Isnt it a bit hypocritical to make a manip based on someone elses work and then get all upset when people manip your work?

in my opinion, if it is an original work, then you should always ask permission. some of us are amazing artists, and some of us are great manip-ers. but manips can be considered "art" as well. while it is not like an original art piece, creating manips are hard-work as well, with the coloring/lighting, creating background, and so on. so i think it is acceptable for someone not to want others to use them manips, but unacceptable to say that they rip-off the manip because they used the same base for their work. the original image is fair to use for all, so it is not correct to claim the image, even if they discovered it and are the first ones to use it.

in this case tho, they both used a stock image. so it is incorrect for one to take claim on a image that doesn't belong to them in the first place. since it is public domain, and you are not making a profit of it, you can use it (although yes in an ideal world, you should get the permission of WB or DC, or whoever, but come on now), but since it is meant for public, it is fair game for all to use as long as you aren't making money from it. However, when an artist posts something here, the response/critique/appreciation is the "profit". so if you using a image without permission, and you are getting a response/critique/appreciation, then you are stealing if the original artist did not allow it.

while i agree that you shouldn't really tell someone not to use your manip for further "manip-ing" (unlike original pieces that are completely the right of the artist) i think it is ok for someone to ask others not to manip their manips, using the same photo/art as a base doesn't count.

my opinion

absolutely love this. it also looks like the blue is a 2nd layer overtop the red ... sort of like armor. like the red underneath is a bodysuit, and then the torso and legs are something overtop. really neat way to keep the trunks without them being trunks.

Well..as many already know - Elvis and Superman are one and the same anyway...so I guess they got the casting SPOT ON.

"That" is a dodgy pic with unnatural looking hair.
Go look at the 1000's of pics posted in other threads, watch some footage of him, then tell us he looks as bad.

You seem somewhat familiar... Hmm. So, umm, just for the sake of argument (Because that's obviously what you came in her for) who was your guy?

Apologies djingo & Zero for posting a manip that you feel looks like a "CHEAP Elvis imitator in Vegas" and "is a dodgy pic", I'll take it down immedietley, wouldn't want to offend your sensibilities.

No i'm sorry.
I've made my point wrong, the manip was good, way better than lots of others.
I mean, look at that guy is THAT Superman? The face don't talk "superman" to me at all.
I can't help it but i have a very, very very bad feeling about this movie.
1 the director who haven't delivered anything good yet and 2 the actor, sorry he can be a good actor but i have serious doubts if he can present a superman.
Routh and Reeve where a man with a "superman presentation" but this Cavill guy just doesn't talk "superman" to me.

And it is not only in this pic, it's in all the pics and the video i've seen. Sorry but that is no superman to me.

Fantastic picture strib, love the costume design in particular how you've designed the trunks/belt, top job.
The only thing that very slightly jars (& I think it's been mentioned here) is the way the legs look like armour, sure it was a design choice and totally your perogative as the artist, but for me I'd question why Superman would need such armour. Your design would look equally as well less armoured. Great work regardless of my thoughts

my opinion

It's actually a very tricky area especially online. It comes down to much of this would have to be argued in a courtroom, which simply would not be worth it. The picture itself is NOT considered public domain. The photo of the product would in fact be the property of the photographer. They own the copyright of the photo. While WB owns Superman they would not own the photo. However if the photo is "published" without consent of both the photographer and the company, you could face problems. If you wanted to, you could probably make an argument that this board is a form of publishing. But then you could also make the same argument for half of the internet. So it could be argued that everything here on the boards including the manips are in violation of copyright law. But like you said it's really about being realistic. No one is profiting from this stuff. It's all in good fun. Now if folks started selling their manips in like a collected book form? Yeah then you have a problem. I think everyone can see how complicated this can get legally.

Here endeth the lesson.

Hey dude, didnt mean it like that! lol
I meant the Cavill pic was a dodgy one, as in if I had to pick a photo of Henry to manip I wouldnt have picked it.
Your photoshop is really decent man.

Nice.

Though I, too, am confused by the way the blue overlaps the red, particularly the trunk area where it looks like someone took a chunk out of either side of his torso. Is there an original post with your thoughts on that, Strib?

Oh, and lastly... Michael Shannon?
