Default Must Smallville be in Kansas?

Even though it will probably be filmed in British Columbia no matter where it is supposed to be set, I was wondering what people thought. Smallville being placed in Kansas is a relatively new norm. Its location has varied throughout Superman's history. It was for a long time in Northeast apparently (sometimes with a seaboard).

So, what do people think? Stick with Kansas? Do something different?

As long as they still have farms in Kansas, no reason to change it.

Metropolis is in New York State.

Keep it proper.

If you were born after 1987. Yes. Not that I really feel strongly one way or the other. But I wouldn't mind seeing a different direction for Smallville.

And must Smallville be in America anyway, its not like that's important...Why couldn't Superman land in Smallville in Russia or Smallville in Japan?...

It's in New York State. It's been that way since the 30s/40s.

Even in the modern postcrisis comics, like the Doomsday Saga, Metropolis was referenced as in NY. It's a twin city with NYC.

Superman Returns even used NY license plates.

Man of Steel does not acknowledge that...I think it has since been retconned

Smallville should stay in Kansas, Metropolis should be an independent City, it can even be in NYC but I doubt that in DC Universe, N Y exists.

Like Smallville, Metropolis' location has changed a lot. At least partially due to Gotham City. Obviously, two New York-inspired cities can't both exist in too close proximity. This gets especially strange when they also have a normal New York City.

If I remember correctly, Metropolis was originally implied to be Cleveland. That was changed as the character evolved, and the city became larger. Its physical location is usually implied to be in the Northeast. Usually New York but it's also been placed in Delaware.

Gotham was for a long time at least said to be in New Jersey.

Smallville's location had been unspecified for most of its history, but it obviously wasn't always Kansas, since it had a seaboard in some stories.

For some reason, I always thought Smallville and Metropolis were in the same state or quite near eachother. Don't Smallville townies always want to head out to Metropolis? That must mean Metropolis is the closest big city.

I figure just about any state will do as long as Smallville is a rural area with plenty of farms. Smallville being in Kansas isn't like some defining trait of the mythos.

That caused a few problems in Smallville (the show). Metropolis was also in Kansas, yet it looked like Vancouver. And it had an awful lot of docks for a city in a landlocked state.

Metropolis generally stands in for New York in DC universes. It's usually the biggest city in the world. But it's worth noting that New York City actually exists as well in most DC universes.

Smallville was within an hours drive of Metropolis in many Pre-Crisis comics. The Kansas location came from two sources: STM, and Superman's Return to Krypton, where Superman points to the globe and identifies Smallville as being in the center of the US. Maggin also used the Kansas location in his novels, which were written independently of the STM script and instead used the comics continuity.

Since both Jerry Siegel and Elliot Maggin used the Kansas location, that's certainly good enough for me.

That said, it has been moved around and it's not like there aren't farms in the northeast.

It may not have always Kansas, but it's been Kansas for long enough that I'm attatched to it.

What would be the reason for changing such a simple detail anyway?

Filming is done and Illinois was chosen as "Kansas."

...

In the earliest stories (apparently), Clark’s hometown didn’t even have a name – much less a specified location. But by the late 1940s, Iowa or the generic Midwest or (alternately) some state on the east coast were being mentioned. But Smallville, Kansas (as such) was a STM (1978) invention.

Kyle Rayner and the Teen Titans were in NY City.
