Default American Critics on Thor

Thor opens in Australia and gets mostly great reviews. Maintains a 95 on RT, and around an 8 out of 10 on IMDb.

Premiers here in the USA and the 95 plummets to 90, and the 8.0 goes down to 7.6.

What's the deal with the American critics? Do they think they understand and perceive movies more accurately than anyone else, or are they just more on the "sassy" side? Harder to please?

And when I say sassy, that covers a broad spectrum of the word.

7.6? I checked & it was at an 88%.

There's a crapload of troll reviewers, who review movies the opposite of what everyone else says. They're just trying to get attention.

The 88% is RT, which was at 90% two hours ago.

The 7.6 is IMDb which was at 8.0 out of 10 several days ago.

I stopped paying attention to "critics" a long time ago. They can often ruin the enjoyment and magic of the movies, for me.

I'd much rather hear by word of mouth whether something sucks, or is fantastic, and then decide for myself.

I agree. But what I was eluding to, is why American critics seem to be much more critical and negative with a film, whereas foreign critics aren't. Especially a Marvel film.

American critics seem to be more sensitive and opinionated, or as mentioned... "sassy." lol

IMO

First off one of those "American" negative reviews is from the Sydney Morning Herald. Second of all, there are only 81 reviews. Thor is likely to end up with over 250 reviews, so it can easily climb back over 90%.

Maybe they're not trying to feel superior but they didn't think the movie was that good.

One case or the other, nobody should lose sleep over what they think.

O' noes. peoples don leik my movie.

I always take "professional" reviews with a grain of salt. Usually if, and only if, I'm on the fence and can go one way or the other. I'm not on the fence with Thor. I'm excited to see it, and pre-release reviews aren't changing that.

There are going to be a lot of movie snobs who dislike Thor... especially knowing it's based on a comic book. There are some critics you can never please... and the film is automatically up against a hurdle with people like that. It's a piece of entertainment, and in that aspect the film certain succeeds and... makes me want to see "Thor Returns."

If I listened to critics, I would have missed so many movies I love...a good chunk of them comic book/super hero films...

Or fall lower.... lol, but yeah I thought it was unrealistic to expect it to stay so high. TDK, IM and Spiderman 2 are the only superhero movies above 90%, some critics just don't like superhero movies. That said, its happened three times, no one is saying it can't happen a fourth with Thor. I also think its more of the fact that we are getting more reviews so there is a higher chance of more negative reviews than it is about American reviewers not liking it. IF it is that, I'm sure they'll make up for it with Captain America

Amen! For me, checking RT is a mild diversion at best. There are loads of times that I've been completely in disagreement with the consensus.

It's a good movie guys... (for those who havent seen)... some of us "fans" will always be persnickety about things, including myself. But overall I was pleased with it and look forward to them making another one and/or his Avengers appearance.

If at the end of the day this has proved Thor a viable hollywood filmmaking commodity then all other concerns for me are fairly minor. First thing you absolutely MUST do is get your foot in the door. I certainly don't expect this to be the best Thor film ever made. But it likely will always be the most important one.

Yea, this is an introduction to the character. I expect the sequel, which is pretty much inevitable at this point, unless this bombs in a massive way in the US, will delve more into the mythos of Thor. Maybe a movie not set on Earth at all.

Agreed

I'ma huge Thor fan but I'm gonna try not to harp on minor greivances with the film because it looks like it's serving it's main purpose.

The main purpose being Thor receiving major exposure with an overall good film that opens the door to future films of an even higher caliber.

Speaking of American critics, did any of you read this?
http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2011...ttend_the.html
Roger Ebert is probably one of the best know critics and boy does he ever lay the smackdown on this movie, what a sour old man.

Quote:
Here is a film that is scoring 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. For what? The standards for comic book superhero movies have been established by "Superman," "The Dark Knight," "Spider-Man 2" and "Iron Man." In that company "Thor" is pitiful. Consider even the comparable villains (Lex Luthor, the Joker, Doc Ock and Obadiah Stane). Memories of all four come instantly to mind. Will you be thinking of Loki six minutes after this movie is over?
The director given this project, Kenneth Branagh, once obtained funding for a magnificent 70mm version of "Hamlet." Now he makes "Thor." I wonder with a dread fear if someone in Hollywood, stuck with a movie about a Norse god, said "Get Branagh. He deals with that Shakespeare ****."

Ya we discussed it in the reviews thread. Not one of Ebert's finer moments that's for sure.

I was listening to the radio the other day going to work and the DJ's were saying how Fast Five made so much money because it brought in more of an ethnic audience like latinos, blacks, asians that are just as important to the box office.

Whereas a movie like Thor in which the protagonist is a blond nordic blue eyed won't really bring in that much of the large minority.

Being that the case I wonder how Thor will do in places like Mexico, Venezuela, etc., it's common knowledge that action movies do better abroad.
