It didn't die as much as MGM, the studio and distributor, did. It was basically shelved when they went under, but after their reconstruction, they'll release it and, I think, two other films that were also completed. Either that or someone else will pick it up, though I doubt anyone else really wants it.

Amazon Prime added 5,000 streaming movies and TV shows to it's service. At no extra cost.

Thanks for the info on Red Dawn. I knew it was out there in limbo, but couldn't remember the details.

I was a big fan of the original growing up and would be curious to check out the new take.

Gots to spread The Chaser love. I highly reccomend everyone here to see it.

And I watched Black Hawk Down for the first time today. Great film. One of Scott's best. He gets it right with his style this time. Tons of great actors too.

The part when they were all running out of the city to get to the stadium was awesome. Just the thought of all those men and what they endured and played by all such great and recognizeable actors makes it pretty special for me.

This weekend in film was terrible box office wise.
Nicholas Cage, oh Nicholas Cage.

http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/hall...4/#more-109284

Quote:
9. Drive Angry 3D (Summit) NEW [2,290 Theaters]
Friday $1.6M, Saturday $2.2M, Weekend $5M
Summit stresses it had U.S. rights only to this Nic Cage loser and didn't produce it. So studio reps let me know in advance not to expect much of anything from Drive Angry 3D at the box office this weekend. But rival studios starting Friday night pointed out that its paltry take could well be the lowest 3D opening ever. (And the pic was even shot in 3D, too.) Summit acquired the American distribution rights to the film from Nu Image Films and the producers on the project. Based on the dismal pre-release tracking, no one expected grosses above single digits even with 3D's higher ticket prices. Meanwhile, Nic Cage's career, once flourishing film career complete with an Academy Award, after this and Sorcerer's Apprentice remains in freefall. Time to become a TV actor.
This weekend was pretty sad for movies, but the King's Speech is rising, which is pretty good. At least we're done with the garbage season for film and finally get some good quality films out.

Cage just needs to choose better roles.

Reunite with the Coen Brothers goddammit!

I love Cage, but yeah, he needs to pick some better films. I haven't seen this new one, yet, so maybe it's not too bad, but his range for film choosing has been from mediocre to downright awful after Adaptation.

I want the studios to stop forcing directors to use 3D too. It doesn't make a movie better and doesn't help get butts in seats. Directors should use 3D when they want to use it.

I think a lot of that depends on how expensive it is to upconvert a film to 3D. I doubt it really puts more butts in seats, but it boasts overall dollars made at least some, and if it's not that cheap to do, it's something they'll probably still keep doing.

It's losing steam though and Drive Angry is proof.

Well, I don't know about that, honestly. It could just be the fact that no one really wanted to see Drive Angry. I saw almost no hype for it prior to release.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I just see audiences continuously getting fed of it (I don't mind good 3D).

It's hard to judge that, though, since we usually don't get break downs of how many ticket sales came from 2D, and how much from 3D, at least not that I'm aware of.

I don't think Drive Angry is people are sick of 3D. People are Sick of Nicholas Cage dumb roles.

I guess that makes more sense. I don't mind 3D, but like I said, I hate when studios force 3D on directors, especially post-conversion 3D (unlike Drive Angry).

I don't know that Drive Angry indicates people are sick of 3D, but the gimmick seems to have worn off a bit. Just a year or two ago, people would head out for the interest in 3D. The thrill seems to be wearing off a bit in the sense that just 3D won't get people in seats.

It's all about using 3D properly, if a film is a spectacle then yeah why not shoot it in 3D but it all goes to the director. I prefer them using IMAX or 3D Cameras for those big blockbusters.

I'm glad that IMAX is getting bigger. It should be used much more often for big films, especially since the technology is getting better and not as loud.

Two bits of weird film news:

First, we knew this was coming.

Penthouse opens 3-D porn channel in Europe

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/01/p...three-dimensi/

Quote:
Penthouse already promised its US audience a 3D channel in the second quarter of this year, but, for whatever reason, it's dishing the goods to Europeans even sooner -- as in, right now. March 1st marks the pan-European launch for Penthouse 3D, an all-new channel that will be composed of "100% Full 3D Native HD" content, which, judging by the preview videos available online, looks like a classic case of passive-glasses 3D. Still, Penthouse says it's been shooting in 3D since last summer in preparation for this launch, so we don't expect there to be a content shortage for those who prefer a little more depth to their adult entertainment.
And this:

James Franco and Harmony Korine Get Involved in Real Gang Fights

http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/new...ang-fights.php

Quote:
You might know Harmony Korine as the writer of Kids, which was a disturbingly frank and exploitive look at urban adolescence. Maybe you know him from his direction of Gummo, a disturbingly frank and exploitive look at poor, white culture in Middle America. Maybe you remember his Julien Donkey Boy, which had Werner Herzog spraying a kid with a hose for five minutes and doing Tai Chi while wearing a gas mask. Or maybe you would even recognize him as the weird little guy who asks Matt Damon if he wants any of his ass in Good Will Hunting. Regardless, Harmony Korine is someone who is constantly exploring the weird, always living on the edge of what society will accept; and now he’s hanging out with James Franco. Uh-oh.

So what have these two been coming up with while spending time together? They’ve decided they want to make an art film about street fights that will include a real gang brawl. A New York Post source was quoted as saying, “They are looking to film two actual street gangs doing a fight scene. The twist is they want the two gangs to fight, using real knives. The production team is panicked that they’ll end up with blood, injuries and potentially dead bodies on set.” Somebody should probably separate these two before something bad happens. Or go the other way and have them work on something with Charlie Sheen and Nic Cage that will blow all of our minds.

Korine had already tried making a similar project with street magician David Blaine called Fight Harm that featured Korine fighting strangers in New York City, but he was forced to end the project because, as Korine is quoted as saying, “I got a lot of bones broken, I was thrown in prison and I had really bad court costs.” Could we see Franco adding some hospital stays to his long list of things he is doing that people talk about? Or maybe this recent trend of public celebrity insanity will all climax with an actual dead body. Either way, stay tuned, because there’s sure to be more goofy news to come.

Although, some things don't have to be THAT in your face. I need to give this some more thought ...
