Indeed.

People are really blowing this out of proportion. A little reference to Mr. J wouldn't feel misplaced at all IMO

Something similar to when Dent mentioned that Carmine Falcone was in Arkham will suffice.

Thank you.
Im not saying those two lines was the entire scene. Im saying that scene or atleast those lines are pointless and doesnt need to be there because we know the Joker is behind bars. And since the Joker wont be in the movie, there's no reason to mention him.

The Joker becomes, essentially, the plot-device that you use? The Deus ex machina?

I think it's made clear that the guy is locked up in a padded-cell...forever.

One of my original fanboyish dreams is to see some replica or hint of Batman's past in his trophy chambers in the cave. To see the joker card, and harvey's coin, there would be all kinds of awesome.

Baloney.

Just because a character is not in a movie doesn't mean they shouldn't be mentioned, especially if it's relevant to something being discussed. Harvey Dent being a prime example of that. Carmine Falcone is another.

I was always surprised that Thomas Wayne didn't get a mention in TDK.

Why is this thread called "The Joker sized elephant in the room?" An elephant the size of the Joker is smaller than a normal elephant.

The whole concept of the "elephant in the room" metaphor is to have a huge issue looming but unspoken about. An elephant is huge, the Joker is the size of a typical person.

My thoughts exactly. It's kind of counter-productive.

Yes you are completely right. I mean the Joker shouldnt be brought up for the sake of it unless he is in the movie. There wouldnt be a point.

But if there was a case where the Joker is brought up for a reason(that reason not being opening a plot point without closing it) then its fine. FOr example if Batman starts questioning himself to keep going because he fear that he inspires these guys. That would be a reason.

I think this movie will be amazing with new villains(or whatever you'd like to consider Catwoman), but if Ledger hadn't died I'm positive he'd be in this movie, and maybe he'll get a mention because of the 8-year hiatus. After all, remember one of the last lines..."looks like me and you are destined to do this forever!" I think that's one element Nolan perfected-the ultimate theme that for there to be good, there must be evil, and the fact that the Joker lives to torture Batman but Batman will never kill him.

I would love it if there was mention of Joker breakouts/captures from the 8-year gap. Cuz its pretty obvious that stuff like that would have to take place.

Wouldn't the 8-year-gap mean that y'know... they changed the room and so the Joker is even less prominent in the story?

I swear, by now I'm thinking we'd have had that scene from DK:R where Mr. J's smile returns in happy arkham at the sight of a certain bat's return.

Maybe we'll get an animated tie-in like Gotham Knights where between the 8 years Joker escapes and Batman captures him again

I sincerely hope we do, but Bruce Timm seems to be busy tying in Dark Knight Returns (and possible Strikes Again!) to do that

Perhaps Batman could give his take on the "wanna know how I got these scars" stories, and invent some "wanna know what happened to the joker" stories. Seriously perhaps Alfred could bring it up in a passing conversation with Bruce, like just mentioning how the joker is locked up or whatever as a bit of a nod and closure to that character.

Honestly I doubt there will be more than a mention of him in this. But if I had my wish they would show some unreleased footage of Heath Ledger as Joker that they saved when they found out about his death in this movie.

I wasn't really expecting any Joker at all but considering Harvey Dent is getting some kind of attention or is a part of the plot in this film the Joker being brought up does seem more likely. We aren't going to visually see Joker though that is pretty certain.

We already know he is locked up. What you think the police did to him when they caught him in The Dark Knight? Gave him a warning and told him to not do that again?
