Yeah, General Lane is just a terrible, terrible character. Inexcusably bad.

Besides, I liked the bad relationship he had with Lois. Even implying he would kill her!
It's every bad soap opera and comic book cliche one can think of.

That Sam Lane was a different character.

Agreed 100%.

When the Lanes were horse farmers it gave Lois a connection to Clark. She came from a similar rural small-town place. It was nice. General Thunderbolt Lane is every bad cliche and a ripoff.

isnt General Lane the main reason as to why Lois is a hardass, stubborn, etc, i cant see her being one with her family being a bunch of farmers, we'd have a female clark kent then. It doesnt bother me anyway, for all we know, Sam Lane ends up working with Superman to help take down Zod.

It's not the being a General part that's a problem, but the characterisation. I don't like the xenophobic General father who hates The Hul.....I mean Superman.

i don't like how General Lane is basically General Ross...they're both military fathers of the love interest who hate our hero.

i also don't like how Perry White is basically J. Jonah Jameson! they're both loud mouthed Editors-in-chief for the newspaper our hero works at and who smoke cigars!!!

see what i did there?

I don't even mind a xonophobic general. But it's like putting R2-D2 and C-3PO in the prequels. It's forced. Too big a coincidence. It's one of those things that takes believability and throws it right out the window.

What you did there is point out generic cliche comic book characters. I hope there isn't a screaming Perry White either.

Lois should be a hardass because she came into journalism as a young idealist and the harsh realities of life made her lose hope. When Superman appears and gives a hopeless world hope again, Lois gains back he confidence in people.

Except Perry has always been supportive of Superman and he's usually like a father figure to Clark. In fact, another way that the Kents dying makes Superman better is it allows Perry and Alice White to be close to Clark, as they remind him of the Kents but are not so close that they know he's Superman, which keeps him independent.

No, that makes his hatred for Superman even *more* believable. Almost all dads hate and mistrust their daughters' boyfriends.

Perry White is not the same as JJJ. Are there similarities? Yeah.

Are they so similar that they feel like the same character? No.

The main difference being that Perry White has a positive view of Superman, while Jonah on the other hand, has a negative view of Spider-Man.

Superman is the originator of many comic cliche's....for this i give them a pass on most (not all) cliches they will use in this movie.

i'm not even gonna get into the Kents dying with you. i know your stance and i don't agree with it. your logic behind your stance is pretty sound and i'm sure you can provide thousands of reasons why it's better, but i can also provide thousands of reasons why the Kents being alive is better....but i honestly don't want to get into that with you because 1) neither of us will budge 2) i don't feel like derailing the thread like it always seems to happen anytime you bring that topic up and 3) it's approaching my bedtime and i don't feel like writing a novel.

the main difference HERE being that General Ross is a main focal point of the story, where as here General Lane most likely won't.

There's no upside for keeping the Kents alive except that they are likable characters. Scenes with Clark learning from them and going to them for help and support and advice is Superboy material.

Yeah, I didn't want an original, smart, creative new movie anyway. I'd much prefer a subpar, cartoonish, cliche-filled rehash, joke of a movie.

I think at one point, Superman will be captured by General Lane and the military, and Lennix's character will free him somehow.
Just wild speculation here,
but you all have to admit, the military presence in this movie is very significant, with two generals (not counting Zod), and one (Meloni's) being a major character in the film.
We're getting an The Incredible Hulk type plot here, with Zod thrown in for good measure.
Sounds interesting!

My theory is that Lennix is the one and only "General" titled character in MOS and Meloni will end up being announced as Lex Luthor!

*to the rest of the Hypesters* so how about that Harry Lennix huh? heck of an actor, glad he's on board. i've liked him in the movies i saw him in, even though he played an douchey boyfriend in "Mo' Money"!

Iron Man and Thor were both littered with cliches....yet there are seen as smart, creative movies far from subpar or rehashed.

so i take it you're not digging this whole origin story or Zod being in the film? since you know......they've already been done before.
