Default Best Games To Start Off With?

Hey so, I recently got an Xbox 360, and I really haven't played games at all recently, like literally the last console I had was a PS2.

I'm definitely picking up Arkham City and FIFA 12, but I have no idea what's good beyond those two.

So if you were making like a list of the games that were a complete necessity (I don't really have specific tastes, I love sports, action, rpgs), what would be on there?

Soapy's got it covered lol, I'd add the Deathspank games to that list though.

Yeah, you should really pick up Arkham Asylum before Arkham City. Not really for any story purposes (you get the gist of it), but just because it's a fantastic game and dirt cheap now.

I'd add Shadow Complex and 'Splosion Man to the downloadable games list. Also get the Gears of War Triple Pack, which has the first two games and all downloadable content for the second.

I posted this in a similar thread:

Including games coming out soon & some on reputation alone (that I haven't played fully yet)...I would recommend:

Gears of War (1, 2 & 3)
Mass Effect (1, 2 & 3)
Assassin's Creed (1 - 4)
Halo 3 & Reach (ODST if you like them both)
Batman: Arkham Asylum & City
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Oblivion is great, graphics might seem a bit dated now)
Fallout 3 (haven't seen New Vegas yet)
Call of Duty: Black Ops & Modern Warfare 3
Battlefield Bad Company 2 (for MP only) & Battlefield 3
Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire & Grand Theft Auto IV
Bioshock 1, 2 & Infinite
Crysis 2
Dead Space 1 & 2
Resident Evil 5
Fable II & III
Dragon Age: Origins 1 & 2
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 1 & 2 (only if you like 1 a lot)
Alan Wake, Borderlands & Deus Ex
Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
Forza 4

If you're into beat'em ups - Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Soul Calibur IV (V coming up soon), Mortal Kombat 9, Tekken 6/Super Streetfighter IV or wait for Streetfighter X Tekken & Tekken X Streetfighter.

Actually all that is probably more a get-you-finished deal than a get-you-started one lol.

That's nice, but this is the Microsoft subforum, and the OP specifically mentioned he has a 360. So, Forza 4 is the only racing game you need.

Also, I'm surprised a Halo game isn't the first and foremost name mentioned to a guy who's new to the 360. Halo is THE flagship franchise of Microsoft. I'd highly recommend Halo Reach to get you started (and current) all at the same time. I'd also recommend *against* some of the "outlying" Halo games like ODST and Halo Wars, unless/until you become thoroughly indoctrinated into Halomania (like the rest of us Xbox cultists ).

I'd also highly recommend Gears of War, the first one, at the same time as Halo Reach. Halo and Gears are Microsoft's two heavyweights, and they're both similar but different. Both are essentially shooters versus aliens, but Halo is a cleaner, more cerebral approach, while Gears is a more bro-dude blow-em-up action movie type. Figure out which of those two you like better, and you've found your go-to franchise for the 360.

Halo 3 (If you like it, then DEFINITELY pick up Reach)
Call of Duty 4 (If you like it, then I'd suggest picking up World at War, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops & MW3)
Battlefield 3
Assassin's Creed 2
Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Batman: Arkham Asylum/Arkham City
Marvel Ultimate Alliance/Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
Gears of War 1/2/3 (3 is the best place to start for multiplayer. 2 & DEFINITELY 1 are hard-core only now)
Alan Wake
Left 4 Dead 1/2
Dead Rising 2 or Off the Record (1 might be a little too hard)

Would you like to expound what it is that you think makes Burnout so terrible?

No real-world cars. No real-world locations. No real-world physics/damage models.

It's arcade driving on steroids.

Those are just things that describe the game. None of it speaks to how or why it's bad.

lolwut

Look, Burnout Paradise is an overblown arcade racer, period. It's fine for ADHD types who think Mario Kart is the zenith of racing games; but for anyone looking for real cars, real locations, and real racing physics, it's an utter joke.

Okay... but again, you're not really talking about the quality of the game, you're just explaining how it's not a racing sim.

Would you criticize Gears of War for not having real locations or real weapons or realistic shooting?

This sounds like the insane ramblings of someone who has never played Paradise, or any Burnout game for that matter. If you came to Paradise wanting to do 50 laps around a boring real-world track, than you're doing it wrong.

Also, yes, Burnout is an arcade style racing series. Since when is that a bad thing? Sim-racers are the niche market.
