That artwork is just so good. I still love the way he drew DD's perspective of the Spot!

In fairness it was the dark nature of the character that made him famous. It started with Miller in the 80's and continued with Ann Nocenti and the rest. Nocenti did a solid job balancing out the dark and the swashbuckling at times which is why I hold that run in high regard. Karl Kesel did a critically praised run with Cary Nord in the mid 90's before the MK relaunch that was very light and noir-ish in tone.

ooh, I didn't know that Kesel wrote some DD. I like Kesel. I'm gonna have to track that down.

But it was over kill.....over DONE! Went waaay too long! No one said there were no great stories from those dark days.... But he's back where he belongs! Just as Batman is better in the Dark because those were his roots... DD is better in the light being Doug Fairbanks, in the day light! Those were his roots! ![]() |

I wouldn't say that Daredevil is better in the light because of his roots. It's exactly like what kguillou said, Daredevil got so dark and depressing that this lighter take is a breath of fresh air. Just like how Morrison's take on Batman or the Brave and the Bold take on Batman were breaths of fresh air after dark, grim, and gritty became excessively done with the Batman mythos.
Do I prefer a grim and gritty Daredevil? Yeah, I got hooked on Daredevil with Miller, Smith, Bendis, and Brubaker. But I'm tired of the grim and gritty right now. |

Plus, Mark Waid is good on pretty much anything he writes.

They really should. After the FF run he had, you'd think Marvel would give him more shots with team books.

I love the first two issues like tumblr loves lady gaga gifs. Waid writing with Rivera/Marcos rotating? Oh god.
Hope they have a nice, lengthy run. |

The second issue definitely keeping up the pace. Really loving Paolo Rivera's work on this. Loved the little skirmish between Cap and DD.

Is it wrong that I was more excited about Waid writing Cap again than anything else about this issue?

Waid needs to write Avengers - that's all there is to it.

I would die.
Then I would rise as a zombie and take breaks from my brain-eating endeavors to read Waid's Avengers.

Hasn't Waid written a few minis for Avengers? I thought he had, but thinking back, I might be thinking of Busiek and his huge Avengers run. I always get those two writers confused in their awesomeness.

It's definately been a good read but I miss the darker feel. The only Daredevil I've read was Smith's first arc and then from Bendis on, so that's all I know. Him in a lighthearted role just feels wrong for me.
And I liked how dark and depressing the book got, and I wish it could have kept going. |

I read a few '80s Daredevil comics when I was younger. One in particular that I remember featured Daredevil fighting cockroaches. So I feel like I'm pretty well prepared for the lighthearted DD Waid's presenting.

The only thing I remember Waid doing on the Avengers was the last few issues of vol 1 before Heroes Reborn. He did do one of my favorite Avengers issues ever #400 with Loki attacking the team while in disguise as a time traveling historian.
The dark aspect of DD went on for over a decade. It was time for a break from it and remind the fans he can be a fun character instead of all the doom and gloom. |

Although I will say one thing, I dont think Andy Diggle took full advantage of the whole "DD leader of the Hand" angle. There was some great potential there for some very interesting stories....instead we got Shadowland. ![]() Last edited by kguillou; 08-22-2011 at 09:25 PM. |

The Hand story could have been a great balance to bring him up out of the grit while maintaining the darker edge. I think the Shadowland arc could have been good and a wonderful conclusion but the Hand angle didn't have time to grow.

What's baffling is those 6 or 7 issues Diggle wrote prior to Shadowland were FANTASTIC stuff. Taking Matt to Japan and having him learning to control the Hand, it was really good stuff and then Shadowland was just a mess. It makes me wonder if Shadowland was even his idea or if Marvel forced him to do it.

You remember the issue? This sounds incredible. Goddamn cockroaches vs. Daredevil - that should be the plot of the reboot right there. My money...ah, you know the rest.
