Thought it might be cool to have an official place to remember those who have passed on...
![]() Yes, you can go into the light... Zelda Rubinstein, the actress best known for her portrayal of Tangina Barrons Poltergeist has passed away at the age of 76. Rubinstein was hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center about two months ago after suffering a mild heart attack, and taken off of life support just prior to New Years. Zelda worked as a medical lab technician before launching her acting career in her 40s, and made her film debut in the 1981 Chevy Chase comedy Under the Rainbow. The prolific actress accumulated a huge list of film credits which included Frances, Sixteen Candles, Teen Witch, Anguish and most recently Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon and Southland Tales. She was also involved in plenty of activist work, such as forming the nonprofit Michael Dunn Memorial Repertory Theater Company in Los Angeles to help little actors book quality roles, as well as an AIDS activist having played the mother in L.A. CARES (Los Angeles Cooperative AIDS Risk-Reduction Education Service) campaign for AIDS awareness. Genre fans will of course always remember her for her unforgettable performance as Tangina in the Poltergeist trilogy.

He was 75. Though he appeared in Oscar-winning films like "Philadephia" and "Silence of the Lambs," it was in his earlier work -- decidely edgier fare -- that he first attracted the attention of A-list Hollywood directors like Jonathan Demme and Alfred Hitchcock. Early Z-grade films like "Supervixens" established Napier as a go-to tough guy and he deployed his unique brand of wild-eyed bravado to entertaining effect throughout his career on both big and small screens. Napier was able to recount his uproarious life as an actor kicking around from set to set, never truly breaking through, in his entertaining memoir titled "Square Jaw and Big Heart," released in March. The response to his two book-signings at Russo's Books in Bakersfield was so overwhelming that the shop ran out of copies and was forced to issue rain checks to Napier's fans. "He spent a lot of time with each person and he took a lot of time," said Tony Russo, owner of the book store. "When the books came in, we gave them to Charlie to sign and then he put a print from his pictures in the books and said, 'Thank you for waiting for the book.' He would be easy to be a friend with, sit down and talk to or have a beer with. You wouldn not know he was an actor."

11 Decisions That Made STEVE JOBS Become The LEADER Of His Indutry
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES While some of the largest retail chains in the U.S. electronic devices gave no room for Apple products, Jobs came up with the perfect solution: the Apple Store. Since opening the first one in California in 2001, this chain is dedicated 100% to distribute everything Apple, from iPods to advanced desktop Mac. Ten years later, it has over 330 stores in 11 countries, and established itself as one of the banners of the company's success, besides being a readily identifiable icon for consumers. That is how Apple bypassed major retail distributors and made a specialty store model for his audience. GIVE THE CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY WANT Unlike the rest of the industry, Apple never had polls or focus groups conducted during the Jobs era. He was in charge of making customers know what they wanted, even when they had not seen it before. One example is the iPhone, which created the foundations of the tablets industry. "Apple has a great history of making you want (and buy) things you did not think you would need," said Carl Howe, director of consumer research at the Yankee Group consultancy, to The Atlantic. "People often do not know what they want until standing in front of it," Jobs told BusinessWeek in 1998. CONNECT THE DOTS Rather than sell their products as separate sets without common features, Jobs showed that selling the Idea was a stronger tactic. As an integrated view, from music players to advanced video editing systems from Apple are designed to interact with each other, presenting a simple clean interface and an intuitive means for each user. Since the 90s, Apple designs cables and accessories specially created to blend aesthetically with all elements of a series, and includes a quick and specialized setup in a Mac environment. A DIVERSE TEAM Jobs' vision on the development of new technology always rejected the vision of companies like IBM, in which white-collar employees programmed in an almost mechanical manner. His outlook on the development of new operating systems included various personal knowledge that helped achieve the perfection of his designs in many ways. "Part of what made the Mac great is that the people who worked on it were musicians, poets, artists, zoologists and historians, who somehow were also some of the best computer scientists in the world," said Jobs. One of the most famous members of his team was John Sculley, a former president of Pepsi who took Jobs' place as CEO for some years. Jobs offered the job by saying, "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?". THINK DIFFERENT One of the most iconic campaigns of the 90s was Think Different, that abandoned traditional marketing in computer sales in order to deliver the image of a creative artistic tool, one that could also deal with associated productivity on the then Windows PCs. The campaign featured the likes of Yoko Ono, Bob Dylan and Jerry Seinfeld, accompanied by the manifesto of the company, saying: "People who are crazy enough to believe they can change the world are the one who do." In business, the campaign became an ideal to follow, driving the innovation that led the company to its current place. VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
DO NOT EXPLAIN MUCH For Apple, simplicity is bliss. Jonathan Ive, designer of the iMac, iPhone and iPad, once said that "we are totally focused on trying to develop a solution that is very simple; one we can understand clearly as physical beings." The company is known for its design and intuitive interfaces, as well as marketing devices like the iPhone and iPad under the slogan "just works", attracting customers who want the latest technology without advanced knowledge on the subject. This simplicity is linked to the success of the iPhone, with a success that had everybody in America reciting: "There's an app for that," a phrase recorded in the memory of consumers. SELL DREAMS, NOT PRODUCTS As many analysts and fans agree, Jobs was able to engage consumers with a sense of attachment to the brand. It was not products what they wanted to get, but what they represent. People want to identify with them, and so have demonstrated their fervent followers, who come to camp even in the pre-sales of the latest iPhone models. Its products, which have come to present special editions with parts of gold and diamonds, are considered by many as a status object. RELY ON INTUITION As Jobs said during a speech at the U. of Stanford, one must "have courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." Jobs began his work at Apple in 1976 after selling his car to fund the materials needed to create the company's first laptops. Since then, more than 300 patents have been registered in its name, among which are commercial failures like the first handheld organizer (Newton) and hits like the iPhone and iPod series. PARTNER WITH THE ENEMY Can you imagine what it would take do see Pepsi and Coca-Cola form a business alliance? Something like that happened at the MacWorld Expo in 1997, where Bill Gates and Steve Jobs announced the investment of 150$ millions from Microsoft in the company, who had experienced 12 years of financial losses. "The era of competition between Apple and Microsoft is over," said Jobs. "This is about taking Apple back to its initial state, make it able to make great contributions to the industry and become prosperous once again," he said. Years later, Jobs would face Gates back with comments like "Office for Mac is the best program that Microsoft has published." CREATE ATTRACTIVE PRODUCTS As a good salesman, Jobs knew the importance of aesthetics. On his return to Apple in 1996 after the failure of NeXT, while his own computer company focused on developing applications and programming, he realized that Apple products were designed as outdated and unattractive. In 1998, he called a meeting with the developers on their computers and said "You know what is wrong with the company? The products suck, there's no sex in them." More than a decade later, Apple is praised for creating some of the world's best engineered PCs. In 2010, Fortune magazine described Jonathan Ive, designer of the Mac line, as the "world's most intelligent designer." VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
ORIGINAL VISION CHANGE Apple started as a computer company, but Jobs knew it needed to expand to make it successful and profitable. Back in 1996 he predicted that the company should cover new ground, when he told Wired that "the market for personal computers is dead." The launch of Final Cut Pro, one of the first video editing software that consolidated Apple computers as audiovisual tools, was the starting point to accomplish the mission. I met Mr. Napier a few years ago for the premiere of The Goods. Great guy. Loved his performance in Rambo II and DinoCroc is a guilty pleasure of mine.
