Why does what she's doing there remind of something her character Robin would do on How I Met Your Mother?

I just want to put on record: Sucks to Warner Bros. for not having her as Wonder Woman! Now we've got Diana Prince and Wonder Woman all wrapped in SHIELD packaging!

Honestly, she wasn't, at all, in this movie. She was quite likable. Maybe that's just the Cobie effect

I swear this is why Joss cast her as Hill.

I think he just wants to work with the whole HIMYM cast.

Next up, Jason Segel.

Then, maybe he'll get around to Ted, maybe not

Smulders' performance was the one off note in a stellar cast, IMO. She said in an interview that she was hired to play Hill because she was the only actress tested for the role who the producers believed would actually shoot Nick Fury. Well, she never showed that sort of toughness even once in The Avengers. There were a couple of scenes in which one would have expected Smulders to be forceful and in-your-face with Sam Jackson, but instead she played them flat. Hill is supposed to be a regular ***hole, a character you love to hate because she's constantly clashing with the heroes (and she herself is definitely is not a hero). Unfortunately, they chose an actress who played the role as if the character was respectful and wanted to be liked, rather than like someone who would stab her commander in the back and claw her way to the top over his corpse.

Nothing against Smulders, but she was miscast. She might have made a better Wasp, who is as light and fluffy as the actress seems to want to be.

I don't really see what's wrong with that, it's a nice reinterpretation of the character, in my opinion of course

I don't see the need to rehabilitate a hated character when they could have simply used a more established and well-liked SHIELD agent in her place. Hill still tried (and failed) to back-talk Fury, and tried to rein him in at points, only Smulders' acting made the character a weak and ineffectual adversary. If Fury shouted at her she'd shake like a leaf. Actually, I'd pay to see that. It would make the Banner/Romanoff confrontation look like a couple of toffs having high tea.

Once the 4th passes, I'll add my .02 in about Cobie's version of Hill.

I'm a huge nerd, probably, but finding out Cobie Smulders is married to Taran Killam of Saturday Night Live made me dork out for several minutes. I didn't realize they were together. LOVE both of them.

I haven't seen the movie yet so I don't know how Cobie fares in her role as Maria Hill, but if they make TA2 (which I believe they will), I hope Hill will get more development and more screentime. I don't have a problem with Whedon's interpretation of Hill's character, because not everything translate well from comics to film, but I do want her to exert her opinions more and bump head with everything in SHIELD and Avengers, because I want Hill to be a very capable agent and not just a "Yes sir" assistant for Fury.

IMHO, I wouldn't want to watch a supporting character being the annoying naysayer in a film like this. As long as she's smart and competent in her role as a SHIELD agent that's good enough for me.

I thought Smulders' performance was fine. I mean, I didn't hate Maria Hill, so if that was the goal, she failed. But I really don't think that was the goal. She seemed like a good, capable SHIELD agent who wasn't entirely confident in Fury's methods. Nothing more, nothing less. She seemed like a character with potential to be expanded on in the sequel.

Smulders was a cipher as Hill. An empty catsuit. As someone else here said, Smulders performed the same function as Sigourney Weaver's character did in Galaxy Quest: she called out status reports that were nothing that Fury couldn't have seen with his own eye. The two points where she should have convincingly portrayed Hill's opposition to Fury were dull. There should have been some spark, something to show that Hill had total conviction in her opinion, but there was nothing. Apparently the lackluster performance we saw in the clip played on Letterman accurately showed what we could expect from her.

That's the thing, I don't think she was supposed to have total conviction in her opinion. She seemed kind of unsure about whether or not she approved of Fury's methods, but she didn't necessarily disapprove, either. She just didn't seem to know what to make of all this. Which is a nice realistic touch, imo, as I'm sure there are plenty of SHIELD agents she represents who don't know what to make of this new direction for their organization, but it also makes her pretty unnecessary to the overall film. That's why I said it felt like she was being set up for more in a future installment, while this one just served to establish her position at Fury's side and hint at her doubts that might rise to the surface later on.

That's the way I've taken her character's role. It's not supposed to be overly large in this one since she's being set up for something greater in the next set of Marvel movies. I think she signed a similar 9 film deal like SLJ to appear in future movies.

So what you're actually saying is that Maria Hill is the Deanna Troi of the Avengers, always pointing out the obvious? Does she crash the Helicarrier too? You see, whenever Troi was put in command of the ship she always crashed the Enterprise. Maria Hill's Troiness cannot be complete unless she crashes the Helicarrier.

Cobie was simply adorable to watch in this movie.

She really has a very interesting presence and she had the kind of face and expressions that commanded the screen whenever she was on.

She was a minor character and yet you still felt something for her. I'd like to see more of her in future films.

I liked Hill a lot in the movie and thought Cobie did great as her, even if she didn't get a whole lot of screentime she injected a lot of presence into the part for sure. Definitely looking forward to seeing her back in the next batch of Marvel movies and hopefully with an expanded role.

She's an immediate addition to any crush list, too
