Damn...CBS' Bob Schieffer is hammering both parties for this mess. He flat out called them out for putting politics above country. You know it's gotten ridiculous when Bob calls you out!

A shutdown is no big deal. Belgium had their government shutdown for a year.

Perhaps Obama can save some money (prevent shutdown) by diverting his current bailout for Qaddafi - aka the dude you are trying to kill - into the difference. It is in the billions. Just sayin'

Sadly, it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that politicians would put politics before country.

There really is no point in these CR's anymore. The two parties will just yell at each other and procrastinate like a teenager on a school project, for another week.

You're the one being naive. Especially since you have Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Howard Dean rooting for a shutdown so they can blame Republicans.

If a shutdown does occur, the blame goes to both parties who put politics over compromise. Blaming just President Obama, or Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats, or John Boehner and the House Republicans is absurd and a partisan hack.

John Stewart said it best, when the Republicans wanted $60 billion in cuts and Democrats refused to go over $30 billion, instead of meeting in the middle, they would rather have a shutdown.

I'm just curious why Canadians care what's happening in America when they have troubles of their own ?

The same reason they watch the NFL instead of the CFL.

You're our Number one trading partner
You're our closest ally
You're our best friend

Our countries are so close, not just geographically, but historically, politically, financially. Whatever happens in the states effects us as well.

Well some of the Canadians I know will probably celebrate if the US government shuts down. Also I've heard Canada has been anti-American lately. In fact Canadian politicians aren't liked if they sound too American friendly.

I wouldn't be surprised if both parties did all this crap just to make it seem like they were sticking to their guns when they weren't going to shut down the government anyways.

Political posturing is what this was and it's disgusting from both sides.

And that is how Uncle Ben dies.

I thought they had agreed to a one week extension of the budget until a 'proper' deal could be reached?

They have a proper deal, they just need to hammer the deal out in legislative language or something.

"Boehner, for example, still wants to get the net cut—now expected to be near $38 billion to $39 billion- as close as possible to $40 billion But in truth, the $1.050 trillion target already accepted by Democrats will require an estimated $42 billion-plus cut from non-defense spending to make room for the increased allowed for defense above 2010 spending."

Oh, so like our own teachers and stuff? Ah, I get it.
