Geoff Johns talks Aquaman ongoing series!

Some highlights:
- "Mera will be a staple in the series. She'll be right next to Aquaman," he said.
- "There are a lot of plans for Aqualad, not only in Aquaman, but throughout the DC Universe. He's become a pretty big character for us, which is great," Johns said.
-
Out of all the characters the writer could choose for his next ongoing series, Johns chose Aquaman because he's enjoyed writing him so much in Brightest Day, "more than anybody," he said.
"I just know that there is a lot of potential in that character," Johns said. "I know there is untapped potential in that character and everything he's about. I love that everybody knows who he is, but they don't know a lot about him. And I just had ideas and stories for him."
But the writer said that even though people saw a "Johns-written Aquaman" in Brightest Day, that isn't necessarily the type of stories they'll be seeing in his new Aquaman ongoing series.
"There are a lot of things that will happen in the book that people won't expect," he said. "Brightest Day had a pretty straightforward superhero Aquaman story. That was to get him and Mera and Aqualad and Black Manta and everybody back on stage.
"But where we go in the book will surprise some people," he said.
- "Aquaman lives in such a cool world," Johns said. "Where Green Lantern goes out away from the Earth, Aquaman goes to the depths of Earth, and there are a lot of things we've never explored. The depths of the ocean are a frontier. You see it on the Discovery Channel, that they discover a new species on the bottom on the ocean all the time, and it's a whole new world down there.
- Aquaman will touch upon the enviromental issues someway or another since he does take responsibility and so should we.

So yeah best part obvious being that we know this is going to take undersea and Johns seems to have cool ideas, probably alot of new underworld sea races and communities/kingdoms and whatnot monsters alongside sci-fi influence like battlestar galactice or stargate portal.

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/geof...an-110329.html

Quote:
Geoff Johns clarified that his run later this year on Aquaman will be an ongoing series, and it will start after Flashpoint ends.
"It's been great to see the popularity of Aquaman," Johns said, referring to the fan response to his announcement at MegaCon on Sunday that he'd be writing an Aquaman series. "It's really cool to see all these characters get some attention for once."

Johns, who also serves as the chief creative officer for DC Entertainment, said the cast of the new ongoing series will include the characters that have been supporting Aquaman in Brightest Day.
"Mera will be a staple in the series. She'll be right next to Aquaman," he said.

Johns already added to Aquaman's supporting cast by introducing a new Aqualad in Brightest Day #10, coinciding with the same new Aqualad appearing in a new Young Justice animated series. The writer said the teenaged Aqualad is here to stay and will be important to the whole DCU.
"There are a lot of plans for Aqualad, not only in Aquaman, but throughout the DC
Universe. He's become a pretty big character for us, which is great," Johns said.

After having died a few years ago in the comics universe, Aquaman was resurrected by Johns in the 2009 mini-series Blackest Night and has been starring in the bi-weekly Brightest Day, which finishes in April. Johns, who co-writes Brightest Day, hinted in a December interview with Newsarama that he would be writing the hero after the bi-weekly ended.
Having first appeared in 1941, Aquaman has gone through some drastic changes as writers have tried to make him popular enough to sustain an ongoing series. The last ongoing Aquaman series, Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis, ended in 2007 with issue #57.
Johns said he's been interested in the character for a long time, and he compared his universe to that of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, which Johns has ushered into a significant revival over the last six years.
"Aquaman lives in such a cool world," Johns said.

"And how does that relate to our world?" Johns added. "That's what I want to explore. I really want to find Aquaman's place in the DC Universe, but then also explore what he means within the rest of that world."
Newsarama recently explored Aquaman's potential and creators pointed toward the story potential of Aquaman's connection to environmental issues.
Johns agreed there's a "real issue there."
"Aquaman cares about that, and it's central to who he is," Johns said. "But you have to be careful not to be preachy."
Then he added that there's something happening in the DCU that could allow Aquaman to approach the issue. "There are some twists and turns coming up that involve some of that, but I don't want to get into it just yet," he said, then added, "I'll just say this: It's all about responsibility."

“What you’re looking at is probably my very first drawing of Aquaman. For Flashpoint, he’s military, tough and rugged with a scar on his face. You can see a lot of Sgt. Rock in his look…but that’s probably in my genes! I gave him the buzzcut to help with his background and decided to keep the trident like the original one…why mess with a good thing? The fins on his boots in this sketch didn’t make the final cut for the series. I like the take no prisoner attitude that he portrays since that’s his character. Someday, I’d love to take a crack at a hard-hitting mini-series with him. There’s so much visual that can be done with underwater techniques.”

Waid's Daredevil and Geoff's Aquaman are easily the two books I'm looking forward to the most this year. A lot of what both writers have in store for these characters has me excited and sound promising. Can't wait for this.

So is anyone ever going to address why Aquaman's favorite new trident isn't actually a trident? I see 5 points...

I'm glad Aquaman's going to have some big names attached to his upcoming series. I'm always a bit wary of Johns' comics now, but I'll pick it up for a while at the very least.

I would be happy that Johns is on this book if not for what he did with Superman and Superboy. He IMO has a habit of starting great arcs but then leaving right in the middle of them with other writers left to pick up the pieces. Well that is at least my experience with him on the Superman titles.

He was on Action Comics for a while. Like 3 or 4 arcs, right? But yeah, much as I enjoy Lemire's work on other comics, I can't say his post-Johns Superboy has blown me away. At all.

If Lemire actually goes with the incest route in Superboy, I'm dropping it.

Eh, Conner and Lori are only cousins. They're in Kansas, that's barely even considered incest.

Yea but as he kept on saying the whole Last Son, New Krypton, arc was suppose to lead into something bigger in the DCU that would be something like the Sinestro Corp War and he left the title before that could be achieved. Then his replacement left right before Superman: World of New Krypton so they had to scramble to get that ready. Then with Superboy he was suppose to have big stuff planed for that book where his friend Simon was suppose to be like the next Lex Luthor but that got lost as well as well as Cassie was suppose to play a bigger part in that book.

Be thankful Smallville isn't in West Virginia or they would already have a couple of kids by now. On a serious note if they do go down that road from there on out all I would see Conner as is that guy from the Simpsons who is married to his cousin.

Color me interested, but I'm more interested in that Aquaman trade, along with the other Bronze Age trades hitting stores this summer.

It's still a trident. It's the same trident he has always had from the Alex Ross design toys and even the same as the one in Brightest Day. The only time in comics the trident has ever looked different was in the PAD days--odd how the artist that introduces it doesn't get credit for the design they use but Alex Ross does--and in that JLA: Classified story it looked different.

The difference here is that those side prongs look longer the way Kubert drew it.

I know it's the trident Ross gave him. But that trident's never really been a trident. I never got why Ross gave it 5 points either. It's just kind of weird.

"Water hand" sounds cooler than either. It's a hand... made of water.
