He worked on the script for the first Thor, but he also wrote FF2 and some other comedy. I'm not happy about this. He is probably the one who put those stupid jokes in the first Thor.

Don Payne is just the first of probably many screenwriters. Thor 2 will likely be a team effort, like the first movie was.

^ Exactly. If anything, it's good that someone from the first film is working on this script.

But it's not good that that someone from the first film is Don Payne.
Don Payne is a writer for The Simpsons. And not really the good Simpsons, either. The episodes he was credited for are co-writes. After The Simpsons, he tried his hand at superhero films with FFROTSS and My Super Ex-Girlfriend... ...(pauses through awkward silence)... Ahem. Then he had a partial credit on the Thor script, which is generally described as being written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, the two leads. (I'd say the O.P. is spot on when he says that Payne "is probably the one who put those stupid jokes in the first Thor.") After that, he wrote the script for Maximum Ride, in pre-pro at Columbia....and was promptly asked for a rewrite that "featured more action." This is *definitely* not a stellar resume to submit for the sequel to a fledgling franchise for a fledgling movie studio trying to get their footing. |

That, and remember this: Zak Penn is not a good writer. But, he wrote TIH's early drafts. TIH was a good movie. If they can get enough out of Penn to touch it up into a good script, same can be done for Don Payne.

TIH is a flawed film, however, and I attribute it to having a fairly typical Zak Penn plot.

It's funny how people in this thread are mentioning Thor being written by multiple people and then acting as though Payne was the sole writer on Silver Surfer.

i'd rather wait and see before jumping to the conclusion that it's bad just yet. try to look at it this way. he wrote FF2 and super ex-girlfriend, but also wrote for thor. you are trying to compare movies from Fox Studios at that time to a movie from Marvel Studios now. same writer but different companies. wouldn't this actually show that the companies are going about things differently as far as scripts go in this instance. maybe there is more freedom or better care taken with the characters at marvel studios. or maybe the collective is just better at marvel studios compared to the previous films he worked on.
i wouldn't blame the writer for the outcome of the film since the director interprets/decides what to keep and what to cut from the script and film. it's not really so black and white when it comes to a writer's script. how many times has a script been modified since it's initial run? a director doesn't read the script and say perfect im gonna do this word for word. no he comes on and gives his 2 cents then takes it where he sees it in his head. like i said just wait and see, it could be good or bad. no use worrying just yet. after you see the movie then you can complain about it.

I'm more worried about who will be directing at this point.

Branagh will be like Burton on Batman Forever, they shove his name on so fans don't freak out but he contributes pretty much nothing. Branagh has his own movie for 2013.

Meh, I kind of wish someone else had the chance to write it so he could do other things. I think his influence helped make the film a) too jokey and b) too silly like FF2 was.
That is my opinion though. |

Good point, and that may be the saving grace from this particular bit of indigestible information. Whether the godawful gaffes in FF were directly attributable to Don Payne, or instead to meddling from Fox suits, the fact remains that Marvel Studios is obviously *far* more protective of the authenticity of their scripts and characters. So while Fox would have allowed/ encouraged/ ordered Don Payne to royally screw up the FF scripts, Marvel has not/will not allow him to do the same with Thor or any other Marvel property. |

Well Protosevich did a damn good job on the first draft, I don't see why not give him another chance now that everything is layed out

Agreed, or what about Fraction K G? It would make sense for one of the writers of the comic to at least outline the movie.

don't forget marvel studios only makes comic book movies at this point. it's their bread and butter, they will try very hard to protect the properties.
