Default Superman effects

Ok, so after watching the Smallville series finale again I just hope that none of the effects in the new movie look as horrid as they do on the show. I don't want any blurs or building up to takeoff. Watching Clark crouch in that stupid pose makes me cringe. I hope the movie looks 10x better...what are everyone else's thoughts?

imo...it's just common sense that a multimillion dollar movie being produced by the director for the recent Batman films will have much better effects than a teen drama tv series of pre-Superman Clark Kent.

I certainly hope so but you never know how they might decide to portray that this character is moving faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound...

Do you mean that matrix take off with those sonic wave things? I hope Snyder doesnt think that would be a nice touch for Superman when flies.

I actually wouldnt mind a scene of Clark on the ground and pushing off from a crouching stance and leaving a slight crater from the force.

I hate the sonic wave/blur effect that was used for when he took off and when he flew up to Apokolips. It looked terrible. And I'm not sold on the crouched take off either...

Considering all the effects in Snyder's past films, I don't think we have to worry about how it will look effect wise.

Honestly, with how much recent comic movies have been kind of visually boring, I'd prefer overdone effects over lazy, minuscule ones.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about effects and stuff like that.

Pretty much every superhero movie that comes out these days get a load of money thrown at them. Because studios know they're normally the big earners. Especially the big ones like Superman, Spider-Man and Batman.

And to defend Smallville... they are on a VERY limited budget of around 1.5 million an episode. This movie is bound to be about $200 million.

So yes, I think it's safe to say it'll have better effects than on Smallville.

I didnt care for the power take off either..
He should be able to instantly take off at terrific speeds from the ground as easily as we can walk across a room.

For my money...I am very fond of the "three steps, and bound" made famous by "The Adventures of Superman" 50s series, along with the "whoosh" and wind disturbance. It gives a "physical" sense of power to Superman's flight, which is what the "shock-wave" FX of Smallville is meant to do also.

Superman effortlessly and silently rising into the air just doesn't have that dramatic impact.

Exactly. There's no point in him crouching in order to push off into the sky. He would just fly off. He isnt leaping anymore. But it doesnt look very powerful on the screen, so unless they can do somehing new, he probably has to do a Neo.

Edit: afan beat me to my point.

I think if we are going with a more mature kent then he needs to look confident with his powers. I have always enjoyed the floating sit that he does, gives him a more relaxed feel.

If they could some how do a seamless "one take" of him going from standing to super speed without it looking like cgi then well...yeh..cool

Superman can have powerful takeoffs without the air ripples and crouching. Just look at the takeoff from Lex's lair and after Lois's death in STM.

I also hope for something completely new FX-wise. Both regarding the action, the flying and the FX in generel. Something that's hasnt been possible in the past.
I just really wanna see some flexible and believable flying/floating. I thought the way Titan in Megamind floated/flew around people would be a nice touch, but probably impossible to do live action. A young Clark floating around Jonathan while talking teen-stuff or shooting hoops would be awesome to watch.

Would be cool to see Clark practicing using his powers while growing up. Would also very much like to see Superman flying/floating standing up. That always looks eerie.

I'd love to see his heat vision at full power...something kinda like what we saw with cyclops in the X-men films, only more.

Cyclops doesn't have heat vision. Though the X-men Origins : Wolverine crew didn't bother to know that.

I know this..I meant I want the effect to look similar, or even better.

Re. heat vision....Supes eyebrows "angrily" tense in proportion to the heat being used.....the intensity of the glow in his eyes grows rapidly, before fairly thin red beams are emitted, acompanied by awesome sound FX to simulate the burning air(whatever that sounds like?). Perhaps when being used at maximum power, a very subtle recoil by Supe's head as they fire. They always converge at Superman's target, just as our eyes focus at one point.

Something that it seems has become lost in the CGI/3D world of filmmaking is, sound FX. I can't think of a film recently that has featured a signature sound. Examples of a signature sound would be Tarzan's yell, Darth Vader's breathing, the sound of a light sabre, etc. You hear it, and instantly recognize the source. A lot of time and expertise for Star Wars and Tarzan's yell went into inventing sounds for devices and actions that don't exist. It would seem that the sounds of Superman would also fall into this category. A recognizable sound for Superman in flight would be nice. These types of FX are IMO of particular importance to a franchise film of which I hope Man of Steel will become.

I think a signature sound effect for Superman flying will not be a good thing, as it has no basis in reality(!). It's not like he has a jet engine or nuclear particle accelerator strapped under his cape to power flight. If he is flying fast all we need is some kind of whoosh sound as he goes past, that conveys speed. A sonic boom if he hits and passes the sound barrier is a good idea though.

We don't need a Matrix style crouch before take off or air ripples.

A run which goes into a take off would be awesome though, I think that Christopher Reeve did that in SM:II?

I think as long as flying rigs are used as much as is practically possible, we won't have to be too concerned about the flight aspects of the movie.

I'm probably in the minority here but I miss the heat vision we got in the Reeve movies; the way it looked, the way it sounded - just so, so cool.

I've been dissappointed with the depiction of heat vison in Smallvile and SR to be honest. I mean, I totally understand that there's been a concerted effort to make it look more like 'heat' vision as opposed to 'laser' vision but it just doesnt have that 'oomph' factor for me.

I think of heat vision and I instantly recall Reeve blowing that wall apart [that had been thrown at him] in Superman II.

Now that had oomph!

I think the laser is justified if you consider Superman's powers come from solar energy. The visible light is more or less a side effect of the solar energy he's blasting out of his eyes. And I figure the intensity could be shown through the colors of his heat vision, with yellow being hotter than red.
