Default The Official NEW Scarlet Spider series staring Kaine thread

After being told that to wait and see about a return of Ben Reilly, being shown a dozen teases we are now getting a new Scarlet Spider series.
Only thing is that it is NOT Ben but Kaine in the suit. And it's a new suit too.
I'm all for this. Though i'd have preferred Ben.
The new Scarlet Spider series goes on sale on January 11th 2012.
The Creative Team is as follows:
Writer: Chris Yost
Artist: Ryan Stegman
Inker: Michael Babinski
Colours: Marte Gracia
Letterer: Joe Caramagna

Our first teaser was this:

Then it was altered to this:

to fit into Spider-Island

Next up were a bunch of interviews and finally this picture:

Then came an official look at the new suit:

We also got an un-coloured version from Ryan himself:

Next up we have Scarlet Spider's first appearance story wise with this Point One cover:

Actually guys, the Point One story is NOT a part of Scarlet Spider #1.
It was created just for Point One...

I figured that a lot of people would overlook this by accident. That's why I posted it.
When Scarlet Spider v2 comes out, I'll unspoiler the Point One pages.
Houston, Texas is where Kaine is going to be "stationed."

Also, I now wonder if that Ben Reilly "untold tale" is actually a Kaine "untold tale," the one where he was a janitor...
Also, Kaine said he is not a genius, I think thats wrong. He's as smart as Peter. I hope they don't make him just a generic dumbed-down Spider-powered Peter (no OMD/BND jokes)...

I think the change of a city to a place like Houston may fit this well. It's a different sort of setting, if you ask me.

I'm probably the only one who thinks this, but I believe it should've been set in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Then we'd get some old cast back... Connor/Conner Trevane (sp) at least...

***
EDIT:
Just pulled out Web of Spider-Man #124
Connor Trevane
***
Double EDIT:
Amazing Spider-Man #400
Detective Raven is the one from Salt Lake City.
also, I knew I should'nt have, but I started reading it.
Seeing Ben talk about getting stuck in the tree... still makes me laugh
then i got to it... i'm now all teary...

I only registered to say.... this reads like the best of the Ben Reilly stories did. I'm really impressed and I think the writer is tapping into the grumpy/angst that made Ben fun to be around. The levels of light and dark were always more contrasted in the best Ben stories and here we are with Kaine who will hopefully deliver even more of that!

Bravo!

I totally agree.
Ben was like Peter, just without a life, so he wandered the country and built up something himself.
After Spider-Island, Kaine is exactly that. Just that his life was so much more miserable over the last years with clone degeneration, constant pain and only death to look forward to.
Now he is healed, got a second chance and has to live with his decisions of the past, the guilt of things a man did who had nothing to loose.
So Kaine is a more intense version of who Ben Reilly was, and I really really liked that story.

And since it is totally clear that Kaine is a clone, I hope they will never ever do the same mistake again and kill him off, because he is a different shade of Peter Parker totally worth of having his own life and his own stories.

I am totally looking forward to the new Scarlet Spider series.

Same here. I can't believe that so many people over the years have missed why Reilly is necessary and cool. Then we get Kaine given a REAL life to live and we get it to the max! I am still sorry Ben died, it was a mistake but this is possibly the best way of bringing back his mojo without killing PP75. (A classic imho though I hated Ben dying the story was frigging perfect in execution. If only OMD had been such a good story.)

World of The Scarlet Spider: Kaine

Chris Yost introduces the man behind the mask of the new Scarlet Spider

By Ben Morse
The latest webslinger in the Marvel Universe may have a known name and familiar face, but that’s about it.

When SCARLET SPIDER #1 swings into stores on January 11, Peter Parker’s clone, Kaine, lands in a new city—Houston, Texas—where he’ll encounter new friends, new threats and build a new life for himself. Spinning out of Spider-Island, SCARLET SPIDER promises a wallcrawling experience the likes of which you’ve never seen.
All this week, with the help of writer Chris Yost and artist Ryan Stegman, we’ll be exploring the World of The Scarlet Spider in order to prepare you for a hero unlike any other.

Up first, we examine the tortured soul who will take up the Scarlet Spider identity, Kaine. From his early days as a fractured clone of Peter Parker to his recent ordeals and sacrifices in saving New York City, Kaine brings a wealth of experience—not all of it good—to his new role.

How did you first encounter Kaine as a reader?
Chris Yost: I've been reading Marvel since about 1977, and seriously collecting since about '84, so I experienced Kaine firsthand as the Clone Saga rolled out across the various Spider-books in the 90's. I remember really liking his costume, and having no idea who the heck he was, just that he was bad news, and liked purple.
For those not familiar, how would you best sum up who Kaine is?
Chris Yost: Kaine was revealed to be another clone of Peter Parker, but he was different than Ben Reilly, the successful clone of Peter; he was stronger, more powerful and hideously scarred, both physically and emotionally. Kaine was a failed attempt by Professor Miles Warren, aka The Jackal, to clone Peter. He was an experiment gone horribly wrong.

What traits does Kaine share with Peter Parker and what sets him apart?
Chris Yost: Kaine shares Peter's DNA, but that's about it. He doesn't have his memories; he doesn't have his upbringing, his moral code, Aunt May, Uncle Ben, none of it. His first memory was getting thrown away by his 'father' the insane Jackal. They had similar powers, but after the events of Spider-Island, that seems to have changed as well.
What further makes Kaine unique from Ben Reilly and any other clone of Peter Parker?
Chris Yost: Ben thought he was Spider-Man for a while; he had the memories, the emotional connections, and the sense of responsibility—Kaine has none of it.
The other little thing that makes them different is that from the day he was born Kaine was dying. He was a failure, and his cells were breaking down. Death was inevitable.
How does Kaine’s troubled past play into the man he is today?
Chris Yost: Kaine is shaped by his experiences, and those experiences are pretty horrible. Having The Jackal as his father, being discarded as a failure, knowing you're going to die—he's a different person. His entire biology was breaking down, including his mind. He became violent, obsessive; Kaine was not a happy man.
How have Kaine’s goals shifted from when he was introduced to today?

Chris Yost: After the events of Spider-Island, Kaine was cured. He was no longer scarred in body or mind, no longer dying; for the first time, he was alive. His previous goals were basically to find a cure for himself and torment Ben Reilly, and now both of those issues are gone.
His future is a blank slate. For the first time in his life, he gets to live.
What effect did knowing and fighting alongside Peter Parker have on Kaine?
Chris Yost: I think it was weird for Kaine; this man that he's fought and resented so many times, now fighting alongside him. Kaine may be cured, but he's still very much a product of what he was. His instincts are still the same.
But now, there's something nagging at him, like a little Peter Parker on his shoulder. And it's going to be a struggle for him.

Will Kaine always be a loner or does he want to have friends and allies?
Chris Yost: I think his instinct is to be a loner, but he's going to find himself in situations where he's got to deal with other people, even take care of them. And it's against his nature. It's not something that's going to come easy to him.
How does your approach to writing Kaine contrast from past portrayals of the character?
Chris Yost: Kaine's going to have the same killer instinct, the same gruff demeanor, but now he's going to realize how monstrous he was. Normal people don't do the things he's done, and he's starting to realize that. He's seeing the world with a clear mind for the first time in a long time. Kaine is a man who's probably not enjoyed himself much in his life. Things like laughter and happiness are probably pretty foreign to him. Now killing people? That comes easy. Too easy.
What have been the most significant events in Kaine’s life to date and how will they impact his immediate future?

Chris Yost: Birth. Death. Rebirth. Cure. These things will come up throughout Kaine's journey.
What inspires Kaine to become The Scarlet Spider?
Chris Yost: Kaine has no desire to be The Scarlet Spider, let's be clear. He's no hero. He wants nothing more than to stick his feet in the sand and start enjoying this new life that he's been given, this second chance. But life gets in the way. The past comes back to haunt. And after his experiences, he's starting to learn that life has value.
Even other people's lives.
Tomorrow, we take a look at the Scarlet Spider’s new home: Houston, Texas. And remember to pick up SCARLET SPIDER #1 on January 11!

I wonder if this will be a good place for new readers to start or too continuity heavy.

Ok, so, what i don't get is this:
They keep saying that Kaine is on the run from EVERYONE...
They said it would be revealed in the epilogue - it wasn't.
Why is Kaine running from The Avengers? The Future Foundation? The F.B.I.? The NYPD?
If anything, he's only running from himself and his past and Peter (in a way)

Gee, maybe because he's wanted for murder? He did go to jail for the murder of Louise Kennedy among others and escaped before serving out his sentence.

Chris Yost speaks on the city where Kaine will hang his mask as the new Scarlet Spider

Today, we discuss Kaine’s new home and the base of operations for our Scarlet Spider: Houston, Texas. While Marvel heroes have typically settled in New York City and occasionally branched out to the west coast of the United States and across the pond to Europe or Asia, the Lone Star State remains relatively unexplored. Yost explains how he plans to change this in SCARLET SPIDER.
SCARLET SPIDER #1 inked preview art by Ryan Stegman Why Houston as the setting for this series?
Chris Yost: Spider-Editor Steve Wacker brought it up. I think the conversation pretty much went, “How about Houston?” and I said, “Great.” The Marvel Universe is a vast place, and yet pretty much everything is set in New York. So expanding that world—and not like visiting the Negative Zone or Savage Land or that kind of thing—immediately sets things apart. So we've got The Scarlet Spider in Houston, the X-Men in San Francisco, and I'm assuming the Great Lakes Avengers are still out there somewhere.
On top of that, it fit perfectly with the story and where Kaine is; he helped defeat the Queen, he aided Spider-Man and the Avengers in Spider-Island, but he is still a wanted man, a fugitive and a killer. Kaine has killed people, and he has to assume that once the Avengers find out exactly who he is, they'll act on it. So in POINT ONE and SCARLET SPIDER #1, we find Kaine doing something immensely logical: get the hell out of New York. He's heading to Mexico, but his stop in Houston gets complicated.
What are the coolest aspects of Houston as a setting?
Chris Yost: Houston is a great city. It's got amazing architecture, amazing culture, music, food, one of the biggest medical centers in the country, close proximity to the Gulf and good people. This is the city that took in thousands of refugees from New Orleans after hurricane Katrina.
The city has its own personality, much like New York does. And it's a bit of an underdog city, never getting the recognition it deserves as a major American city, which I liked.
SCARLET SPIDER #1 inked preview art by Ryan Stegman How does Houston differ from other locales in the Marvel Universe?
Chris Yost: Well, it's pretty much unexplored, so that's something. They don't get a ton of super-heroics or super-villainy down there, as far as we know, so it brings some freshness to the book. In New York, you assume there's nothing the people haven't seen. Spider-Man swinging by? Annoyance. Galactus showing up? Must be Tuesday. But in Houston, there's going to be a very different reaction to Scarlet Spider, one that will surprise even him.
What new challenges will Houston itself offer for a webslinging hero?
Chris Yost: Well, as every comic book reading Houstonian on the Internet has pointed out, Houston doesn't have as many skyscrapers as New York, so webslinging around is going to be a different experience. Kaine is going to deal with it in an amazing, unheard of way on occasion: by issue two, he'll actually drive a car. He might have to hop on a bus, stick to the side of a truck—the possibilities are limitless.
It's also really humid there. Sweating will be an issue. Grackles are a problem. Houston will offer some challenges, but it's not like Godzilla lives there. The biggest challenge is the people he's going to deal with, and starting a new life.
How does the fact that Houston is not a place populated by familiar characters affect how you write this series?
Chris Yost: In some ways, it's hard. If you want a guest star, if you want Scarlet Spider to bump into the FF or something, you have to manufacture a reason. In New York, everyone's right there. But it gives us the opportunity to actually create new characters. New heroes, new villains, new supporting cast members; this is the House of Ideas, after all. Artist/superstar Ryan Stegman and I are very excited about starting to populate Houston.
SCARLET SPIDER #1 cover by Ryan Stegman How much research have you done about Houston and how will that knowledge play into the series?
Chris Yost: It's ongoing. We've been pouring over photos and maps and history, we're taking trips down there to experience it firsthand, we've had a few Houstonites reach out to us and offer to help—we want this to feel legitimate, not like we checked out Wikipedia for five minutes. Issue #3 is a full-on “spend time in Houston” issue, where Kaine gets to go out on the town. Yes, he wrecks part of it, but this is where we get to know the place.
What types of things are you looking forward to doing with this setting?
Chris Yost: We want to take advantage of everything that Houston has to offer. We look forward to showing a whole “new” city of the Marvel Universe get torn up. We want Damage Control to have to open offices down here.
Tomorrow, we take a look at the Scarlet Spider’s new supporting cast. And remember to pick up SCARLET SPIDER #1 on January 11!
