Lindsay Lohan ain't no slacker -- TMZ has learned, the actress is studying up hardcore for her new movie role ... doing everything she can to accurately portray a young Elizabeth Taylor.

Lindsay is telling friends, she's taking her new gig extremely seriously -- "obsessing over getting the part right" for the film.

According to sources, Lindsay is doing nothing but watching old Liz Taylor movies to help her recreate the Hollywood icon's posture, speech, and every other little detail.

We're told Lindsay has also been watching old Liz interviews online and reading a bunch of Liz biographies.

Lifetime is taking a hard stance with Lindsay too -- demanding she complete ALL her probation requirements before filming begins ... which Lindsay has promised to do.

And tomorrow morning she'll be found stoned in a public bathroom with no memory of how she got there.

I think Lohan would be better off in a film playing Diana Dors (who was considered the British Marilyn Monroe) than Elizabeth Taylor.

Lindsay's life has been more similar to Diana's, and she looks more like her than Taylor as well.

Look at the decline of Diana Dors both in looks and health and tell me this doesn't look like where Lindsay is heading herself:

Michelle Williams played Marilyn Monroe in the movie My Week With Marilyn, which has garnered rave reviews and she's also nominated for an Oscar. She may not look like Monroe before the makeup, but in the movie the resemblance is quite uncanny, not to mention the performance as well.

I don't know. I just watched the trailer. She still looks like Michelle Williams to me, not Marilyn. Maybe I've watched too much Dawson's Creek.

It just looks much the same as Lindsay Lohan doing a Marilyn shoot. Lindsay doesn't look like Marilyn, so you just think of it as a homage.

Who in Hollywood today looks like Marilyn? Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd both played her in Norma Jean & Marilyn. Neither of them were Marilyn lookalikes, but IMO they did a really good job portraying her in different periods of her life regardless of what one think of the movie itself. I think the likeness isn't very important, the performance is always the true art. I.e Anthony Hopkins has played both Picasso and Nixon and got great appreciations for those diverse performances, not for the resemblance.

I haven't watched My Week With Marylin yet, but it seems intersting.

Saw perhaps at best a handfull episodes of that annoying chaste teen-drama, and only remember Katie Holmes and the lad playing Dawson. But I certainly know that dilemma, some actors/actresses you associate with certain TV shows are hard to see in other roles.
