I'm not sure whether this is supposed to be a joke or serious. Because, if it's serious, I am. And if it's joking I probably missed the whole joke.

I haven't gone to a salon in 3 years, and last two times was to get my hair donated. Obviously there was a long break between those cuts....There's usually a surcharge for thick or long hair, and I've got both. ![]() But for my wedding, I figured I can splurge. If I can't get my hair to curl, at least it'll have a nice cut!Quote:
![]() At the other forum I'm on (which is populated mostly by middle-aged women), their makeup/hair thread makes me feel bad about not starting a nightly eye cream ritual since I'm almost 30. There are 30-somethings there who are already buying $80 anti-aging creams!

Meatball and cheese. On rye. And don't be wasting any of the real estate with any of that green rabbit-food crap.

Okay I have a serious question to ask you lovely female hypesters. It pertains to writing female characters. What qualities do you women like best in female characters? Relatability? Being able to keep up with the guys? Does it matter how feminine a character they are?
Why do you all think Hollywood has struggled to create a successful female superhero movie? And if any of you watched The Hunger Games and like it, where do you all think they went right with a female protagonist that other Hollywood movies went wrong with? |

There are tonnes of different kinds of female characters, and the qualities that make them work would all depend on the context.
In something like The Hunger Games, it's of course neccesarry to make sure she 'keeps up with the guys' in terms of physical ability AND emotional strength. But that isn't always true, and isn't always a requirement of likeable female characters. To me the most important aspect is self respect/self worth beyond 'their men'. Something that a character like Bella Swan just really never seemed to have for me (sorry, she's just the most prominent example for me of how not to portray a woman). The Hunger Games had that down. Which is why I liked Katniss.

Thanks for the responses so far. I've heard about the Bechdel test. What is your gripe against it?

![]() But I suppose it depends on who's during the interpreting. I'm fine with women talking with each other about men if the plot revolves around men. Which means like, 99.9% of Hollywood movies. Women talking to each other about relationships with men make me .

Parker Wayne, as with hopeful dreamer, I say that the character's strengths and qualities depend on the story and can't be narrowed down to a short list. I think the things to avoid are easier to list.
Why do they have problems? Bad writers who try to pass off 'sexy' as a personality or those that just get kidnapped. I didn't really like The Hunger Games movie but I liked the book a lot. Something just didn't click for me in the adaptation. But Katniss is very well done in both. What did they do right? A) She wasn't stupid B) She didn't need a man but she wasn't man hating, a trope writers often fall into when trying to make a female character look tough C) She didn't need saving D) She wasn't just a love interest E) She had a personality F) She wasn't boring G) She was just generally pretty awesome Also, now I can think of two female comic book characters that got nailed in their adaptations: Catwoman in TDKR and Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass. Not leading characters but it's a start. If they want to get a good female-lead CBM, look no further than Catwoman from TDKR. Give us a spin off about her before TDKR. Now, you may ask, why am I singling out Catwoman here? Two words: Jonathan Nolan. If any of you watch Person of Interest and have seen the episode "Relevance", you'll know what I mean. For those who haven't, it's an episode written and (in his debut) directed by Jonathan Nolan devoted to setting up a female government agent who takes down terror cells and, when the government tries to have her killed, goes rogue. She has a bit of help at the end for something that no person, man or woman, could do by themselves but overall she was on her own. And not just that, she was a well written character. Get Jonathan Nolan to write and direct a Catwoman movie and there you have it, an awesome CBM with a female lead. I'd say Batwoman too but I'm sure they'd find some way to screw her up. No, she's a prominent example of how not to portray a human being. Even planks of wood with a wig are offended by her.

![]() Who is you're favourite female character of all time? Mine is Lois Lane. I mean, there are occasionally quirks in interpretations I don't like, but on a whole she's a fantastic example of how to portray a women in a 'man's world' who still maintains femininity and actually gains respect from co workers.

And, to answer your question, I really, really love Batwoman (Kate Kane). Not sure whether or not she's my favourite of all time but definitely my favourite from a comic book. I'll just go with her though for now.

Yep!
Don't worry about it, it is the internet after all. I could very well be a time travelling unicorn with a caffeine addiction, five legs and a calculator fetish. We don't have a little gender marker below our avatars anyway so it's an easy mistake.
