Just out of curiosity, does anyone think there might be something to this? I always thought the Disney princesses--particularly in the Renaissance era--sent pretty strong messages.

Jasmine's is correct because it's historical. But who does she end up marrying at the end? A beggar. As for Belle, she was considered pretty but also an outcast just because she liked to read. It seemed implied that the other men avoided her for that, Gaston only pursued her because he thought she was as beautiful as him.

The others, yeah, they're pretty accurate from what I recall.. The older Disney films had the fairy tale stereotypes of women. Little Mermaid may be an exception since I haven't seen it for awhile.

There are other reasons. She wasn't royalty, she didn't marry into royalty, and she didn't end up with the male protagonist. I don't know if Mulan is considered one but she at least falls into the last category.

Esmeralda is at the very least a tease.

Jasmine is my favorite Disney Princess. I remember on the show , she fought sometimes. Sista don't need her man to fight for her.

Love the muses, and that's the Gospel truth.

James Woods is great as Hades. As is Danny Devito as Phil. Didn't really realize that Hercules was voice by Tate Donovan until now. I only know of him from his time on Friends. Rip Torn as Zeus is great too. I never realized Charlton Heston was the narrator either. but then again i was barely 12, if that, when it first came out.

The songs are decent. My favorite is probably I Won't Say I'm In Love.
I rewatched it last week and it wasn't as bad as I remembered. I thought it was going to be mediocre and the worst of this era, but it wasn't.

I really liked Hercules (the character that is). He's naive, innocent, and struggles to fit in because of his strength (even after he's trained). Hades is a really good villain but he's a bit too goofy at times which takes away from how intimidating he is. Meg is a bit annoying at first, but she grows on you and the fact that she's a complete 180 from all the other female protagonists is entertaining.

What I didn't like was the pop culture references. The Air Hercs, Herculade, a constellation of Marilyn Monroe, Pegasus acting like a helicopter. That kind of thing sticks out when you watch it now. I know Aladdin had a lot of that with Genie, but it's kind of easier to let that go because you know it's Robin Williams voicing him.

One thing it was missing was a villain song. I would have liked to see Hades sing a song where you get to see more of the Underworld (though they probably would have just referenced the band Styx).

I'd agree on the other songs. They're good, but not like the rest. I Won't Say I'm In Love is probably the best, I especially liked the scene shortly after where Hades realizes what Hercules' weakness is (ie Meg).

When I was looking on YouTube, I saw that I Won't Say I'm In Love replaced this song, I Can't Believe My Heart as the one Meg was going to sing. Both are good but the former fits her better.

Ah, Anastasia. I thought that was a Disney movie for the longest time, and I agree, it's much better. Always had a soft spot for that one.

You guys have now moved Hunchback of Notre Dame to the top of my Netflix queue.

Not a Disney Renaissance film but I just remembered its trailers that used them. I find them a lot funnier now than the first time I saw them.

I recall that being posted a few pages back. I'd like to go. I remember seeing every Disney Renaissance movie in theaters except that. I'm told I did see it in theaters but Aladdin was the earliest I remember and I saw Little Mermaid when it was re-released. Might as well see them all in theaters.

That and Mermaid are getting re-releases. It'll be great that a new generation of kids (and those in their teens and even 20's) will be able to experience these classics. I wish they'd bring back Aladdin, that's the only one I really wish I had seen in theatres.

I remember Aladdin because my dad's company had a special screening for it for all the employees and their families. I think they had one for Lion King, too.

Aladdin needs a 3D release. That cave escape sequence screams 3D conversion.

Aladdin won't be part of the 2013 re-releases, unless Disney adds it to say, December or something.

Monsters Inc. is being re-released in 3D on January 18, 2013 to bring attention to its prequel coming out in the summer. The Little Mermaid will get that pivotal September 2013 spot, and Finding Nemo a year before.

It could use a bit of an update before converting it to 3D. The limitations of the technology at the time are pretty apparent today.

This thread got quiet, time to change that.

I watched Aladdin tonight. As a guy, it's easy to really like this since the main character is just a normal guy, not super strong or an Adonis. The one thing I don't really like is that there are quite a lot of pop culture references, just makes a movie seem a lot more dated and instead going for easy laughs. Most of this is Genie's impression (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jack Nicholson, Arsenio Hall to name a few), hard to really hate it since Robin Williams is great.

I also have to say, Jafar was a great villain. Slimy, menacing, manipulating, never went over-the-top or goofy at times like Hades. He has two really great moments. First, he takes probably the most direct approach of any Disney villain in dealing with the hero. Has him tied up, ball & chain on his ankle, and tossed into the sea (only fails because of Genie). His second is when he has the Sultan tell Jasmine she's to marry him. "I see you're speechless, a fine quality in a wife." Also, I think he's the only villain who kisses the Disney princess (Jasmine's not a bad one to do it with either). His villain song is a parody of the hero's song which I really like as well.

Hope this comes out on Blu-Ray this year since I somehow lost the DVD with the movie (still have the special feature disc at least).

Beauty and the Beast looks pretty good in 3D, especially the last 15 minutes. I forgot how moving it was, and the animation is still impressive after 21 years.

God, the movie's two decades old already? I'm getting old.
