Just finished Death Note last nite. I really loved it but I kinda feel like it was a pretty lackluster finale to the series. I mean right there at the end you know it's either gonna go 1 of 2 ways and while they keep you on the edge of your seat for it, no matter which way it went it still just felt predictable. Still loved it though, I just think the series takes a big dive in quality after the death I inadvertently spoiled for WDM. Now I just gotta find another good series to get into lol

Man, I totally forgot about Anime, and kinda giving up on it to be honest since it all seems to be the same, and not as good as it use to be in the past, IMO. At any rate, here is a couple of suggestion from me, and in no real order.
1) 12 Kingdoms 2) Denno Coil 3) Eden of the East 4) Escaflowne 5) Rurouni Kenshin (Manga is better, IMO) 6) Moribito (Female Lead is awesome! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdKiPOkh0K8) 7) Berserk 8) Zoids: Chaotic Century (Later in the series is pretty awesome, IMO) 9) Cardcaptor Sakura (Don't get the American WB one!) Movies: 1) Sword of the Stranger 2) Vampire D: Bloodlust 3) Spirited Away There is a few more, but none I can think of. =) Oh, personal opinion, but NGE is waaaay overrated crap, IMO. 99% of it is a whiny little emo boy. =/ No thanks. -Ali |

I suggest watching Pet Shop of Horrors. It's only 4 episodes, but it's very good.

I recently watched Death Note and it's one of the better animes I've seen. While the ending may be a bit lackluster I still felt it was the right one.Ryuk was my favorite character.

Other recommendations: Durarara! Eden Of The East Gurren Lagann (for you robot fans) Gunbuster 2 (also for robot fans...watch the 6-episode OVA, not the condensed movie version) Ergo Proxy I also recommend that you watch them in the original Japanese with English subtitles.

Another title that some may like is Yumekui Merry, or 'Dream Eater Merry'.
Kind of a Tim Burton-esque thing, but with a much better sense of taste/style, IMO. Great art design and music, and quite emotionally engaging as well.

I recommend the manga of Berserk over the anime. The anime cuts off at about Volume 13 or so of the manga. Mostly due to budget problems and Miura's dissatisfaction with the anime adaption.
Be warned; its excellent dark fantasy. In fact, I actually found myself getting a bit teary-eyed over the whole of Volume 12...no other manga or comic I've read has ever gotten that sort of reaction out of me. It is rather gratuitious in terms of violence and gore. Heads are popped, sex is shown in all its glory, dismemberment and decapitation are aplenty. Rape is also an occurence, particularly a nasty incident where a king raped his young daughter after being psychologically tortured by a prisoner. None of this is done with the intention of it being a hentai, though. There's a solid story and backstory to Guts and all the other characters.

Mentioned before, but 'Gunbuster 2". From the same guy who did Folly Cooly, I believe. 6-part OVA...don't watch the condensed 2-hr version. Kind of a 'Fifth Element' vibe to it, but better.
I think he also did Gurren Lagann afterwards.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Perfect Blue is a great bit of Anime. If Alfred Hitchcock and Walt Disney had corroborated on a movie, Perfect Blue would have been the result.
Ghost in the Shell is another favorite of mine. Good story that keeps you guessing, and the animation is top notch. Streetfighter: The Movie is another I enjoyed. Also the King of Fighters. 2 Anime movies based on video games that are very enjoyable to watch. Just so you know, none of these movies are for kids. There's quite a bit of nudity, violence, and Perfect Blue deals quite graphically with a rape scene. DO NOT LET KIDS SEE THESE MOVIES.

Has anyone seen "5 Centimeters Per Second"? It looks intriguing, but was curious to hear some reviews.

If you want something that has romance with some sci-fi thrown in...check out 'Voices From A Distant Star'. It's about a long distant relationship between a boy and girl that are galaxies apart...and their text messages take years to reach eachother while one is fighting a mecha-war. I think the guy who did it did it all by himself...all the designing and animating, etc. Pretty impressive.

I've been thinking about getting into Neon Genesis Evangelion and I was wondering are the new movies a good introduction into the world or should I start with the old series.

There was an Eva thread around here once, and I dug up my thoughts on it:
