movie and he's something that no one is expecting.

The first character I thought of as a possibility for Platt would be someone like Agent Fred Duncan, who used to be Xavier's FBI liason in the old books.

Any more speculation on how important this character will be? We've now seen him in a couple of trailers so he will be pretty significant. He looks like he already knows Hank (Beast) really well.

I always thought Oliver Platt's character was kind of based on Fred Duncan

Hmmm this Man-in-Black seems just an ordinary person to me.

From what I've seen in the trailers it seems like this guy is the CIA liaison for the team.

Wasted?

Nah, I don't think so. He served a very important role in getting things moving I think...He was a 3rd tier character anyway.
