I think the best thing about the David Goyer story is that in only a few pages has rid Superman of that singular debilitating epithet, that the Man of Steel has had to bear and carry for the last quarter century.
After Action #900, no one can call Superman, "the Big Blue Boyscout" anymore, not even Batman.
Although I am not aware of exactly where Superman was first referred to as "the Big Blue Boyscout" by another character in the pages of a comic book, the culprit for wrecking the Man of Steel's reputation and IMO putting the final bullet in the Silver Age Superman, was Frank Miller and his distorted mischaracterization of Superman in The Dark Knight Returns.
In the DKR, Superman is portrayed as a mindless puppet, possessing no independent will, who simply does what he told by his handlers (the U.S. Government).
This negative characterization of the Man of Steel, who was never portrayed that way prior to The Dark Knight Returns (although some point out Christopher Reeve's take of the character and Otis calling him an "overgrown boyscout" in a scene in STM, as where it started) has haunted Superman ever since.
The era of the emasculated Superman has come to an end.
If David Goyer was able to accomplish this in a few pages of Action Comics, imagine what he could do in an entire script.
I welcome a return to a manly Man of Steel possessing independent will and spirit, and am sure that Henry Cavill will be a Superman in the tradition of Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, and the young James Garner look-a-like, Curt Swan Superman.

IMO the best thing about this movie is still the release date. At least the world will end with a smile

Just saw a video of celebrities choosing their favorite superhero. Michael Sheen said Superman and is apparently reading All-star Superman. Could he be prepping...?

Probably not, but he would be a cool addition to the cast although I dont know who he'd play.

I usually read the boxofficemojo forum and no one bets on the success of the movie. They expect only 200-205m in the US. IMO they are basing too much their predictions on SR's performance.

Lol. they have lost their minds guessing this early..we know NOTHING save for some of the cast and who ONE or TWO of the villains will be.
We have no idea what the suit will look like, who the rest of the cast will be, what kinda action it will have, the score, etc etc.

They may very well be right, but i'd at least wait for the trailer before guessing.
Anywho, I'll play. My guess, somewhere between 230 and 350 mill dom lol.

So I was thinking about how we are sort of in the era of cynical deconstruction of icons, and I think that MAN OF STEEL needs to be a reconstruction of Superman for this modern cultural climate, like BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT have done with Batman. Accepting the criticisms of deconstructions of superhero stories, and addressing them is, in my opinion, the way to go. Thoughts?

And yet SR made as much money as Batman Begins.

To be fair, the difference was BB's good wom and great DvD sales...That made all the difference in a sequel happening for it Vs a reboot for Superman.

Yes, that's the reason why BB got a sequel and SR didn't. BB was ultimately the better movie.

But it shows that Batman isn't automatically a larger draw than Superman.

Not when you count the budgert difference and dvd sales.

Look at the the top 20 superhero films for box office . There are 5 Batman films and one Superman film .

Batman is more popular than Superman . That is pretty much a fact at this point . So is Spiderman

The audience doesn't go see a movie based on how much money it cost to make. During BB's initial cinema release, it generated the same amount of box office as SR did. Yes, the DVD sales were much better and earned it a sequel, because people found out it was actually a good movie, and SR was expected to do much better given how much money they spent on it, but those are the facts from the perspective of the audience.

Batman has a much better box office history than Superman, but Batman has had a much higher number of good films, whereas Superman really only has Superman: The Movie.

Doesn't Batman comics generally out sell Duperman comics as well ?

Yes, but again, Batman comics are generally better written. Superman hasn't had any consistently solid writing for at least 15 years.

overall through the history of the characters, superman is far better known and iconic. modern times, batman has been the better seller in comics/films/etc. these things always tend to fluctuate though and theres really no point to comparing them.

You are right, infact if the movie is good, I'm sure that it will be a success, at least on DVD. There isn't anything incomprehensible in SR's cold numbers, and you know that I defended it with fanatical ferocity
