The family crest is the best explanation IMO. It feels more fitting to Superman's character.

And I think it the name, Superman, should definitely come from the Kent's.

I think the crests should be assigned to the different councils on Krypton; such as the science council a law/military council and so on and so forth...

and I agree to an extent. I liked how they gave him the name in Earth One, for me it really depends on the story and how big of a part they play. I also like that Lois gave him the name...

I hope it doesn't stand for Superman. It makes Lois look a little dumb to have her name him that.

It should be a family crest, and the Kent's and Clark should have the brains to say
"It kind of looks like an S...for...Superman!"

Family crest, and if not, the Birthright approach of it being a symbol of hope and unity on Krypton.

If the movie were set in the 1940's (it isn't, right?) I'd have loved it. But as a modern take, I'm not sure. The symbol is for me like the trunks arer for other people; you change it too much and then I start feeling it less Superman. I don't know it just looks weird. That long bit at the top looks weird for an S.

But I agree on something; family crest is the best explanation.

This, however to touch on what else you said. I think it makes more sense if the symbol doesn't strictly look like an outright \S/ but something that people from Earth would just believe was an \S/.

The reason I say this is, look at Superman The Movie & in particular Marlon Brando's scenes on Krypton. He is wearing what looks like a very standard & Earthly \S/ symbol on his robes & the rest of the Kryptonians have drastically different style of family crest. Alot of straight lines, dots & there is Jor-El's logo with alot of vibrant curves & distinctly different so of design style.

I love the standard, classic Superman logo. It is hands down one of the most iconic & best comic superhero logo in my opinion, however in Synder/Nolan's film if they are going for something that is going to be as realistic as could be possible all things considered, I would think it would make sense if the logo didn't look strictly classic.. but at the same time not far away from being classic if that makes sense.

I always preferred the emblem to just stand for Superman, mainly because humans being able to make out an S shape is a little...odd. If it were crest, or a sign in Krytonian language, how would humans be able to read it? Ya know?

I always preferred the emblem as being of Kryptonian origin.

BUT...being that new new shield looks like an 'S' in a triangle, it may be that the 'S' does stand for Superman in MOS. I have faith in Snyder & co. and am sure they can pull it off.

I've been a fan of the notion that it's not just one large Kryptonian symbol, but rather, five symbols combined onto a diamond-shaped shield or crest.

This concept was played around with in the New Krypton saga; various houses on New Krypton had the diamond shape but different symbols within. At other times, the outer crest shape was not diamond shape but still included different symbols within.

This is what I'm talking about, if you can't see it:

I should also note that this was the reason I liked Quitely's proposed change to the \S/ in the early stages of developing AS-Superman. If you remove the negative spaces, it still resembles an \S/ but also looks alien.

EDIT: I should note that when the symbols are arranged inside the crest, they appear to create an S to us. But to Kryptonians, it would simply be significant individual symbols arranged (perhaps also in a significant pattern) within the shield.

I would like the S to stand for the house of El crest.

I like the "S" standing for Superman, but I think he should be named that by Pa Kent, not Lois. Then the Kents give him two of his three names, and in my opinion, his real name: Superman. Clark Kent+Kal-El=Superman.

I think it will be misinterpreted by humans as an "S", but it will have an entirely different meaning in Kryptonian. I can imagine Lois asking "So what does the 'S' stand for?", Superman replies "It's not an 'S', it's (gives long sophisticated dicription of it's origin)". Then Lois stands there embarrassed.

I com pletely understand your point and it's good. Still I think the symbol, unlike many other elements, should follow more what's classic than what's realistic.

This would be perfect. I really hope they're going to go this route with the symbol and the characterization.

I always thought the idea of aliens having a writing system similar to English lettering was over the top. It would make more sense for the shield letter to be related to his high school football jersey in Smallville sort of as a tribute to the town that gave him his human morals.
