Default The Holiday Season

I love the fall and early winter. Its a great season. I love the smell of a distant fireplace in the cooling air, the colors of the changing leaves and the sound of them crunching underneath your feet. I love those ridiculous furry boots girls wear (I dunno what it is, I'm a sucker for em). I love the commercials and holiday episodes of my favorite shows. I love the decorations of Thanksgiving and Christmas, the parades, the food and treats. I love the emotional connections you make with loved ones (though, I'll be single for the 3rd year in a row for this).

What do you like about the holiday season? What are some of the things you do that help you celebrate?

For me, one of the things I do is read Calvin and Hobbes comics (I have most of the collections, as well as the big set they came out with a few years ago). When I was a kid, I would get one or two of those books each christmas, so Calvin and Hobbes has become synonymous for that time of year for me.

I love Thanksgiving because we all go to Claim Jumper for their yummy thanksgiving meal.

That's about it though...I really don't do anything for Christmas except maybe a few presents and a church event. I guess i'm just not a festive person. I don't really celebrate much of anything, barely even my own birthday.

Last year, I bought a Christmas tree half off the day after. This year will be the first one I'll have my first 6.5-7' high tree with all my own ornaments. Which are essentially Star Wars ones that I've collected for the past 13 years.

Cool. This year will be my first year in my very own place. I've been living with college roommates, girlfriends, (ex)fiance, and friends since I graduated high school in 03, and just got my own place this past august. I'm not sure if I will get a tree or anything like that (i don't have any decorations of my own). I might grab a small artificial tree from walmart though.

This tree is pre-lit and everything which hopefully will take care of my procrastination tendencies. I just need a tree topper.

Then I'm just throwing my inflatable snowglobe on the front lawn. Nativity set in the dining room. Done and done.

I like to wait until after Thanksgiving before talking about worrying about Christmas stuff. I like celebrating holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving and not treating them like pre-game Christmas and Christmas-halftime and seemingly the rest of the world now sees these two holidays.

I don't mean to make this soley about Christmas. I consider the Holiday season to include Thanksgiving as much as Christmas.

I love this time of year. I can't wait to get started with the X-Mas decorations. I end up putting up several thousands of lights up, both outside and inside, along with a couple of inflatable decorations in the yard. I really love seeing the entire neighborhood lit up and enjoy participating.

Santa Claus parade was in Toronto this weekend past.

Fantastic weather for it.

Only problem, riding home on the subway afterward.

You know it's going to be crowded, we even waited a while (went and got a slice a pizza for lunch).

We managed to get seats, but we were at the beginning of the parade route. The parade was just ending as we headed east and hit other stops that caused crowding.

One woman was on the subway and another one accidently ran over her foot with a stroller. She started swearing a blue streak and saying the other one had no class. Other folks pointed out that her swearing in front of the kids showed less class than not being apologized to for having her foot run over accidently. She didn't like that much.

I'm all set for he holiday season to get rolling. The weather was nice last weekend so I already have my deck and backyard decorated. Tonight is the annual Turkey Testicle Festival at a local bar, Thanksgiving tomorrow followed by more decorating on Friday.

I've finished the majority of my Christmas shopping. I still have to buy stocking stuffers and the gift for our bunnies but those will wait until the week before Christmas. Next on the to do list, "family picture" and the plethora of Chistmas cards that must be sent. Then comes WRAPPING (yikes, I need to buy tape).
