The problem for me is the fact that really, this Mosque could essential be built a few blocks further away out of the shadow of the WTC.....and it could do exactly the same thing it is wanting to do.

As far as Extremists as opposed to Moderate Muslims......yes there should definitely be a difference made in the two.....BUT......IMO, the difference being made needs to be made by Moderate Muslims themselves, across the world...not just the couple that come on Fox news....I think its a couple, it might just be 1 woman....if I remember correctly.

So, if they (Moderate Muslims) want a difference made, they need to be shouting that difference from the rooftops of every mosque they are a member of........

One of the biggest and loudest deterrents to groups like Westboro Baptist Church are Christians, as well as others who come together, circle the funerals of our fallen soldiers and bow their heads and pray, or look straight into the faces of the "so called christians" who spit in their faces, call them "f** lovers" etc....that makes a statement.

And it could be built closer, what's your point?

The idea is to make the following statement : "We know the terrorists who did this do not represent the entire Muslim world".
They can still do that one block over.....it will still be within walking distance of those that are visiting the site, hell even put it on the route of the bus tours....but simply one block over. They have even been offered buildings in that area, and they refused.

But, the bottomline is going to be this.....will they be able to get contractors to do the job.....I don't think so.

I just noticed I wrote "the victims of 9/11" in my last post when I obviously meant the victims' families.
Well, I can understand Muslim groups that want that made much stronger, and feel the closer they are to the WTC in making that known makes it a stronger message.....so I think some compromise is merited. I have to say though, I don't trust the guy who is in charge of the Community Center. People keep calling it a mosque, and that isn't really what they would be building.

???? I have seen several interviews with him, what he is building is not a mosque, there is a place of prayer for Muslims, but for others as well from what he is saying....

I don't NOT believe his motives....but....Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is associated with Muslims who are major "9/11 Truthers", he is very much associated with the Malaysian-based Perdana Global Peace Organization, according to its Website. If you don't know who they are, they are the biggest donors to the "Free Gaza" organization that were the key organizers of the 6 ship Flotilla....

Now, I'm not saying that his motives are wrong, or not what he says....it is simply there are those things and others about him that give me pause....

Today marks the 20th anniversery of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. 6 people were killed and thousands injured. Sadly, the lessons of that day were not learned. RIP to those who lost their lives.

Oh, they were learned. Only the wrong people learned them. The van didn't work so they tried a couple planes.

It's okay. It should have been completed a long time ago. I think the fact it's taken almost 12 years because of red-tape, political squabbles, compromises and just straight-up greed has made me like it less than I would have otherwise. Still looking forward to it finally getting done.

I was in Lower Manhattan yesterday for an internship interview. It was actually the first time I can remember being there, I usually just go to Midtown or one of the boroughs. I got off at the PATH and didn't even realize that you get onto the street pretty close to the new building. I took a quick picture of it with my phone (even though my phone's camera sucks).

I put it in spoiler tags since it's big

As beautiful as that new tower is,everytime I see it I think of the old World Trade Center....and 9/11. I still can't get over the memory of what happened there. I doubt I ever will.

I still dislike the design and find it ugly. I do hope they can open it soon.

I thought it opens today? I thought I heard that. At least this year it will be completed. I think the whole memorial though won't be done untill 2014?

The original towers were about as ugly as it comes.

This art critic sounds like a pompous repugnant ass, but I have to agree with his assessment on the original twin towers' design:

Quote:
THE World Trade Center was an “ugly box” whose loss did no architectural damage to New York, one of the world’s most outspoken art critics has said.

“It was a large, scaleless lump, which completely dominated that end of Manhattan,” said Robert Hughes, best known in Britain for The Shock of the New, his 1980s BBC television series and book. “It only became iconic when it was knocked over by a bunch of Arabs.”

Hughes, an Australian who has lived in New York for many years, was appalled by the attacks, but he also expressed relief that Osama Bin Laden’s terrorists did not fly their planes into towers of greater aesthetic merit.

“It would have been terrible if those Al-Qaeda guys had knocked down either the Chrysler Building or the Rockefeller Center,” said Hughes last week. “These two buildings are the architectural gems of New York. Suppose a bunch of turbaned terrorists had tried to do that?”
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1703617/posts

Despite their ugliness tho they had their own kind of "beauty" and I'd take the originals over the new one any day. The skyline just isn't the same without those behemoths sticking up like two sentinels.
