This can be used to talk about anything Polaris!!
To start off a topic...

"Does any1 think Polaris is under used"

she appears in comics, shes currently in space but she never seems to be pushed into the limelight that much.

so what does everyone think of the second lady of the x-men?

does she deserve some light
or are you happy with her in the background?

I love Lorna, I've always had. She had more of a spotlight when she was in X-Factor, she so totally deserves more focus on the main titles. Now that she is free of the "crazy" she should be on the X-Men, although a monthly Starjammers ongoing doesn't sound bad at all...

she's sort of bland. I think she was meant to be a side order, not a main character

I like Lorna but she always seemed like Jean-light. I wish they'd use her more bc she has potential as an A-lister

except that wasnt Polaris. The costume and hair (which she kept after Malice) were just horrible. Lorna was at her best when she joined X-factor. The one thing I hate about Lorna is that she can never stand on her own two feet without having to lean on a man. Whether it be, Havok, Iceman, Magneto, etc... She seems to fall apart and go crazy when left alone

I don't really dislike Polaris, although I have no special fondness for her. PAD's version is undoubtedly my favourite of her though.

That was the definitive version of her and the only one worth taking seriously. She's been a mess for the most part written by most writers. I would have to say her recent stint with the Starjammers was the best we've seen of her since the mid 90s

um...duh..she was out YEARS..DECADES before Claremont even came to the book..both her and Havok (and Mimic) were the first generation of second generation X-Men

how is htat a little known fact? She was created back in the 60s and was around with the original X-men. Its common knowledge that CC came on the book right after the Krakoa incident which Polaris was already an X-men for quite some time

She is only bland when she is written as Havok83 said, Jean-light. She was originally written as a darker and edger character then Jean in the 60s, but that was forgotten in the 70s and 80s.

She certainly should be a character of importance to the Marvelverse and I think under the hands of the right writer she could and should be an A- list character.

What is keeping this from happening? I think some of it is Marvel, but most of it I think is that many writers over the years don't seem to have a great emotional investment in the character or even a strong image and personality for character like they have in their heads about other long time X-characters.

I only staring reading comics about 5 years ago, after having been an x-fan since i was little from watching TAS.
so i havent read many comics where polaris has been in them.
but my fav polaris stage was this run...

i loved the costume when drawn by salvador and i loved her personality.
it was the time when she was abit crazy. it added some thing different to the character, and i loved when she disagreed with xavier.

i think there is lots more we could see from Polaris, she has the links to Magneto (though i dont want a "magnetos my father" plot),

i feel because there is no set personality for her, it gives the writer a chance to mold polaris to their liking.

Austen did a really good job with her in that one. She had a set of beliefs that made her different from Xavier and they clashed based on their different set of beliefs.

I think there is lots more we could see from Polaris, she has the links to Magneto (though i dont want a "magnetos my father" plot)

As one of the X-books editor Lowe said this week in an interview, when they finally get to doing Lorna's origin story we can be sure it will be a really big deal. Its actually been eight years since Lorna last spoke to Magneto in the 616 and until Marvel finally has Magneto tell of her origins no writer is going to have the characters anywhere near each other in the 616, because there are too many questions that Marvel wants answered in a big Magneto Origins tale, not beforehand.

Also, Chris Yost sent a message to Lorna fans a few weeks ago saying there are future plans for the character so we shouldn't worry.

Emperor Vulcan really was a dream come true for me, as I got to have Alex, Lorna and Rachel seriously whip some a$$ - in space... two of my favorite things (space, and kicking a$$).

And I wouldn't worry too much about your favorite character. There are plans, from even before I came onboard. And hey, its a Summers brother, the daughter of Magneto, and the Phoenix. I think they'll be okay.

Plus, Ch'od's alien ferret is out there somewhere plotting.

The storyline with Alex and Annie was one of the worst for her. But still, like I said she had a personality which is more than I can say for her during Milligan and Brubaker's runs who wrote her bland, generic and pretty much boring

Austen's run lasted from 2003 to the end of 2004. You can't even come close to comparing Lorna during the first year of Austen's run to that of the second year. Austen in the first year of his run made the age old writers mistake that Marti Noxon made on Buffy made during season 6 of airing out all the writers personal relationship issues with the characters they are writing.

He turned Nurse Annie into his own wife as he told fans at a convention and Lorna into one of his old girlfriends during in 2003. But, Lorna in 2004 was a very different character. She was a heroic almost "one man X-team" as Austen said, but she was still a character with an edge. But, what he did with Lorna in 2003 overshadowed what he did with the character in 2004. Few remember heroic Lorna in 2004 in Uncanny and New X-Men, but everyone remembers crazy Lorna at her wedding. Some of the best written Lorna since the 1990s we had in 2004 and its a shame it was so overshadowed.

But still, like I said she had a personality which is more than I can say for her during Milligan and Brubaker's runs who wrote her bland, generic and pretty much boring

She was certainly very generic and boring during Millian's run and even worse in RAFOTSE. It took Austen a year to find a decient balance with Lorna. But, all that got thrown out the window for several years. Yost gave the character somewhat more edge in EV, but she still came off as the girl behind Havok, which I guess is only natural considering she is just there to help him against Vulcan.



But, as I said earlier in this post, Lorna in 2004 was quite well written. But, fans really from her wedding onword through 2004 and all the way into 2005 and 2006 kept screaming about crazy Lorna and that helped pressure the writers to keep toning the character down to the point where she was bland, boring, and generic as you said. Lorna without any edge is simply a filler character as another poster on this thread said and certainly isn't interesting enough to generate the fan interest to ever become an important character in Marvel eyes.

Derek Brunell makes a guess with regards to “X-Men: Legacy” – or is this just a wish? Let’s allow him to explain…

Any chance we will get an origin story for Polaris, Peter Milligan promised us her origin story a few years ago at a con but he was taken off X-Men and it never saw print. Since ‘Legacy’ is going to be revisiting the past it seems like the perfect book for this.

LOWE: You won’t see Polaris in “X-Men: Legacy,” but she’s not gone for good. When we get down to finally filling in her origin, you can be sure it’ll be a big deal.

And speaking of Polaris, John Crowley (along with several other fans) wrote to me with questions about the status of her and her associates.

Will we be seeing a resolution to the Shi’ar civil war by the end of the year? I thought I had read earlier that “Emperor Vulcan” was supposed to be the final act of the whole story with the Summers (at least for a while). What changed? And when will we see what happens with the Starjammers, Havok, Polaris, and Rachel?

LOWE: As the person who wrote the solicit text for “Emperor Vulcan” and did a lot of interviews about it, I don’t remember reading or saying that it was the final act of the Summers’ story. We always saw it as a middle chapter. As for when you’ll see them again, you’ll just have to wait and see.

Well I loved that plot line, but no it wasn't Austen's idea. Austen did an interview a few months back to answer some lingering fan questions that people keep asking him. You might find this interesting.

Since I hear a lot of these questions over and over again, I thought I’d just answer a few and be done with them. These things never get covered in interviews, so it seemed a good place to get this stuff out there because for some reason people want to know.

So here we go.

Justin asks: I really liked your work on Uncanny X-Men, especially with what you did with Polaris. You turned her from a character that was always in the background who I hardly ever noticed into one of my favorite characters and you managed to give her character a nice edge.

One thing I was wondering is how the decision to make Polaris Magneto’s daughter again came down? Was that Morrison or your idea? Because, I know the storyline had its roots in Morrison’s New X-Men 132 back in September 2002.

I believe it was Grant’s. But the roots went much further back, though others can tell you specifically when and where, what issues, what the circumstances were, which page, what panels, what characters, the costumes they were wearing, who lettered it, and possibly even the type of printer it was printed on.

There was a storyline done years ago where she was ‘revealed’ to be Magneto’s daughter, but then it was undone, or proven not to be true, or only happened in one of Scarlet Witch’s continuity-scrubbing bubbles, or something. Maybe in the Neal Adams Roy Thomas run. I researched it at the time, but I’ve since forgotten. I needed to memorize someone’s phone number, and that’s the only brain space I had available.

Apparently Grant made a decision to go back to it, but I’m not sure whose actual idea it was: his, Marvel’s, or God’s acting through them both as a conduit—I assume his, because he was Grant Morrison, and he had the power, the power of Hoodoo—all I can tell you is that the germ of the idea wasn’t mine.

I had intended to use Polaris in my run from the beginning, keep her much as she’d been when I’d read about her in X-Factor and other places, then eventually marry her off to Alex, happily ever after—at least until some other writer came along and made them related to Satan. It was a surprise to me when she appeared in Grant’s X-Men—crazy, muttering to herself, and wandering in the radioactive mud. We’d just had coffee the previous day, and she seemed fine. Just shows how you can miss the little signs.

Once she’d appeared as Nutso Profundo I had to rewrite some of my scripts, and went with Lorna the edgier, more volatile and unpredictable Looney Tunes with a heart of gold. It made a certain amount of sense, and I agree with you, she became more interesting than she had been. CURSE YOU GRANT MORRISON AND YOUR GENIUS! He was always making me look bad for my lack of imagination. I think he did it on purpose.

If Lorna had been on Genosha when it was destroyed, that kind of devastation likley would have changed her, deeply, although I’m sure she still could have had kids, a marriage, and sold Tupperware in her spare time if only I had let her. I decided not to, because I’m a dick, that way.

So it wasn’t planned, it wasn’t actually my idea, but I ran with it and thought it was a good direction and an interesting one. And, tellingly, people both credit, and blame me for the change.

If you liked it, I did it. If not, it’s Grant’s fault.

See how easy that is?

So when I took over X-Men, I believed I had to use the team Joe Casey had used, which included the lovely and talented Stacy X.

I had no idea that I was free to bring in and get rid of people, to change their personalities, costumes, personal hair-care products, or anything of the sort—at least not initially.

So I kept Stacy, made her fall for Warren, then try to get some rebound jiggy with Kurt, left Lorna crazy, made Kurt quippy and fun (I was told initially that Joe intended to get Kurt out of the priesthood before I would take over, and had to adjust back to dark and somber when that didn’t happen for whatever reason), kept Archangel, added Paige Guthrie because the editor’s liked her personally and wanted her on the team, brought back soap and relationships because Marvel felt it was core to the series (and I agreed), added Sammy because Marvel wanted an anchor-point for new readers, and so on, and so on.

Eventually, with Stacy X, I was told to get rid of her. Now. Right away. Painfully, if at all possible, and never mention her again.

And unfortunately by then I had come to love Stacy. She turned out to be a great character. She created nothing but conflict, which is raw meat for any writer looking to give life to interesting and compelling stories. I thought Stacy was a brilliant character—one of Joe’s best ideas, actually—and would have loved to continue using her. She stirred things up. But people hated her, particularly the folks at Marvel. The ones who write those X-Checks I mentioned. They’re kinda like Disney bucks, only with claws on ‘em.

So on that panel in Chicago, or the seventh level of hell, what I wanted to say was, “No, Marvel made me get rid of her, she’ll never be coming back, and I miss her because she was a great character.”

But I wasn’t sure I could say that, then.

Now I no longer care.

You are right in that Lorna first made her reappearance in New X-men. But Austen didnt have to pick up on what she said there. It could have been just crazy jibberish that Lorna was spouting and thats what I thought at first since she emerged from the Genosha rubble absolutely crazy and not all completely there. Austen went further and made her have some behind the scenes DNA test to prove he was her father even though it was disproved years ago. It was a dumb plot twist especially since not much has been done with it since. She hasnt even had a scene with Magneto since the big reveal

in that universe apparently Lorna wished to be closer to Mag.
i actually like that they are related, but i just dont like that they havent had much contact (unlike ultimate x-men)
