If they went with a monthly service, I would be in. Not crazy about ala carte.

Not at Apple prices.

I could either stream dozens of hours of tv a month from Netflix (at least), or a handful of episodes from iTunes. Owning the digital copy isn't worth the price difference.

I actually just switched my plan earlier tonight to DVD-by-mail only. I've had enough issues with streaming that I'm cool with watching the actual movie...

*Granted, I haven't had THAT many issues with the streaming service..but I've only been hardcore using it the past year/year and a half and I've already had more issues with it in that time then the past seven or so I've had with mailings; mostly having an over-pixally (?) picture or having to continually re-load some things.

Not a huge deal by any stretch, but I DO miss hearing commentary and interviews and stuff which I can check out on the mail-stuff...

I switched to bluray/dvd only by mail. Nothing in the instant stream really was worth it to me, most movies were old or straight to video. I singed up recently with blockbuster where its $15 a month for unlimited game rentals, so I have resistance 3 now and if I wanna keep it for 2 months I can with no late fees. Same price and everything as netflix but with games. I did this over gamefly because I literally have a blockbuster near my condo within 15 minutes of walking distance. There are just way too many games coming out between now and feb and I cant afford to keep shelling out $60 for each game.

Still currently on 2 DVD and streaming. Their streaming content sucks for recent television series and movies but they have them on DVD and conversely it's not worth the wait to watch older series or movies on DVD so I stream them.

These days, all new games hit $40 within 2 weeks of their release at some place.

Regular quality...HD costs more and is considered an add-on I believe. Unless I'm thinking of something else.

Um no it's not. I get HD whenever it's available and/or when my connection is good enough.

Yeah if you have the connection and the video is capable you can get HD streaming. Usually I just disable it since it's not that big an improvement on a computer screen.

Yeah, only in a few instances have I really been able to tell a big difference in the quality...

That's me right there, except I was only getting 1 DVD at a time. My family likes watching the new movies, and I've been streaming all the old shows I haven't seen since I was a kid.

I found this article very interesting. Here's a snipet.

Quote:
Netflix said today that it expects to report 1 million fewer U.S. subscribers in the third quarter than previously anticipated, a 4 percent shortfall. That number includes almost 800,000 fewer DVD-only subscribers than expected.
If you're one of those who cancelled a subscription hoping it would send a message to company managers, well, they got it and so did Wall Street. At 11:15 a.m. PT, Netflix's stock was trading at about $169, down $39 or 18 percent.

I just changed my plan to Streaming only. I'm not getting DVD's that often anymore anyways, so I don't think I'll be losing much. It's mostly a financial reason too. I can bump it back up when I can afford it.

I do 2 bluays out at a time now, streaming sucks. We are still a long way away where a service like netflix can make movies like thor instantly available to stream. Vudu, hulu, itunes and even blockbust have them beat with exclusives.

I've not yet run out of things to watch on Stream that interest me. So all these claims that "streaming sucks" are really unfounded, imo.

I've gotta agree with Squirrel to a point - back within the first few months-first year of streaming, yeah then it DID suck: no selection (think 5 items in each genre..lol!), and half-the time the actual viewing experience would either be continually buffering or pretty blocky during night/dark scenes.

Its improved a ton since those days, although it still isn't 'there' enough for me to personally switch to that only. On my computer a regular, plain DVD will still look better then the bulk of their streaming stuff, IMO.

I am curious to see what happens with the service within the next year or so though...

Netflix to Split DVD Service into Qwikster, Add Video Games

I am happy they want to add video games but the bigger question is will they have a good amount of games and will the shipping and availibility be way better then gamefly? I currently have the blockbuster thing for games so I also have to ask will blockbuster get games before they do like new movies now?

I dont get why they dont just keep the Netflix name for the DVD service
...or at least pick a better name that "Qwikster"

I wouldn't go that far but this is another serious gamble on their part. It doesn't make sense to do this now after they already royally screwed up with the price changes. It would have been smarter to announce this division of NetFlix into two companies and that each charges the same amount for the services. Now they may lose even more customers or it might be a major gain for them. It really comes down to how many former subscribers return.

Hmm. If the price is right and they have the same selection of games as Gamefly offers (without a new release delay like Blockbuster has), I might just buy into it. Netflix was always faster in getting my movies than GF is with my games.

Yeah, the one thing I always hated about Gamefly when I did have it is how long it took to get the games.

Yeah, it's a big difference. Netflix was a two day turn around and GF is a five day one. For me at least. I'm on the two game subscription, so it doesn't hurt me too much. If they can a have competitive price and also have zero delay for new games unlike BB, then I will most likely take them up on it.
