Lois Lane was created on the same issue of Superman first appearance. She is there since Action Comics #1, from 1938. She was the only other character from Superman mythology that is around since the very first story.

Besides, Lois Lane has a very specific reason to exist and connects to the character (both Clark and Superman) in a way no other does.

The "unknown future" endures for 73 years.

Lana has her own importance, but its not as big as Lois.
