Default Syfy's Heroes of Cosplay

...I'm really surprised I couldn't find a thread for this. Has anyone caught this show?

Like most here, I enjoy cosplay, both seeing what others have done, as well as dabbling in it a little myself. While I wish the show spent a little more time exploring the actual design process of suit making instead of the exaggerated drama. That being said, it's cool getting to know some more cosplayers.

I caught the first episode. Seemed like a decent show.

I've seen the first couple eps, and while it's interesting, most of the cast can be extremely annoying. That one chick, I'll admit I'm terrible at names and don't remember any except for Yaya, who couldn't finish her Lulu costume in the first ep but said she wasn't going to compete because she couldn't do it without her boyfriend there, then treated him like crap in the second ep the entire time he was trying to get the electronics on her Tron costume right and then didn't give him credit when she got on stage with it, annoys me to no end. The two "friends" who compete together all the time do nothing but endlessly bicker and it wears on the nerves. There's also the one girl from the second ep who did the steampunk Poison Ivy costume, which was boring btw, and did nothing to get into character on stage and act like just walking out there was enough to win a prize. Even Yaya can bug at times with how elitist she can get about cosplaying.

The only ones I kinda like watching are the one guy who is trying his hardest to win one of these contests, and that one chick who is a host for some show who was just starting cosplaying and did Lydia from Beetlejuice in the second ep, and even kinda called out some of the others about how snotty they can be about cosplaying.

Chloe Dykstra was the one who dressed as Lydia. I've seen some of her Skyrim pictures, so I was excited to see her on the show - she and the woman who dressed as the female rocketeer are my favorite, if only because they're drama free.

The two friends I recognize from that Comic-Con documentary. They seemed far less unhappy in that documentary than they do in this show.

After the second episode, I read on line a bunch of the casts' reactions to the drama aspects...if they are to be believed, Syfy is REALLY editing the show to create the drama - this happens on all reality shows, but it seems as if Syfy is taking it to an extreme level. I'm trying to take that into consideration while watching the show - if you can ignore the cattiness and near verbal abuse, the actual costume stuff is really neat...that and some of the girls and costumes are hot

Which one was the one who was Merida in the first ep? She came off the most likeable to me. Yaya seems kind of annoying and elitist.

Rebecca Denise. She's fun. I'll add her to my list of people who I actually enjoy on the show (Chloe Dykstra and Riki). Rebecca and Chloe not only have a lot of talent and passion but also show a lot of good humor towards the whole thing - I also see Chloe as the viewer's avatar, since she's coming in more as a fan, rather than a career competitor. Riki is also cool; she's got a hell of a lot of talent and I hope she's able to find the career opportunities she's looking for, though to be honest, this "let's make a costume in a week" business isn't giving her a lot of time to really be critical of her work. She could easily be a professional designer/fabricator, but she needs that last 10%
of time and energy to really push herself. The demands and time constraints of the show/contests don't really allow for that.

Yeah, Yaya DOES seem to be very elitist on the show...I guess that comes with being the "queen" of cosplay, even though I've never heard of her before watching the show. After the second ep (I think) - the one where they all appeared to have an argument about who should/shouldn't dress up depending on looks, I read up on her...while she comes across as very elitist and stuck up, her persona outside of the show seems to be totally different - very passionate yes, but also far more accepting and supportive of all who want to cosplay.

The dude is ok - I think he takes it a little too seriously in comparison to what he actually accomplishes. His level of quality is really uneven; it looks like he spends all of his time on one aspect of his costumes (ie a helmet or gun), and then throws everything else together - his steampunk stormtrooper could have been really cool - the helmet looked awesome, but everything else looked like he simply spray painted football pads, which is frustrating, since he obviously knows what he's doing.

I also wish that there was a better balance between the genders - having half a dozen female cosplayers and only one male cosplayer makes me feel like SyFy is really trying to use the sex factor to sell the show, which admittedly works a little on me, but does kind of cheapen the whole affair - especially when you add in the emphasis on (and fabrication of) drama. I dunno...I definitely have a love/hate relationship with the show. It has a lot of potential, but SyFy doesn't seem to trust the subject, and their attempts to cover for that only hurt it.

Finally caught the last ep. Those two *****es who did the Fushigi Yugi costumes did nothing but reinforce my negative opinions on them. That one took forever to get her costume together again, also yet again blaming everyone else but herself. Then the other went out of her way to diss the Becky girl, who's been nothing but positive to everyone since the show started, and act all high and mighty about herself, when she sucked hard as Poison Ivy on her first ep. Served them right to have the one costume fall apart on them right in front of the judges.

It's not doing itself any favors by only showcasing ONE male cosplayer. I'll admit, all the cosplayers I know personally are female, but still! And, with the exception of Yaya, no minorities. These are recent issues that have been addressed in the cosplay community, so having a show that continues to push the idea that cosplay isn't for males or minorities is pretty damaging.

She puts a lot of effort into her costumes, you can tell they are very good quality.

For her this is a business. Also as of last episode I can understand her being short with her team. She is putting her reputation on the line. If her team sucks, it means she will suck.

If I worked hard for years doing something to be respected I would freak out on people who "looked" like they might bring me down.

And she has a nice rack.

I think if YaYa is worried about her reputation she should pick her teams better. The older check is down right annoying and ends up making her husband do a ton of the work (as seems to be a trend with the show). Monika can't act to save her life and is too cocky to take advice. No thanks, I'm routing for the other team.

I've caught parts of this show twice and I don't understand what the point of watching it would be.

I did learn the term "cosplay" and that these people spend way too much time and money on playing dressing up. I do admire the creativity of a few of the people on the show.

I agree with the Yaya judge comments. She is ugly but so are all the other people on the show (there was one woman who dressed up like Wonder Woman who was decent looking). Having no idea who any of these people are in this subculture I have no understanding of their "fame" and notoriety. I remember this one female judge who was super fat and had a Rocketeer type top and just thigh high leggings. She was so hideous to look at but she was strutting like she was some hot stuff. lol I just kept thinking "wear some pants please". At least find a costume that suits your body type.

I'm glad the show points out that these people have some sort of mental disorder just like hoarders or other narcissistic behavior.

I'm a cosplayer and I have no mental disorder attached to it...

Tanin you are mostly likely not an obsessive cosplayer like the ones they feature on the show. You can see how the cosplaying consumes their lives and the strain it puts on their families.

Please don't take offense to my comment about mental disorder and cosplayers. It was limited to the people on the show. I apologize for the unintended offense.
