Saw Rocky a few weeks ago and I gotta say it was pretty awesome. Probably one of the most unique experiences you'll have at a Broadway show. The music isn't bad at all, the cast was excellent, and the best part of the show is that it has a lot of spoken-word dialogue like the movie. It was like half-play, half-musical. If it had been fully sung like most musicals, I think it would have really hurt the show overall and would have removed much of what makes Rocky such a memorable story to begin with.

The production was top-notch. Not sure if you all have heard this, but for the final fight, the first seven rows are escorted from their seats onto the stage to sit in bleachers. The boxing rings slides off the stage and into the front-center of the theater. A jumbotron drops down from the ceiling and the theater is literally transformed into a boxing arena. I've never seen a Broadway crowd get to rowdy during a show, cheering on Rocky and booing Apollo Creed. I definitely recommend the show to anyone. The concept sounds stupid, but the execution is excellent. I was expecting something lame and walked out very pleasantly surprised.

Next up I'll definitely be going back to Phantom for Norm Lewis. Honestly, the idea of a black Phantom really doesn't do much for me, but I can't NOT see it. I've seen the show roughly 15 times with at least 5 different Phantoms in the role over time, so I'll certainly be there for this. It is a pretty monumental thing, after all.

I kinda don't like how they're marketing that.

When I first heard the casting I thought "WHOA, Awesome casting! Can't wait to see it now." The idea of Lewis being black and that being a "first" never crossed my mind... So to see them using it as a marketing tactic is weird to me. I mean, It's Norm effing Lewis!

Hasn't there been a black Phantom before though? Robert Guillame?

I mean, you can't blame them for using this news to their advantage in terms of marketing.

Phantom is a show that rarely makes headlines but has been so steady in its place over the years. They don't NEED to make headlines to be successful. People are still coming from all over the world to see the show, and it plays in dozens of territories over the world, as well. It is literally a staple of NYC and the words "Phantom of the Opera" are completely synonymos with the word "Broadway".

Having said that, with this casting, they do have a reason to make headlines and they have been using it to their advantage, as they should be. Anything to boost business of a long-running show like this is cool in my book, and we have to realize that this will certainly bring a new demographic of audience members to see a show that had for decades featured a cast that was entirely "white". Broadway today is very diverse and this casting finally brings a bit of diversity to the longest running show in Broadway history.

It's not like there's been ridiculous marketing from the show itself about it like, "Come see the first black Phantom!" "You can't miss the first black guy to lead the show!!"

Once he was cast and it was officially announced, various media outlets reported it online, as is to be expected. I think Norm Lewis participated in one or two online/print interviews about it. I also saw him interviewed from the Majestic theater on CBS or something where he talked about how excited/honored he is to be joining the rich history of the show and how he's proud to be breaking new ground on Broadway, shows that anyone with the talent (regardless of skin color) can follow their dreams, and all that crap. They showed him singing a piece of Music of the Night sans mask.

This guy also played Javert in Les Mis and Broadway back in 2006 so it's not like he's coming out of nowhere. However, the first black Phantom in the nearly 30 years the show has been running on Boradway isn't really something that should just go unnoticed or be swept under the rug...

It was part of their press release, and the media outlets ran with it (he was ABC News' "Person of the Week" a few weeks ago), but so far I haven't seen them openly advertising it as such.

I'm also a member of the Norm 'Effing Lewis Club, so that was the part of the announcement I was psyched about...I didn't realize he'd be the first black Phantom until I actually read through one of the articles later.

I've seen Norm Lewis in Tommy, Miss Saigon, Sideshow, and Les Miz. I'm so going back to Phantom for this, he's amazing.

I saw Hedwig with John Cameron Mitchell at the Jane Street Theatre back in 1998, and it was mind-blowing. I wound up seeing it 5 times - twice in one night the last two times. John had come back to the show because they were about to start shooting the movie, so we saw the 7pm show with Matt McGrath as Hedwig, and then John was back for the 11pm show. It was insane.

After experiencing that madness at the lotto on Friday, I'm just going to get tickets the regular way. I don't want to miss this.

It's a don't miss, in my opinion. Maybe I'm biased because I love Hedwig, but I've never seen it like this before. It's like they expanded it in all the best ways and it really fits the Belasco theater. NPH and Ramin are going to be fighting for that Tony.

Okay, my "big project" is completed, and I am ready to show pictures. But first some background:

- I live in a one bedroom highrise in the city, and I've been looking for an upgrade to my crappy Ikea coffee table
- I've been looking for a "nesting" style table, that can expand and contract as I need more space; but the only ones I have been able to find are the plain glass ones, which aren't really "me"
- Then, I got the idea that plain glass allows me to customize, to make it "me." Which is how I came up with the following:

I believe Ramin's name now starts with "Tony nominee".

I'm seeing Hedwig the same weekend as the Tonys. I mentioned that to my mom, and she asked who Tony was.

I just got back from NYC.

- I do not regret seeing If/Then at all, it is an intriguing and amusing trifle, but yeah, it just screamed "we need to make some bank, and Idina Menzel is free, let's build a musical around her to get some of that Frozen money."
- It was very interesting to see Pippin a second time, with different actors in the two lead roles. I won't be overly critical, as it's not really fair to compare a given actor to Ben Vereen AND Patina Miller, but it was interesting to see how Ciara Renee interprets the role of Lead Player differently. She plays the role more "villain-y" even right from the beginning; it reminded me of what would happen if Toni Braxton and Heath Ledger's Joker had a daughter who grew up.
- Cabaret lived up the hype. Michelle can sing, and can sing like you would think an English singer of that era sounded like. Her accent slipped sometimes during the spoken word portions though. Alan Cumming, the guy can entertain in his sleep.

Likewise, I've had more than one opportunity to see Idina Menzel perform live, and I never got around to it (I was third row centre, that was awesome). If I didn't see Pippin a second time it would bug the hell out of me (again, it was worth it; I was in the third row again, and Charlotte D'Amboise decided to use me as her focus during the "we're in your head" seduction segment at the end; I think I'm straight now) and Cabaret with Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming was the entire reason I organized this trip in the first place.

Sounds like a great trip. I really want to see If/Then.

I saw All The Way tonight. I have no idea how Bryan Cranston hasn't collapsed from exhaustion yet doing that role 8 times a week, but he is amazing. The show was really good...it reminded me a little of Lincoln, only with more f-bombs and far sleazier politics. I'm also a big Breaking Bad fan, so it was fun to see Heisenberg.

Also, I saw Kiefer Sutherland about a block from the theater on my way to the show. Random, but cool.
