It would be great to see Tartakovsky make the jump to live action. Yates is a personal favorite of mine as well. aside from proving how well he can handle fantastical elements in a modern setting with the harry potter films, he's also shown that he can direct great character moments in his sleep as well as shown how versatile of a director he is. just look at the last 4 HP films: OOTP one has this sleek, modern blue looks to it, while HBP has this dark, moody, artistic tone to it. DH has a fast paced road movie feel to it, and while i haven't seen the last one, it looks very big, operatic and epic. i would be ecstatic if yates got this.

I think Yates has said before that after Harry Potter he wants to avoid blockbusters for a while.

And can you blame him? Four Harry Potter films, more or less back to back. That could exhaust anyone!

David Yates! Please! Or James Cameron. Or Peter Jackson.

that's diappointing to hear about david yates taking a break from blockbusters for a while. we need more action movies with the amount of depth and artistry he brings to his movies.

Indeed but it is quite understandable. Even Peter Jackson said he was kind of worn out after LOTR and King Kong. I remember he used to say with glee that after LOTR he wanted to make "little films that no-one will see". Ha!

Most of the names on the list were mentioned already in this thread. can't say I'm overwhelmed. On the other hand, if hey really get Duncan Jones to direct, they are geniuses.

edgar wright, duncan jones, matt reeves, there really doesn't seem to be a bad choice at all, except for that rupert sanders guy, not bad necessarily, but i never heard of him.

well, did jones make source code before or after turning down the superman gig? if it was before, maybe he'd be ready now that he's done a mainstream actioneer.

The thing is that Duncan Jones isn't ready to tackle a big project yet, so I'm pretty sure he won't do this.

Anyway, I don't know what to think about these choices, and I'm not sure I want them for Thor 2.

I do not know about this. Except for David Yates, all of them are kind of small-time. OK, Joss Whedon is directing the Avengers, but that is an ensemble cast, so you have different fan-bases (mostly Iron Man anyway) to support the film. BUt come on! Thor had a nice movie, written by JMS, Protosevich, and a bunch of guys came in and re-write it to make it fit the budget. But now, it's being written by the guy who wrote My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Fantastic Four 2, and not much else except for some Simpsons episodes. Then, their choices to direct are a bunch of directors whose experience are from low budget films (again, except for Yates and Andrew Adamson who directed Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia, respectively). Looking at the choices, they are the directors of Cloverfield, Source Code, Limitless, Serenity, etc. Meh. With a low-rent writer, you need a high-caliber director.

Edgar Wright is a genius but I don't think he would like the amount of control Marvel doesn't give him with a film that size. Ant man is more likely because it's smaller but Thor 2? Hmm.

Yates is cool but I don't think he's into it. He's probably tired and deserves a rest.

No to the guy directing that Twilight rip off Snow White and the Huntsmen or whatever it's called.

Jones would be interesting but Marvel will need to let him do his thing and not order him around even if it means threatening toy sales. It'll work out very well for them if they do that.

Name one high-caliber director who worked with Marvel so far. There is none and that probably has a reason.

I had a dream last night about Thor 2 and in that dream David Bowie played Malekith. Could be interesting, especially if Duncan Jones would direct

I've always been under the impression that Walt did base part of his design on Jareth . Unfortunately David's a little over the (faerie) hill now, 15 years ago I would have said 'sure'. You need someone with a British accent and thin, elfin features who looks mature but not old . Someone like Steve Valentine.

No to Whedon. I like him a lot but leave him on Avengers.

The writers aren't a problem. Marvel always gets a draft and then lets the director/producer go over it with a comb and do rewrites during the process anyway. The script is no more than a rough outline to them.

They've only had 6 films released so far, that can change. That SHOULD change. If you have a mere Don Payne to write your movie, you need a very capable director to polish whatever drivel he has written. Otherwise, it will feel like a TV-movie. And we do not want that for Thor, now, do we? No.

If a high-caliber director is not possible, then get Mark Protosevich to write the screenplay, so whatever new director (straight from film school or low budget tv series he came from) won't be able to mess it up, much.
