I'm pretty confident there won't be.

I know my thoughts on it, why do you think there won't be?

Posted why in the MCU Phase 3 thread.

of all sequels possible, IM4 is the most likely, so I doubt we won't see it

Really? You don't see a Thor 3 or Cap 3 in the cards? RDJ isn't currently contracted for a 4th Iron Man movie, but Hemsworth and Evans were both contracted for enough films to do three Avengers movies and three solo films. Those seem like more of a guarantee than IM4 to me.

I think that if they somehow tease Surtur in Thor 2, Thor 3 would be absolutely necessary. Or are you thinking that Thor 3 and Cap 3 are more likely for Phase 4?

I think it's the least likely. There will already be two new properties in phase 2 and Hulk, Thor, and Cap all have less sequels than Iron Man. It also makes sense just to avoid Iron Man fatigue and stretch out his story.

I doubt they'll pre-emptively not make movies until and unless said fatigue has actually set in. Iron Man currently is their biggest grosser (we'll see if this'll hold true this year, but I'm betting it will), so it wouldn't make sense from a business perspective to put their most lucrative franchise to rest.

So we're looking at something like this for Phase 3?

2015
Ant-Man

2016
Doctor Strange
Cap 3

2017
Hulk 2
Thor 3

2018
Avengers 3

I dunno... I could see them going a lot of different ways with that. I personally think either Thor or Cap may be bumped either in favor of another new property (Black Panther? Inhumans?) or, more likely, Iron Man 4...

Remember, as much as Marvel wants to experiment and bring fresh properties into the light, they are also very aware that Iron Man is their #1 right now. I'd expect they will want an IM4 if Iron Man 3 pulls in the most profit of the Phase 2 films other than Avengers 2...and it most likely will.

He isn't currently contracted for anything after Iron Man 3. But they're gonna give him a new contract and a lot of money, if they haven't already and just haven't announced it. He's the star of the whole MCU, they're gonna get all they can out of him.

Off topic I wouldnt mind RDJ sneaking in a 3rd and last Sherlock Holmes movie inbetween. Just to have it as a trilogy. But its wishful thinking. He's outgrown the franchise.

At the very least, I want Downey around for Avengers 2. After that, I don't mind if they recast.

They're writing a third one. I'm sure he'll be back. Pretty sure he's contracted to anyway.

RDJ has already said he loves Tony Stark and wants to remain as him. I doubt they will recast him.

No recasting. I'd rather see Tony go for good.

They said they weren't afraid of re-casting. The movies will go on beyond a Trilogy. They will treat the Movies basically like the Bond franchise. So we could probably get like 9 Iron Man movies and I'd like to see Tony Stark still be in them.

His part isn't that demanding though. Long as he can stand and talk they'll find a way.

Yeah, everyone always talks about RDJ getting older but he's only 47. I'd rather see an RDJ Tony Stark in his late 50s than a new 40 year old guy taking over within the next decade or so.

IM is MS biggest franchise that makes the most money*. they won't stop making them, that would be very foolish from a business point of view

* Avengers is obviously a bigger and different beast. just talking about the solo movies here

Hulk 2 ain't gonna happen. Replace it with Black Panther and that list looks about right.

I meant, you don't see Thor 3 or Cap 3 as more likely? Having the stars already contracted for those films makes them more likely in my mind than an IM4 that RDJ is not yet contracted for, despite his love for the character and the franchise's profitability. It makes me feel like Thor 3 and Cap 3 are more of a sure thing because something's on paper for them, and nothing's on paper yet for IM4.

The day it's announced that RDJ is signed on for 2+ more films, I'll be right there with you. Though I will still wonder if they'd rather he show up in Avengers 3 than IM4.

I personally don't see it like this. From everything the big names at Marvel have been hinting at I see them having less sequels and more new characters for Phase 3

But doesn't have to happen anytime soon, unless RDJ just decides to quit.
