Coppola is way past his prime when it comes to directing.

My outside the box choice is Steve McQueen, directed the excellent Hunger.

I'm not sure if he's really a good fit for the material.

But I would suggest Phil Nibbelink, or obvious reasons.

Probably cost the same to make as X-men. Marvel won't hire Vaughn for the Thor sequel for 2 reasons

1) He'll probably be doing X-men (second?) Class
2) He'd cost them too much money.

They'll probably go for some intriguing person that no-one ever thought of. Joe Cornish, perhaps.

That would be an interesting choice, but sadly I don't see the studio considering him.

I can't come up with any director suggestions yet, but as soon as I can, I'll add here.

Tomas Alfredson would be a good candidate, he's a good director and I like how he and Hoytema approached the camera shots in Let the Right One In and the trailer for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy shows he can handle the performances with an ensemble cast. He haven't handle anything that's really action wise but I think he could handle that aspect well enough.

I love what Francis Lawrence did with Constantine and I Am Legend, I'd like to see him take a shot at it.

That said, I'm loving a lot of the names in this thread. There's some genuinely interesting choices (not Spielberg, Cameron, Jackson and Abrams over and over again).

Joe Wright could be great, given how strong Hanna was, but Thor's greatest strength was its lighter touch and tone. That's largely why it did as well as it did. Ruben Fleischer would be a cool choice, as he can both shoot action well and deliver the witty humour that made Thor so much fun.

I've no idea who should direct cause I remember how people were thrilled over Ang Lee directed Hulk and how it was gonna turn out epic and great or Martin Campbell on GL and how he did good work on his past projects so I won't get behind a proven director a 100%.

Actually, your reasoning isn't that obvious imo. steve barron just seems kind of...random. i mean, yeah, he directed TMNT, but that is a completley different type of film. and i never even heard of the other guy, after wkiking him i came up with the guy who directed "An American tale: Feival Goes west", and is a storyboard artist on Wolverine and the x men. i mean...why? not bashing of course, i'm just curious why you think either of them are good fits?

anyway, for my contribution, david yates. the guy showed with Order of the Phoenix that he can portray fantastical elements in a modern twist, i think he could make an awesome Thor flick.

Wasn't Ratner the first choice for X1 before they went with Singer?

I like it! Hogfather was amazing and he did it with such a small budget. He didn't get nearly the amount of praise he deserved for that.

How about Andrew Stanton?

Sure he's primarily an animated director, but Wall-E and Finding Nemo both had very expansive worlds, on big budgets, to oscar wins/ great acclaim. To boot his trailer for John Carter From Mars looks fantastic.

I was thinking the same thing after I saw the John Carter trailer. He seems like someone who handles fantasty/sci-fi well.

I'd love to see Peter Jackson do Thor 2 (I know he won't though, since he'll be too busy with The Hobbit for the next couple years). I'd LOVE to see a LOTR-style Thor film. I guess Del Toro would be a decent choice as well.

Maybe Genndy Tartakovsky, seems like a lot of other animation directors are making the jump to live-action and Genndy has done some awesome stuff with Samurai Jack, Clone Wars, and Sym-Bionic Titan. His projects always have a cinematic quality to them IMO, I think he could do great stuff with Thor.
