ENTER THE VOID:
![]() ![]() This movie is like a combination of David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. Not too many great photos on the net, but this is the most visually astonishing film I have ever seen. Even more so then 2001.

As there's a lot of personal favorites to choose from, I'm going to make two posts, as the one I'll post, in the end, will barely scratch the surface. So, I apologize in advance for the, soon to be, lengthy post(s).

The Matrix. That first movie blew my mind, and the collective mind of our culture I believe. Totally changed action films forever. It popularized the slow-mo action sequences we see so often in films now.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Love love love this movie. I've always wanted to see a movie do this, just throw realism out the window completely and be hyper stylized and vibrant and energetic and over the top. The way Edgar Wright makes scenes flow into each other is so fun too. I think this movie hints at what a lot of video games could do to stop being terrible flops all the time. They keep taking ridiculous characters and trying to "ground" them, and it never works. A Street Fighter movie should be over the top and vibrant, maybe not to the same extent of Scott Pilgrim, but I think if you did the action sequences in a similar style it would be sweet. Even though this film wasn't huge at the box office, most of the people who actually went to see it loved it and I think it's going to end up being a very influential film for future filmmakers. Tron. Whether you like it or not, I think this movie was pretty cool to look at. Michel Gondry. Instead of listing his films individually, I'll just lump them all together. Gondry is one of my favorite directors ever. Eternal Sunshine, Science of Sleep, Human Nature, Be Kind Rewind... and even Green Hornet. He has such a unique approach to effects. A lot of his techniques go back to old school effects. Lots of in camera stuff, stop motion and etc. Very little CGI. The result is his films effects feel more real then a lot of the super high budget CGI movies. Miyazaki. He's a living legend, his work speaks for itself. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Ponyo, etc. He creates such interesting creatures and mythology in each of this movies, and they way they move is so captivating. Satoshi Kon. I love his films just as much as I love Miyazaki's. Paprika is one of the most gorgeous films ever. Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue are also pretty amazing. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Terry Gilliam always makes some pretty visually interesting films, but for me this one is my favorite. I saw it when I was a kid, there were so many interesting visuals, plus there were boobs so that was a big deal for me back then, haha. Toy Story. The cgi cartoon movie that started them all. Still one of my favorite movies ever, I never grow tired of this film. I know it doesn't seem visually stunning by today's standards anymore, but back then, it especially being the only feature film of it's kind, it was amazing. While the humans of course didn't look to great, the Toys looked awesome, I was impressed by how realistic all the textures looked, and more than anything the damn animation was phenomenal. The way the characters moved, especially Woody, really blew my mind. There's really no reference for how a toy, who doesn't have bones and muscles like we do, would move. They could've easily just had him move like a human, but instead they invented a body language for him that looks convincingly accurate. That's the kinda thing I love about animation. Black Swan. Not necessarily ground breaking with it's visuals, but the way they were used I'd definitely classify as "stunning". Very unsettling. Transformers films. No matter how you feel about these films or Michael Bay, you have to admit they were visually impressive. Even if you hate the actual designs, those robots definitely look like they're actually THERE. They composited them perfectly. They never look CGI for a moment. The complex transformation were just amazing to watch as well. Revenge of the Fallen had numerous flaws as a film, but visually, holy crap watch that forest battle scene in Imax was amazing. In the 3rd film, for the last half of the movie my jaw was on the floor. That huge tentacle decepticon destroying that building and Optimus Prime flying in to sever it's head was definitely some of the best stuff I've seen on a big screen in my entire life. Tekkon Kinkreet. Not the first animated film to use cg in a 2D film, but I think definitely one of the best. They texture map hand-painted backgrounds onto 3d models, and the result is a very detailed organic looking environment. You can watch the first 10 minutes here http://youtu.be/6FfXWg7_AGI Mindgame. Also from the same studio as Tekkon Kinkreet. This movie is kinda hard to describe, they mix very different styles of animation together, it's a pretty trippy looking film. The bit where they're escaping the giant whale is one of the craziest animation sequences ever: http://youtu.be/Yf1qvAE_epc NSFW because some of the characters lose their clothes in the process haha. Aachi & Ssipak. This bizarre, raunchy Korean animated film has some of the craziest action sequences ever. NSFW http://youtu.be/OPNApfhKnVI |

The most incredible looking film ever is surely Blade Runner. It's astonishing. It's like looking at a living, breathing, beautiful other world.

Solaris, the one with George Clooney had wonderful visuals and was beautifully shot too.

I'm quite surprised there's been so little mention of Blade Runner here. I just watched it again for the first time in a while, and every time I see it the visuals impress me more and more. Blade Runner is possibly the most visually impressive film Ive seen. Anyways, off the top of my head...
(No order) Blade Runner Apocalypse Now Empire Strikes Back House of Flying Daggers Every David Fincher film (Especially Se7en IMO) AVATAR Sunshine Alien Kingdom of Heaven The Thin Red Line The Tree of Life Road to Perdition No Country for Old Men The Matrix The Dark Knight Rises

Zodiac. There's something about the way Fincher chose to shoot that, add in the classy CGI use and beautiful city shots. Every shot has a reason and its own little tactic at being memorable.
Trainspotting. The colours, the false floor for the sinking Renton. You see the beauty of life through a grimy window. Who watches the Watchmen? I do. Because every shot is gorgeous. Shutter Island. I like the film, but mainly for the visuals.
