Simply Recycling Solutions Ltd in Mile Road, Bedford, has produced the used material for a scene involving a Siberian Prisoner of War camp for Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.

The blockbuster is currently being shot at Hangar 2 in Cardington and features British actor Christian Bale. Linda Murray from Cotton End got this shot ( ) during the filming.

The scrap company which has sites in Bedford, Luton and Northampton was contacted after a member of the movie’s production team drove past their business and dropped in for props.

Owner Jon O’Brien, 41, said: “It’s good to see the film makers keeping things local.

“One of the guys from the film drove past saw our sign and came in and asked for scrap to help build a part of their set.

“It’s going to be good to see my scrap on the silver screen when it’s all done.”

'Dark Knight' to touch down in Pittsburgh this week

The Dark Knight and his entourage touch down in Pittsburgh this week, turning Steel City into Gotham City by coating Downtown streets with snow, rerouting traffic and keeping city officials on hand for pyrotechnics.

Magnus Rex — the working title for "The Dark Knight Rises" — is scheduled to film in Pittsburgh from the end of this week through late August, said Dawn Keezer, director of the Pittsburgh Film Office. And the mayor's office anticipates the movie's economic impact will be significant, "in the millions" of dollars.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Pittsburgh in terms of jobs and exposure," said Joanna Doven, spokeswoman for Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.

A July 1 letter from a production company working with Warner Brothers says bus stops will be relocated, about a dozen roads will have sections closed at various times and traffic control will occur when filming takes place Downtown from Aug. 10 to Aug. 20.

Though filming Downtown is scheduled to occur only on Wednesdays through Sundays during the day, the Batman crew could keep hours as late as the Caped Crusader himself with activities occurring as early as 3 a.m. and as late as midnight, according to the Subconscious Productions letter. Also, Carlyle Condominiums residents on Fourth Avenue will be relocated Aug. 17 and 18 during filming, according to the letter.

This movie is the most high-profile film to come to Pittsburgh to date, Keezer said. "The whole difference is people know what this film is because it's a part of a series," she said.

The end of filmmaker Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, which is has a scheduled July 20, 2012, release date, will feature Oscar winner Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (that's Catwoman for D.C. Comic readers) and Tom Hardy as Bane, the brainy, strong D.C. villain who broke Batman's back in one comic tale.

Oscar winners Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman will return to the main cast as Alfred and Lucius Fox, respectively.

Bringing in dollars

"The Dark Knight Rises" is shooting in locations worldwide, including sites in India, England and Scotland in addition to the American cities of Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles, and filmmakers plan to do more IMAX camera work than was done on "The Dark Knight."

The BBC reported June 30 that stuntmen dressed in black making parachute jumps at a Scotland Highlands airstrip and a film crew there were working in connection with the film.

For this movie, filmmakers won't get a break on their budget from Pennsylvania's Film Tax Credit Incentive because it requires 60 percent of a film's total production budget to be spent in the Commonwealth to qualify, Keezer said.

Information about the budget for the film is unavailable, but imdb.com estimates that "The Dark Knight" had a budget of $185 million and made more than $1 billion worldwide, according to the Associated Press.

Filmmakers will spend dough on hotels, food and other supplies, and Keezer said all that money will boost the city's economy. One known expense — Pittsburgh police work — will cost roughly $89,000 for officers to staff barricades and road closures, control traffic and do some escorts, said Christie Gasiorowski, a Pittsburgh police officer in special events.

The Pittsburgh Film Office has helped more than 100 films and TV productions in the Pittsburgh region since 1990 to generate more than $575 million for the area, according to the office's website.

Connecting with Pittsburgh

The perfect backdrop for Gotham City because of its historic architecture, Pittsburgh could be viewed even more friendly to films if shooting goes well here, said Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership President and CEO Jeremy Waldrup. Recent films such as, "I Am Number Four," "Unstoppable" "Love and Other Drugs" and others were at least partially filmed in the region.

The inconvenience of having Batman shut parts of Downtown is outweighed by the "wow factor" of having such a major project in the city, blasting special effects and making it snow on Oliver Avenue and Smithfield Street in August, Waldrup said.

"That's all stuff that you don't see every day," he said. "I'm sure folks will try and catch a glimpse."

But Pittsburghers trying to sneak a peek at Nolan's latest film project may have to wait for it to hit the silver screen.

"The set is closed," Keezer said. "It's not open to the public at all."

Filmmakers have been working with the Pittsburgh Film Office for the past six months on the movie, preparing for a couple hundred crew members typical of a feature film and more than 10,000 extras to get to work, Keezer said.

More than 8,000 people stood in line at two open casting calls for paid Batman extras Downtown last month, but a Los Angeles casting director said they were looking for only 3,000 extras.

Shooting elsewhere

In addition to all the filming action Downtown, Batman also will be in action at the Steelers' Heinz Field in early August and at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute in late July and the university's Mellon Institute in late July and early August.

Pittsburghers still hoping for an early look at the film can sign up at BeInAMovie.com to be an unpaid extra from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at Heinz Field. Extras ages 14 and up can try their chances at door prizes such as a large flat-screen TV, vintage comics and more while they cheer on the Gotham Rogues in a football game against the Rapid City Monuments. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

BeInAMovie.com, the film's publicist, a Steelers spokesman and others did not provide further details about the film.

"I'm afraid that I can't answer any questions at this time regarding the filming in Pittsburgh," wrote Claudia Kalindjian, the film's publicist, in an email. "We are operating a strictly closed set on the film and trying to keep our exposure to a minimum."

Kevin O’Leary spotted the new Batcave being built on MGM’s lot in California. The Batcave that was used in Batman Begins was housed in London, and it looks like we’ll definitely be getting a new one in The Dark Knight Rises. I can’t wait to see what improvements Bruce Wayne has made to the “southeast corner”. The Dark Knight Rises will be filming in Los Angeles after they wrap up in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, Mr. O’Leary was not allowed to take a picture of the newly constructed Batcave, hopefully Warner Bros. releases some production stills soon.

A SCRAP metal company from Bedford is playing a key role in the latest Batman film.

Simply Recycling Solutions was approached by the makers of the The Dark Knight Rises, which stars Christian Bale, to provide props for scenes being filmed at the Cardington Hangars.

John O’Brien, who runs the business, said: “It all happened by accident really.

“We have a couple of little signs outside the unit and the guy just saw them.

“A posh car turned up and a man asked me if I sold scrap metal.”

Although the company only buys scrap metal when the man explained that he needed the metal as props for Batman scenes John jumped at the chance to help.

“He said: “They needed the metal objects to be used as found utensils in a Siberian prison camp scene.

“He also wanted scarp for an industrial unit set that is going to have wires dangling down.

Obviously in a Siberian prison camp you are not just going to get out a bone china cup, they wanted things that could be used as other things.”

Parts of all three Batman films have been filmed at Cardington Hangars.

The new film’s release date is set for summer 2012.

Catwoman Stunt Woman crashes into camera (with Video Link)

The budget for "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" might have just jumped up another six figures -- because last Friday, Catwoman's stunt double BARRELED through a super-expensive IMAX camera ... and TMZ has the crushing footage.

It's unclear who messed up -- the stunt-double or the cameraman -- but either way, the camera appeared to be blown to smithereens.

It was all shot outside some building at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh -- which, we're told, is supposed to be Gotham City Hall in the movie.

Thankfully, no one was hurt -- and with a budget of $250 MILLION ... a broken camera's just a drop in the bucket.

Sources close to production tell us both the camera and the cameraman were not injured during the incident -- but if you look closely, you can SEE camera shrapnel ... and fixing those things ain't cheap!

A rep for Warner Bros. had no comment.

Batman-on-Film.com is reporting that The Dark Knight Rises will be filming at Queensboro Bridge in New York City when the production arrives there later this year. Details are slim, but it’s apparently going to be used for a “big action scene”. Other rumored New York locations include the New York Stock Exchange, and then they’ll cross the border and shoot in Newark, New Jersey.

There's still Los Angeles and New York left to go, but this weekend Christopher Nolan finished filming The Dark Knight Rises scenes in Pittsburgh. Nolan and the producers used this newspaper ad (thanks to 'Yurka' and 'Dragon_316ca') to thank the city for their work with the production.

'Dark Knight Rises' pays $20k to replace Pittsburgh trees

The Dark Knight Rises team paid "tens of thousands of dollars" to remove a number of trees from the streets of Pittsburgh, it has been revealed

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 24 leafy trees were chopped down for filming in order to make the scenes look like they had been filmed in winter.

Originally the leaves were to be plucked. However, officials worried that the trees would have suffered permanent damage.

Producers have also apparently donated a further $20,000 (£12,100) to non-profit group Tree Pittsburgh so replacement trees can be planted.

WALES has been revealed as the home of the Batcave, after moviemakers were spotted filming parts of the next blockbuster instalment here.

Not content with West Walian Christian Bale playing the title role, the superhero franchise’s Welsh credentials have been further boosted by a Brecon Beacons waterfall doubling for the famous cavern.

The area’s starring role in one of the biggest films of 2012 is the latest coup for the Beacons, having already played host to a galaxy of Hollywood A-listers in recent years.

For the latest Batman film – The Dark Knight Rises – a team led by Batman director Christopher Nolan spent two days filming on National Trust land at Henrhyd Waterfall in the Neath Valley.

The 90ft waterfall near the village of Coelbren is the highest in the park and a tourist favourite because of a path that takes intrepid walkers behind the waterfall.

One insider who witnessed the filming said: “They were there for a couple of days just a few weeks ago.

“I understand it’s going to be used in the opening sequence of the film, as Batman discovers the Batcave.

“But we’ll have to wait and see.”

Liam Neeson Talks Dark Knight Rises

“I’m eager to see this one,” he said of the new film, before adding, “I haven’t got a ****ing clue what it’s about.” This despite the fact that his voice was used in the teaser trailer, sparking rumours of a Ra’s al Ghul return.

“Chris Nolan's made wonderful films, very rich, dark and complex, especially [The Dark Knight]," he said, before referring to how the last film was “cloaked in tragedy," after Heath Ledger’s death.

The internet had previously been rife with rumours that Neeson had filmed a cameo for The Dark Knight Rises, although given how close Nolan keeps his cards to his chest, that could still be the case. Perhaps Neeson filmed his scene without knowing exactly how the rest of the film was going to pan out?

The Dark Knight Rises will take place quite a while after the events of The Dark Knight. How long? Eight years.

Director Christopher Nolan has spoken to Empire, saying "surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state."

The director also spoke about the choice of Bane as the villain. "With Bane, we're looking to give Batman a challenge he hasn't had before. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we're testing Batman both physically as well as mentally."

Nolan also discussed the villain's fighting style of the physically imposing antagonist. "He's brutal. Brutal. He's a big dude who's incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It's not about fighting. It's about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action."

Empire also spoke to the film's costume designer Lindy Hemming, who revealed the reason for Bane's mask. "He was injured early in his story. he's suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can't survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at his back, where there are two cannisters."

Can't wait till next year? Well, a prologue to the film will be shown in select IMAX cinemas on December 21, 2011. According to Nolan, the footage is "basically the first six, seven minutes of the film", a sort of "introduction to Bane, and a taste of the rest of the film."
