Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton had $6.4 million in presidential campaign debt at the end of November, according to a report filed Saturday with the Federal Election Commission.
Hillary Clinton says she hopes to have her campaign debt paid before her possible confirmation as secretary of state.





The amount, though still significant, represents the lowest level of debt the New York senator's failed presidential campaign has reported this year. Clinton's campaign debt reached its peak, $12 million, at the end of June and has gradually fallen since then.

Clinton said she hopes to pay off her debt before her possible confirmation as secretary of state.

Clinton has also officially forgiven the $13.2 million she personally loaned her campaign. Under the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, presidential candidates who loan their campaigns money from personal funds may only be paid back if they do so by the national party convention -- in this case, the Democratic National Convention held last August in Denver.

Clinton began November with $985,000 in her campaign account and raised nearly $290,000 by the end of the month. Her campaign paid out $1.2 million, mainly to unpaid vendors, ending the month with $188,000 in the bank.

The $6.4 million in remaining debt is owed to a total of 16 creditors.
The largest unpaid amount is owed to Penn, Schoen & Berland, a political consulting and polling firm that advised Clinton during her presidential bid.

The firm's president, Mark Penn, served as chief strategist to Clinton for most of her campaign until he was forced out of his position in April after revelations that he lobbied for a U.S.-Colombia trade deal on behalf of the Colombian government despite Clinton's opposition to the measure. However, he never left the campaign entirely.

I would like to see Caroline get the position, but I'm a little more hesitant about it than I was a couple weeks ago. She needs to get her face out there a little more and start answering some of the questions that are being thrown at her by the media instead of running away from them. I'm not exactly sure what her views are politically, though luckily, her being a Kennedy makes it pretty easy to guess. She's still my number one choice and I would be absolutely ecstatic if she was New York's next Senator.

The Clintons are very well respected within the Democratic Party. I don't think she has gone through that sharp of a turn around. I think it's more a case that she's finally getting the respect she deserves from those outside the party.

We can disagree with her all day long, but the fact is...there are MANY Americans that she resonates with, and in a powerful way.

I don't really understand why my sister likes her so much, but she does...and I think because when you pull back the bad and very different interviews, the late night talk show hosts monologues, and Levi...they (my sister and others) see someone that speaks for them, we may disagree with their opinions, but they certainly have a right to have them, speak out, and follow someone that they agree with on a political as well as social level. You have a liberal to moderate at #1, and a Conservative at #2...that pretty much speaks to how our country falls on the political spectrum, AND, the fact that these two women's names have been strongly in the media throughout 2009 tells the greatest reason for the 1 and 2 as far as I'm concerned.

I don't necessarily see anything disturbing about it, not really surprised either.

For those like me that would rather have Clinton as President rather than Obama, kinda brings a little smile to my face.

The most shocking thing is how far down a First Lady is, that is unprecedented...and quite surprising.

I heard on the radio that Clinton and HW got stuck in a room with one bed. Clinton told HW to use the bed, and he slept on the floor.

Clinton Demands Unrestricted 'Net Access

Hillary Rodham Clinton blasted China and other countries that restrict Internet access to their citizens in a speech Thursday morning, citing new policy initiatives to foster freedom.
In the wide-ranging address at Washington's Newseum, Clinton said that in the last year there has been what she called a "spike in threats to the free flow of information." She announced plans to make unrestricted access to the Internet a top foreign-policy priority.
The announcement comes in the wake of accusations last week that Chinese hackers penetrated Google's computer networks.
"We look to the Chinese government to conduct a through and transparent review" following the incident, Clinton said, arguing that countries that restrict free access to information and basic Internet freedom risk walling themselves off in the next century. She said the U.S. would address differences with China on Internet freedom "candidly and consistently."
Clinton cited Tunisia and Uzbekistan for stepping up their censorship of the Internet as well. And she said that in Vietnam, access to popular social networking sites has suddenly disappeared.
State Department officials have said they intend soon to lodge a formal complaint with Chinese officials over the Google matter, which a senior Chinese government official said Thursday should not affect U.S.-China relations.

Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said in Beijing, "The Google case should not be linked with relations between the two governments and countries; otherwise, it's an over-interpretation," according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
The growing role of the Internet in foreign policy became clear last year during protests in Iran after allegations of election fraud. The government tried to crack down on protesters' Internet communications, but they circumvented digital blockades to send out video and Twitter messages about violence against demonstrators.
In one new initiative, the State Department plans to offer financial support to grass-roots movements that promote Internet freedom and advance U.S. diplomatic goals. Clinton unveiled a competition to develop the best tools, citing an application from Microsoft that could bring digital health care to remote locations.
Clinton also hopes to diminish the "honor" beatings and killings of women in the Middle East by family members who discover they are using social media on the Internet, such as Facebook or Twitter, said Alec Ross, a senior adviser.
The secretary of state cited plans to convene a high-level meeting on Internet freedom next month with those firms that provide network access, in another effort to foster freedom online.
Clinton sees Internet freedom as critical to America's longstanding promotion of democracy abroad, Mr. Ross added. She aims to shrink the proportion of the global population who live in countries that censor the Internet, he said.
"When we sit across the table from governments and talk about what matters to us, this is now on the table," Mr Ross said.
In her remarks, Clinton said it is clear that information technologies are transforming the world, yet it is unclear how that transformation will affect the human rights and welfare of much of the world's population
