Thor: 3M USD in its first two days in Australia

http://www.deadline.com/2011/04/thor...-1-down-under/

1.5M a day for two days is pretty damn good for an unknown property on a Thursday/Friday down under

Promising news, Chewy. Been worried about the B.O. for a while (such a nerd) - But to beat Iron Man has got to be a good sign.

People need to stop thinking the Fast franchise is some low budget wannabe - It's huge over here in the UK too. When I went to see #4 over here, i've never seen the cinema packed so much in my life.

The good reviews for Thor is one thing, but we NEED it to make a ton of / $'s for us to get more Asgard action.

Finke herself says both are HUGE hits

Fast Five will make more overseas than it does in America. It will also be more front-loaded than Thor by virtue of being a sequel

Agreed. I'll see both (F5 looks brilliantly crap - and that's a compliment)

It's hard for me to get a feel for how THOR will do state-side. Market has been slow so far. If it gets ANYWHERE near Iron Man#1 numbers, I'll be thrilled (and so will Marvel!)

Why are people making a big deal about the FIFTH entry in a pretty successful franchise is making more than the FIRST Thor film?

Besides, that's just in "one" country not the whole word.

Take way 25% for 3D mark up and it's not quite as impressive.

Ticket prices here have are up by $3 since IM1 plus the majority of sessions are in 3D. Just keep it in perspective.

Quite good for Thor. Finke's Iron Man comparison is redundant given the 3D and general ticket price inflation, but it all bodes well.

I do remember the last movie opening huge two years ago but I don't remember how it was in the weeks afterwards. So they did drop alot?

If Thor can even make IM numbers I will be thrilled.

FF4 had a very low multiplier as I recall. Pretty close to 2.0 or 2.1

It made half it's money in it's 1st 3 days then dropped pretty heavily.

Opened just shy of 71M and ended at 155M. A 2.18 multiplier which is pretty pathetic. Dropped almost 62% on it's sophmore weekend. Thor shouldn't have much to worry about.

If it happened in America it would be a big deal. No offense to Austrailia, which is a great country, but it represents such a small portion of the market. You're going to get anomolies like this. I believe the Dark Knight bombed in Japan.

kedrell,

Considering that Thor is "technically" the first out of the gate, I think your stateside number of 155 million is a tad low. Not saying it will, but I see Thor hitting very close to 200 million domestically.

Call it a hunch, but I get a Batman Begins box office feel to this thing. Yeah, that one only came out with an opening weekend of 40 million but it had serious legs. I think Thor's opening weekend will be bigger but I see it having legs. The only reason why I think it'll stop just shy of 200 million is because of sheer number of big films hitting in May. Frankly, there's just not enough screens.

I wonder what would've been Thor's number if Marvel launched the film in March. Nothing connected in March. It was wide open.

Still, I see just shy of 200 million for Thor, domestically.

He didn't say that Thor will make 155 million, but that Fast and Furious made 155 million.

Well, there WAS a reason why The Dark Knight didn't take off in Japan. Controversy within the film is the cause of that.

What was the controversy?

What controversy? Obviously it didn't get released at all in China because it depicted a Chinese accountant as the bad guy, but I think it bombing in Japan was just one of those things. Perhaps they like their action blockbusters to be shiny and/or involve robots somehow.

I'd agree that Thor will probably hover around the 200m mark though. The reviews are positive but not spectacular, so it's hard to say what word of mouth will be like. If it passes 200m then it's a job well done.

Our box office tends to reflect the U.S. one quite often just to let you know. Unlike Japan we both have similar tastes in film. Just keep that in mind.

No way will Thor open behind Fast 5, for one they're not opening in the same week, and for two the other Fast and Furious movies all had over 60% drops in week 2.

I'm a little suprised that the opening was like that since Chris is your guy's homeboy, but take that for what it's worth.

Eh, I still doubt Fast Five will do highers numbers than Thor in America even if they opened on the same weekend.
