This is all just rumour for now but it comes from the same source that for one tipped a second 3DS circle pad, some details about Wii U and other Nintendo stuff.

Kind of glad. I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but this system sounds so bad and didn't seem all that next gen to me in the first place.

Nintendo's problem is that this generation made them arrogant, the same way the PS2's success made Sony arrogant. Nintendo thinks that because the Wii and DS sold well, they can pretty much get away with anything and people will buy it, but I think they are overestimating how much casual gamers actually care about updating their game systems every generation. Wii was an interesting novelty that people would ask for as a Christmas gift, but Nintendo isn't Apple, and the success of one device hardly guarantees the next-- especially since the "blue ocean" customers today are less and less interested in game systems and more interested in phones and facebook.

Scratch the WiiU... put a ton of support behind the 3DS and show us a new HD system at E3 2012.

The Wii U has seemed like a huge mistake since it was announced. Releasing a finally comparable system at the tail end of a generation is a crazy idea. The gimmick would be used as much as the Kinect or Move have been by 3rd parties, and then the next gen will roll out 1-2 years later and Nintendo will be back getting dumbed down ports of modern games.
Nintendo is in an insanely weird spot. Every new announcement they make keeps dropping their stock prices and they don't seem like they have a plan to turn things around. I don't think a hot pink 3DS is really going to fix the problem, guys. They have also made me extremely revision aware. I refuse to buy a 3DS because I know they will release a new/better version in a year with better battery, better form and hell possibly with a second circle pad. Why buy a Wii U when in 1-2 years they will release a Wii U Plus that fixes all the issues with the original? It's a weird mentality they have settled into this generation, and I don't much like it.

I agree. I wonder how hot Iwata's seat is right now and if that will impact what they do regarding the WiiU (if the issues they are having with it are real)? Time will tell I suppose.

If the WiiU ends up being a failure, I have to wonder if Nintendo will "pull a Sega". I know to a lot of people that may seem far fetched and eye-roll worthy, but Nintendo's shareholders already want them to go multiplatform in the handheld space, but Iwata won't budge on that. Either way, it's going to be very interesting to see what's in store for Iwata and Nintendo at large if the WiiU doesn't set the world on fire.

I'm right there with you man, I really am. With Nintendo getting handily "beat" the previous two generations, both times by newcomers, I'm pretty sure they would have gone that route by now, if it wasn't for their ace in the hole. Nintendo's big secret is that they always, always make a killing on their hardware sales. While Microsoft and Sony view their consoles as a sort of loss leader, Nintendo makes a profit on every console sold. Of course those consoles don't just pop out of thin air. I'm sure the R&D, industrial engineering, as well as ongoing marketing and manufacturing costs for consoles are unbelievably high.
Another advantage Nintendo has is that most of their games have very long legs, selling incredibly well over several years. I'm sure the shareholders have often wondered how much more money they could make if such games were on three platforms instead of just one...

If I can play the core Nintendo games that I have played since I started playing games on the next version of Xbox... I'll be happy. In a way it would suck to see Nintendo turn into a developer only... but... they are obviously a bit out of the loop.
Can you imagine a Zelda title the size of Oblivion... Or Skyrim? If they had a lot of time to focus on creating a HUGE Zelda with almost limitless possibilities... Oh man... |

It would just seem like heresy to play a Mario game on a Playstation. Being their own exclusive brand has kind of been their mainstay, it would feel like selling out.

Well... That's why I said "on the next Xbox." What better way for Microsoft to get that exclusive content that people say they need than to buy up Nintendo.

Now I highly, highly doubt that happens. I don't see Nintendo NOT making systems for quite sometime. Even if they have to forget the home market and just focus on portable gaming.

But yes, I know it's Nintendo's fault. There's always something inferior about their hardware so they're always getting passed over. Carts, mini disks, hardware that's a generation behind. I get so sick of my favorite developer being the one that makes all the mistakes.

They didn't use to. They're being as innovative as they always were, it's just that audiences have started favoring style over substance.

It doesn't surprise me.
I previewed the game this year at E3, and I found it hard to believe they could really make a 2012 release. And they had so few actual games or software to preview for it. 2012 seemed way too early and unrealistic IMHO.

Plus, the E3 Wii U was more or less a proof of concept. We have no idea what changes they will have to make to it and what the final product will be like.

I don't even get where this 'paranoia' was created that nintendo will even go to third party. They had the most successful of the 3 systems last time around. How do you go from first to last? I think to many "competitive" style gamers with 360s and what not (myself included) feel that we are the only market there is out there. When Nintendo has clearly shown thats not the case.
I'm really starting to think Nintendo is smart enough NOT to attack the same markets microsoft and sony choose to try to reach out too. There not the only company that has shown this...take apple. There iPad, it's not really business oriented at ALL. Blackberry tried reaching and showed it's usage for business, and the blackberry had all the workings to be just as successful. Much like a more competitive gamer vs a non-competitive one. Everyone has ALWAYS felt nintedo has been behind..but there market has proved other wise, and the point of a business is to generate revenue/profits. And there doing just that. Why would they change? |

That's because by the time Sonic went multiplatform, Sonic sucked.

Fine, they'd get over it in two weeks. Or three weeks. Whatever. My point is that, if at next E3 for example, Nintendo announces that they've scrapped the WiiU and will instead be focusing on multiplatform development, yes that would be HUGE. It would be beyond huge. Can you imagine if Miyamoto strolled out onto the stage during Sony's press conference and showed a new Zelda on the Playstation 4? It would be the E3 megaton to end all megatons. The internet would ****ing explode! Some would love it and others would be furious, but the fervor would die down in a couple of weeks and people would accept it and move on. It would only be a "big deal" for a very short amount of time.

Won't happen. Nintendo will not give up their first place crown & be stuck to one System & have no control over prices & what not

Yeah I refuse to believe Nintendo is getting out of the console making business.
If the Wii-U doesn't work out they'll just make something else. I still don't know why the heck they claimed 2012 this year. And it did look like they were going to have third party support for the Wii-U on some games.

But, when we move onto the Xbox 3 and the Playstation 4, all those third parties are going to move on too and unless Nintendo puts out yet another new console, they are going to be stuck getting dumbed down ports again. At least this time the dumbing down will mainly just be graphics, and not full on lesser/new games because of the control difference. It just seems like a strange decision to be perpetually behind, despite unique controlling methods.
