It would be one thing if they were new concepts, but neither of them are new (in fact they are ancient - the idea of space aliens arguably goes back to cave drawings). I don't think there is a challenge at all to comprehend that.

As I said earlier in this thread, Thanagar connection can be shown in an after credits sequence. Strange lights in the sky foreboding something extra-terrestial, maybe? or something else.
Then it will not be such a change of theme in the sequel.

Guess some A-lister needs to play the leading role. Brad Pitt would have worked back in 2004, just the way he looked in Troy.

Michael Shanks should be allowed to be Hawkman again. I think there's no need for Brad Pitt, because the budget allotment for Hawkman would be less than the A-listers movie. Put the excess money on CGI and we will have an excellently produced film.

^ Good director too can be found with the money from not picking an expensive actor.

But a big name will draw people to see it. Hawkman isn't an audience magnet.
I can agree on Gerard Butler. He will work fine. But no to Shanks, he felt wrong for this.
And please, no director who has done just one successful comedy or dito drama. Hire an experienced blockbuster director for heaven's sake, someone who can handle both action, sci fi, adventure, fantasy, dramatic scenes and comedic moments. In other words, not Michael "let's-put-in-a-car-chase-and-then-blow-up-half-the-city" Bay.

Maybe Gyllenhaal! Or why not Anthony Michael Hall? Too old?

Soderberg is a good director, yes. I wonder if he can do superhero stuff.
Someone I would like to see getting into this genre is Ron Howard.

It would be interesting with a director from the 70/80 (who was big back then). Brian DePalma, George Miller, John Landis, Walter Hill, Ivan Reitman, John Boorman, Peter Hyams, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, Robert Zemeckis... very few of them will actually work, in reality.

I think they should focus on the Egyptian aspect of the character, but mention alien involvement right away. It won't be too much for the audience to handle, because the idea of alien visitors influencing ancient human civilizations is not a new one. It's been used in lots of movies like Star Gate and Indiana Jones.

Wow those details sound great if true...Wishful thinking would be to get both Hawkman and Flash films in the same year. I also think Hawkman is set for a huge push in the comics. He already had a big part in Brightest Day, replaced Zatanna on The Search for Swamp Thing cover and is rumored to be getting a new ongoing.

Somebody suggested Joe Manganiello for Hawkman. I think he is too tall, but he dose have the physique.

I say do a stand alone sci-fi movie using the 1989 Hawkworld miniseries as the template.

The action and characters are amazing. It has all of the action and more grit than most expect out of a Hawkman story. Beyond that there are some very relevant topics and some social commentary that have the potential to reestablish the bar for comic book movies on a whole.

Solid choice. He has a gruff voice as well.

The beak nose argument that many posters threw around during the casting of MOS definitely won't fly in this instance.

I really hope he at least gives an audition. I think Joe M. could do the role justice.

Warner Bros. Searching For 'Hawkman' Writers, Logline Finds Its Way Online

DC has always favored Batman and Superman when it comes to live-action films. They're the two big names, the money makers that the average movie-goer is familiar with. With more recent films such as 'Watchmen' and 'Jonah Hex,' as well as the upcoming 'Green Lantern,' it's apparent that DC has a newfound initiative for their lesser-known characters.

One of the next up in the line of obscure characters getting a theatrical film sounds to be Hawkman. Warner Bros. is said to be in the process of finding and locking in screenwriters for the project. Also, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, the logline that Warner Bros. has out on pay-site, It's On The Grid has made its way online. It reads:

"Part INDIANA JONES/DA VINCI CODE, part GHOST tentpole about the fictional superhero that appears in D.C. Comic books. He used archaic weaponry and large, artificial wings attached to a harness made of the Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of Hawkman work closely with a partner/romantic interest named Hawkgirl or Hawkwoman in his fight against supervillains. Based on the DC comic."

Over the years, the mantle of Hawkman has been held by more aliens than men. Bleeding Cool adds that they've heard that Warner Bros. isn't interested in going down the alien route with the superhero, so that narrows it down to the original Hawkman of the comics, Carter Hall for the film.

As unfamiliar as many may be with the character, Hawkman is older than most superheroes, having made his debut in 1940 in 'Flash Comics #1.' He has been in several iterations of the Justice League in the comics, and has made appearances on the television show, 'Smallville,' in which he was played by Michael Shanks. Hawkman's powers include flight and enhanced strength, and they derive from something called Nth metal in the comics.

Rob Lowe could perhaps be interesting but I fear he will be considered too old

After some thinking, I think John Carpenter may be the man for this. Directing-wise, that is. I have seen some of his work, and I like it. He's not only the "horror guy", he's done action too.
Do you think Warner bros will have trust in him, supporting the project with money for special effects and a handful of great actors while he focus on the script and the visual style (and perhaps adds a couple of "Carpenter darlings")?
It's been some years since he was a heavy-hitter, after all. And Hawkman has to make a lot of money.
I can only say that 20-25 years ago, Kurt Russell would have played the role. For sure!

If Hawkman comes out 2013 together with Flash, I wonder which one of them who gets the biggest success. Scarlet Speedster seems to be an easy winner here, but who knows if our Winged Avenger can be a surprise hit (like Thor & Iron Man).

EDIT: Seems strange to me that WB prefers the egyptian route rather than the alien one. Cosmic heroes are the new thing these days, with both Thor and Green Lantern during 2011, Avengers next summer (and to a certain degree: the second Fantastic Four film a few years ago).
Perhaps they listened to my advice and will save Thanagar for the sequel, Hawkman II. Hahaha
