Will this movie be shot with 3D tech or will it be converted in 3D in post production? In either cases, where was it confirmed? Please give links and references. Thanks.

According to IMDB (it's not a sure thing but it'll probably pan out), they're using the Arri Alexa digital camera to shoot in dual-strip 3D.
And they have a stereographer from Avatar and the other post-converted Marvel films like Thor and Captain America. |

I sure hope this movie will be available in 2D.

I'm sick of this 3D business. Converted 3D looks terrible and like garbage. It hurts and ruins the movie and the movie's experience. Stop this conversion nonsense. Fake IMAX is one thing, but stop trying to pass off non-3D movies as 3D movies.

It seems like no one here can confirm what's really going on with the 3D tech aspects of the film. Can Marvel answer a simple question: post-conversion or not?
I agree with most people that 3D post-conversion is not real 3D and it's not what the public wants. I'd rather they go 3D all the way with real 3D tech than doing a post-conversion. I'd see it in 2D if it's post-conversion. |

The post conversion on Thor was a disappointment. Most of the movie was in 2D anyway. You didn't even need to wear your glasses to see most of the movie clearly, and aside from a few shots during the Frost Giants battle at the beginning there was not much to see in 3D anyway. The only reason I saw it in 3D was because the 2D screening was sold out, and me and my family didn't want to wait around for 3 hours waiting for another 2D showing or drive around looking for another theater that had it. I will NOT be watching Captain America or Green Lantern in 3D since they are also post-production converted, and I'll be smart and reserve my tickets online unlike last time.
If Avengers is being shot in 3D then I will probably watch it in 3D. Post production conversions are a one-way ticket back to the obsolescence heap for 3D if the studios keep it up. Bad 3D movies killed the format in the 80s, and it will happen again if the studios don't get their act together and stop with the frivolous post-production conversions. I had a similar experience with Thor, drove around all over the place trying to find somewhere to watch it in 2D. Ended up having to go to a 3D showing or miss it entirely. The 3D was unimpressive at best, but I did enjoy the film a lot. Just a bit narked that I had to pay extra for the tickets. |

I agree with you guys. I'll see the 3D version if it is SHOT in 3D. I saw Thor in both for the heck of it and the 3D was disgusting.
RealIrOnMaN, nice sig by the way

After KFP2 disappointed, I read an article that there was some backlash among the investors on Wall Street towards the whole 3-D thing. If more 3-D keeps disappointing then the tide may turn on it. Hopefully it happens in time for The Avengers to not even have to bother with it. The movie schedule is tight for this film already. Why waste time with 3-D? Use those resources to nail down the SFX better, I say. By the time this is done filming they'll have what? 9-10 months for post. Pretty quick for even a standard superhero summer film. Considering the size of this film and what it needs to be, that makes it even tighter.

The 3D effect was subtle in places, but nowhere near what you claim. If you had left your glasses off and paid attention to peripheral content as well as the point of focus, then you would have noticed that the 3D effect was present throughout.

Well during stuff like the bar scenes or areas where the background is crowded and the focus truely in on the foreground the image was 2d and you could clearly see it without glasses. But of course go back to Asgard or outside and that changes. I have yet to see a 3d movie not be available in 2d. But I have heard of some theaters not offering a 2d option and many theaters booking more times for the 3D version. 3d will only work and it really serves a purpose and the movie isn't dark. So far the illusion of a deeper space isn't enough when the picture becomes muddy and very difficult to see. IF YOU CAN SEE THE PICTURE THEN THERE IS A PROBLEM.
Conversion or 3d Camera I don't think it will solve that overall problem too much.

I don't pay for 3D anyway. I pay for 2d showing and then sneak in the 3D one. Best of both worlds.

Do you carry your own 3D glasses?

A good technique I recently used at a theater showing fake IMAX is that since the fake IMAX 3D glasses disposal units don't have lids and are located in a mini lobby area, me and my girlfriend got out of one movie we paid for and just walked into the lobby area and picked two pairs of glasses out of the bin for a 3D movie starting immediately after!
Funny part was, the regular 3D movies had bins with lids right outside their respective screening rooms with people monitoring them. Who'da thunk the IMAX 3D of all the 3D showings in a movie theater would be the easiest one to sneak into? |

My buddy is the manager at the local theater and our theater's projectors only react to certain glasses so they have to get special glasses which cost $25 a pair, so needless to say, they monitor the hell out of them.

With the official first teaser upon us, I took it upon myself to check whether The Avengers was shot in 3D.
Nope. Seamus McGarvey and Joss Whedon shot it with the Arri Alexa digital camera, but in 2D. Looks like another 3D hackjob conversion. |

I will also plan on seeing it a second time in 2D. But the screening I go to will most likely be 3D

Starkk, whenever I go to a Paramount, WB, or Disney screening for a 3D movie it will always be the 3D version. The advance screenings I saw for Green Lantern, Thor, Cap, and Clash of the Titans were all the 3D version.

Oh, I didn't know you were able to go to an early screening. Lucky you.
