Marvel Studios isn't. They did to Avengers exactly what I've been hoping they *wouldn't* for the past 2-3 years: turn the movie into a sausagefest. Avengers has some truly great heroines on the roster, and many of them are obvious choices for the first film (*hint:* FOUNDING MEMBERS....*koff koff*). Instead, Widow winds up carrying the lone torch for the women. It's sad and ironic, too, considering that they've got Joss Whedon at the helm. Joss has made a career out of creating strong, independent and interesting female leads; but he doesn't get to put any of that expertise to use here.

It's Thor, captain America, iron man, the hulk, hawk eye, and black widow. Lol. That's a nearly perfect roster. They can throw in more women in the sequel if they need to. I'm satisfied

No matter what Marvel Studios does they'll never please everyone. Joss has said in numerous interviews that he loved filming scenes with the women and always wanted to do more with them when their scenes were over.

For me, personally, I'd love to see more women obviously. But even though there are only two female characters in The Avengers, what I'm most concerned about is how they are portrayed. And I don't think I'll have much to worry about, since Whedon's helming the project.
For me, it's always about quality of the writing and characterization. Which is probably why XMFC gets middling marks for its handled the women roles. Sure, they had more women heroes than The Avengers, but the writing was pretty lackluster for them, excluding Mystique. And for her, I think Jennifer Lawrence brought a lot more to that role too. Can do without Tigra. Substitute her with Black Widow or Spider-Woman.

I left Widow out because she's already in the movie. I'd love to see Jessica Drew onscreen someday, but she's not traditionally an Avenger; only in very recent years.

As good as Cobie looks in Avengers, She does not seem right for Catwoman, same can be said for Scarlett, just saying because some were suggesting the names of theses actresses for the role of Catwoman in TDKR before Anne was confirmed back then.

I'm pretty sure Cobie was being suggested for Lois Lane and Wonder Woman. I don't recall ever seeing her suggested for Catwoman. Scarlett, yes, but not Cobie.

I've seen enough of the trailers, promos, set visits, leaks, rumors and everything else to see that Maria Hill's role is almost nonexistent, and that Widow is *definitely* not a female "lead" in this movie. Scarjo complained to Joss that her character wasn't doing enough and couldn't hang with the big boys. So yeah....the one and a half women featured in this movie are lost in a sea of sausage.

Black Widow shouldn't be able to hang with the big boys though if you think about it, her expertise lies in stealth and covert missions rather than an open battlefield.
If Marvel wants a female character that can hang with the big boys they should introduce Ms. Marvel and have her as a member of the team in Avengers 2.

Im guessing that maria hill is the womans voice that has been aaid to introduce the avengers backstories at the beginning of the film. If this is true, it seems there is a motive for having her in particular "narrate" the intro. I wonder, does maria hill do much in the books besides take over as director of shield? Does she become a villain or change into a superhero or something? Just curious.
