I highly recommend that everyone put their politics aside and watch this interview. For the first time, you get a true behind-the-scenes of what Bush was thinking on that day.

I hate the criticism he gets for his immediate response in the classroom.

For one, consider that situation. He couldn't have been in a more difficult situation by being in a roomfull of children whose lives, he knew, had just changed forever. And there is nothing that he, personally, could have done to change the situation in anyway. So do you allow the children a few more moments of innocence, or do you rush out the room and head to a military base?

He explained why he sat there for a couple of minutes instead of immediately rushing out of the room. (He said that he didn't want to rattle the children.) He went on to say where airforce one landed that day...who he was with...what they talked about...his thought process...and how he demanded to return to DC to give the speech he gave that night over the objections of everyone. It was a very, very good interview.

So he pretty much talks about the same stuff that was in his book? I remember reading it and he talked about his thought process on 9/11

I never read his book so I can't say for sure. I just found this interview fascinating because he was so candid...and it's the first real interview he's given since leaving office.

I don't think the sitting there thing is as bad as Michael Moore and some liberals made of it. But if you look at his face, you can see the "lost in the headlights" look, but it's a natural reaction to that news.

I think anyone would have had a deer in the headlights look being given news like that. He said that he didn't want to rattle the kids and was trying to think of what to do because the press corp in the back of the room was starting to get calls and messages about the attacks.

In spite of his philosophical and policy failings, I think Bush is a good man at heart.

Well I voted for President Bush both times, and you know like any president, mistakes will be made...but I will still defend that man until my last breath...he did the best he could to defend our country and frankly, I get sick of all the hatred he gets and all of the death threats from people he gets...they just need to get over it and see the REAL train wreck we have currently in the White House...if Bush could have run a 3rd time, I would have voted for him in a heartbeat.

I applaud his handling of 9/11 and Afghanistan but other than that...meh to him!

Bush was a mediocre President placed into extraordinary circumstances.

Al Gore wouldn't have done any better, had he been in office during the 9/11 attacks.

However partisans on both sides would have you think differently.

Not to get in a partisan fight but someone who voted for Bush twice and still thinks he did a good job is calling Obama a trainwreck?

Not much else to say.

I respect his handling of 9/11, but he bungled Afghanistan. If Rumsfeld had not half-assed it and basically contracted most of the fighting out to the warlords we may have gotten bin Laden in 2002 instead of reserving troops for a useless war in Iraq. Also, if we hadn't invaded Iraq, the Bush Administration wouldn't have neglected Afghanistan for the first seven years letting it fester into a corrupt regime and for the Taliban to recoup.

I give him credit for his handling of the 9/11 aftermath and refusing to persecute Muslims. That's it. Those who say Gore wouldn't have been better...if Gore was president I doubt we'd have had two failed tax cuts and an Iraq War that ruined our international reputation and put us in a $1.3 trillion deficit. Let's not even mention torture. Oh well.

The fact we were so close to President Gore seems so strange 10+ years later.

The thing is, people bashed Bush constantly for his verbal or speaking errors. Yet Obama makes them constantly. Not to mention some of the crazy nonsense he also spouts sometimes.

People bash Obama for other nonsense. Much more malicious nonsense, like his birth certificate, his parents, where he grew up, his religion, so don't start that crap. Plus, the right loves to harp on the teleprompter thing too (despite every President since the dawn of televised speeches using them), so they still get him about his speech.

And people bash Obama on petty things like playing golf....or outright lies like being a socialist...being a Muslim....being a Kenyan....not loving America enough, etc. BTW some of those people I speak of have all been presidential contenders for the GOP nomination this year.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Democratic fans of Obama should know how it feels now .

Yay for racism, xenophobia and dangerous rhetoric.

In the crowd, not calling him Hitler?

Nixon's silent majority is often forgotten it seems.

I never liked that comparison. Fun difference? Democratic politicians in the mainstream dismissed those comparisons or conspiracy theories about Bush being behind 9/11 as the vile nonesense that it was. GOP politicians and media (like Fox News) left doors wide open for their supporters and base to think Obama was a Muslim, not born in this country, has an "anti-Colonial" Kenyan Mau-Mau worldview, etc.

There is a big difference in this case.
