A certain actor with the last name of Hanks is going to be dropping by the show!

I shouldn't have misled you like that. It's Colin, not Tom. I apologize.

Colin is just as good. He was awesome in Dexter.

I don't think too many people would turn down a quick cameo on 30 Rock. Those SNL connections really pay off.

I knew the second Alex walked downstairs in that dress and coat that it was only a matter of time before someone mistook her for a prositute.

Also love that Brad's Friends comparisons were spot-on. Well done, Black Chandler.

I read a review today saying that Cuthbert doesn't cut it in comparison to the rest of the cast. I call bull****. She's been much funnier than I expected her to be at the beginning of the series. She does "dumb but adorable" well.

I've laughed at a LOT of Cuthbert's stuff, especially when she got a snake and tried to fee it peeps.

I've been trying to watch the latest episode, but it hasn't appeared on demand yet and Modern Family has completely disappeared off the list.

I figured out what bothers me about this show. I can't find any distinctive character traits for any of the characters. They all seem like copy and pastes of each other. They all speak in the same caustically sarcastic manner, using what I assume is supposed to be "hip" language. They're all adorably oafish. Nothing stands out about any of them.

That said, I do like the situations in the sitcom. They've hit a few pitfalls of overused sitcom cliches, but at this point no sitcom can avoid them. I just wish the characters would grow to be a little more distinctive than they are.

I just don't see it. They're all trendy New Yorkers the "dumb but adorable" things you mentioned earlier. It's either buying a racist parrot, or wearing too many V necks...ensemble casts only work if you have comic foils playing off of straight men. I see all comics and no straight men.

Being a straight man doesn't mean you can't be dumb(not in modern comedies). Everybody loves Raymond had evey character acting dumb or stupid including Debra who for the most part was the sane one.

Penny, Jane, and Dave are the strongest personality wise. Everyone else acts against those three.

I can't think of a modern ensemble comedy that has a standard straight man.

I know there's never going to be one standard straight man, but there's usually a somewhat consistent one. Ross from Friends was pretty standard, HIMYM has Ted consistently playing it straight.

Everybody is always so witty and bantering in this show. Nobody ever actually talks like these people do. I know I should allow some variance it for it being a tv show, but I think it's taken a little over the top.

If you paid attention you would know they were Chicagoans and had distinct characteristics.

I think Dave is as close to a straight man character. He's the only who usually fights against whatever stupidity they're going on before being pulled in. Alex and Max's V-neck observations. He's the only one who's job we really see on a regular basis without it being a joke. Like Ed O'Neil on Modern Family.

I see what you're saying about banter, but I don't think that kind of comedy exist anymore. Not since like Roseanne with John Goodman's character. Modern comedies fall in the Scrubs territory where everyone is some degree of insane, and we watch for character dynamics. JD and Turk. JD and Dr.Cox.

Trendy Chicagoans, then. I still don't see their distinct characteristics.

Thinking about the character dynamics, it's made me realize some of the distinctions between the characters. Penny's boy crazy, Jane is the organized one, Max is horribly disorganized. Alex and Dave are kinda bland.

But even recognizing that they have distinct personalities, they all interact the same way. By being snappy and sarcastic. So those personalities aren't showcased like they could be, and it makes them blend together in my head.

I love every character.....EXCEPT PENNY!!!

My GOD how I hate her! Her dumbass abbreviations and the way she always says A-MAH-ZING! They even brought up both of those annoying traits on the show but she still does them.
