Plus as with most superhero mythos some of the best stories can come from after the origin, especially with a character like Thor that has so many fantastical elements that needed very steady introduction. And now that those elements have been established well and gelled with a wide audience it'll be awesome to see a talented director just go nuts and have fun with it and take us further. And Marvel's been great picking directors so far, so fingers crossed.

No Branagh? The dynamic between Thor, Loki, and Odin were one of the things that made the first one stand out. I hope the new director is able to replicate the family dynamic like Branagh did.

2 year gap is like normal for sequels. Plus Marvel's not like Fox in that will rigidly follow their release dates when it doesn't suit their productions; they have shown the ability to adjust their schedules when the situation demands it.

While I'm disappointed that Branagh isn't coming back, I'm not exactly surprised. Auteurs are more of the "one and done" sort.

I'm disappointed Ken won't be coming back, although he's hardly the only man in Hollywood that can handle the material. I trust a suitable replacement will be found, I just hope the decision isn't about saving $$$.

I figure he simply didn't want to commit to another project of this size so soon; two years doesn't leave much time to go off and do something else.

I'm all for a big, epic Thor movie, but I think earth needs to be involved.
I think the chances of a Thor film not set on Earth at least partially are pretty slim.

Iron Man had to cast someone else to play War Machine; we already lost our original Bruce Banner; so I hope no one else gets lost.
Might as well get used to it. This kind of thing is going to happen considering the amount of people and schedules involved.

It's too bad he is not returing to direct, but is being attached to a superhero franchise really his style anyways? He did a great job bringing Thor to the silver screen and helped create a franchise. Same goes with Jon Favreau and hopefully Joe Johnston. Hope he stays on as a producer for the sequel.

I am not worried about them 'rushing' out a sequel. The example everybody points out is Iron Man 2, but the quality of that movie was up there with the best comic book movies. TDK included. The only issues brought up with IM2 was the script and other minor gripes people had with the movie (not long enough Whiplash fight etc.). And alot of that had to do with the chosen comedy writer of the movie. I don't think Thor 2 will have that problem and it will share the same quality as Iron Man/IM2/Thor.

I also am starting to think that Marvel is going to make good movies regardless who directs. They haven't failed us yet and continue to make interesting director choices. Unlike DC/WB, they know what they want to do with their movies and characters. Marvel has a strong producer with Kevin Feige and they continue to make movies that audiences enjoy. Dare I say they are the live action version of Pixar?

I think the odds of Brett ratner helming a MCU movie is about the same as Dubbya getting re-elected. Ain't gonna happen, folks.

Agreed. I mean it's no common secret to anyone on how people felt that Bret's direction for the third X Men film really put the first of two hard dents into the franchise that had been so well received previously under the helm of Singer.

I doubt that Marvel Studios would be willing to risk Thor or any of their characters under his helm.

That depends on the script really. If you have a movie set in the 40ies who do you call? Joe Johnston! If you have a movie that focuses on shakespearean family drama, who do you call) Ken Branagh!
So whatever the script for Thor 2 calls for, I'm sure they'll find the right director. So far, with the exception of Whedon, Marvel did a great job with their decisions.

Three straight years of Thor seems like overkill. Also, boo on no Branagh.

I don't think they are going to be getting Peter Jackson or JJ Abrams to direct a movie that is supposed to come out in 2 years, so people should not get their hopes up.

To be quite honest, I think Mel Gibson would be awesome for Thor 2. Call me crazy, I know. Neil Blomkamp, Spike Jonze, Brad Bird, and Terry Gilliam are also interesting.

Just because everyone hates Mel doesn't make him a bad director.
Thing is that a lot of talented people might refuse to work with him.

Also he might try to force everyone to speak ancient Norse.

Call me crazy, but I think calling Whedon a "bad decision" is a little baffling considering his movie won't be seen for another year yet.

No, Mel is a great director. Thor 2 might be a stretch for him, but he would be a cool choice.

Marvel was the studio that helped bring Robert Downey Jr. out of the depths into superstardom. Anybody remember RDJ before 2008? He was a punchline. Maybe they could do the same with Mel. It would be really diffficult though and probally too risky for Marvel with an established franchise. Mel may have burned too many bridges with his comments.

I agree, I don't like the move to have 2 sequels for Marvel that summer, and that it will be three straight years of Thor. Plus, Hemsworth has gone on to state that he wanted to take a break from the character after The Avengers. I don't really like this move for Marvel at all.

If anything, I think they should try and enact that plan to make smaller scale films and begin franchises out of other characters. What ever happened to Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Luke Cage, or an Iron Fist film?

Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, I just don't think it's a good idea to have both.
