Of course Uncle Ben is going to die. That's a given with Spider-Man's origin. I'd say it's even more important than the spider bite.

Well...

I'd say that's equally important.

No spider bite, no Spider-Man.

Without it he'd just be...Man.

Do you want to see Man the movie? :P

I'm talking about as far as what is most important to show in a telling of the origin. I'm more interested in the why than the how. Uncle Ben's death is Spider-Man's raison d'être. Without Uncle Ben's death, Spider-Man wouldn't be a crimefighter.

Meh.

They're still equally important.

One is the reason why he does what he does, another is the explanation of how he has the ability to do what he does.

Very true. It's what made Spider-Man who he was. If it wasn't for that, he'd just have the powers, and that's it.

Agreed. I'm more interested in seeing why Peter Parker fights crime. How he got his powers is much less important. The former deals with Peter Parker as a character, the latter doesn't really add anything to the character in and of himself.

If you're going to show Uncle Ben's death, you might as well show the bite. They happen within days/weeks of each other.

If I had to skip one, I'd skip the bite and see Uncle Ben's death. The truth is that there's no significance to the spider other than a source of power. It's a plot device that isn't part of a deeper allegory, nor does it touch upon themes other than possibly the randomness of fate and the unpredictability of life.
Uncle Ben's death is what leads him to being the person Peter is. I'll take character development over a plot device anyday.

Can the general audience make that distinction? The general audience was calling avatar 'dancers with smurfs' purely because the main protagonist went native. They will see the basic concept of Spidey gaining his powers. Again.
Sure, Spidey's origin has been told a dozen times in the comics and fans are used to the concept but were not talking about the comics were talking about the movies and were not talking about fans were taking about Joe bloggs down the street.

If it were me making the movie I wouldn't touch the origin with a barge pole. Get on with it and anything the audience needs explained tell it in flashbacks. Essentially spider-man 4 with different actors, costume and tone.

CBMs in the near future I'm most looking forward to at this moment: 2) Thor 2, 3) Man of Steel, 4) The Amazing Spider-Man 2, 5) Guardians of the Galaxy (would be higher in the list if it wasn't for how much I hate the film Super from the same director).

That's going the be one aim when Sony starts marketing this, to make that distinction FOR the audience. While myself and others really enjoyed the first trailer, it didn't really do much for the general audience, unfortunately.

Hoping this next trailer turns things around.

I think the general audience just isn't excited to see Spider-Man's origin again after only 10 years, and I can't blame them, so trying to use that as the selling point like the "teaser" trailer did was a huge mistake, in my opinion.
