I don't think any of the other movies playing this weekend did that well either though I don't think Immortals will have strong legs. The real test will be the international box office and so far it's doing alright.

I was already sold on Henry Cavill. I'm on record already as being a big fan of Blood Creek. But I just saw Immortals, and while his character was very shallow, and as such, there wasn't too terrible much for him to do dramatically, he showed his physical presence in spades. This guy is the real deal. He's going to OWN this role.

‘Man of Steel’: Henry Cavill got ‘essential’ insight in ‘Red Son’

Nov. 21, 2011 | 3:37 a.m.

Just how heavy is Superman’s cape? Ask Henry Cavill, the British actor who has the weight of history, expectations and a blockbuster budget all sitting on his broad shoulders.

Cavill will portray the last survivor of the planet Krypton in “Man of Steel,” the 2013 release that Warner Bros. hopes will launch a franchise to fill the void left by Harry Potter’s graduation from Hogwarts and Christopher Nolan’s pending departure from Gotham City.

The film has been shooting in Vancouver but Cavill made a quick trip to Los Angeles recently to promote the film “Immortals” and he sat down with our Geoff Boucher for a lengthy interview that led to a Los Angeles Times cover story on that mythology film and the actor’s own life odyssey.

There was plenty that didn’t make it into the story — most of it about “Man of Steel” — and you’ll find it in the Q&A below, including Cavill’s interest in “Red Son” and Mark Millar’s alternate “history” that imagines what would have happened if baby Superman’s rocket had landed in the Soviet Union.

GB: Superman and Clark Kent are two sides of the same coin — is there one of them that you have better or quicker affinity for when you walk on to the set?

HC: Hmmm. I have to be very careful what I say, only because I’ll get excited and talk about my process and then I might reveal too much stuff. Both are difficult and easy to play in their respective ways. Essentially, yes, one is a disguise but the one that’s not a disguise is so unreal that brings difficulties of its own with it. I mean, once the shroud is cast off, yeah, there’s that — but he can fly. [Laughs] Overall, there’s no one that’s easier or less easy than the other. It is a lot of fun having two characters in one role which are so intertwined with each other. It’s the same person, definitely, but it’s the presentation. And that is fun.
Quote:
HC: I really liked “Death of Superman” and “Return of Superman,” those are my favorite ones, and “The New 52” is great stuff and “Earth One,” although I know people think that is a mixed bag. With “Red Son,” I thought it was interesting as a different perspective. It was out there and I like that. It was essential to my character research, too. When you’ve got two polar opposite viewpoints of the same character, you will see what the authors consider the important baseline trend. I got to see that and see the different ways he would have developed and that was very useful to me. And because we are retelling the story and we are doing our own reinvention and a modernization for the screen, I get the opportunity to add my own interpretation of how he developed. So that was cool to look at “Red Son” and see what changed, what didn’t change and what that reveals about the baseline of Superman. You can find what is essential to Superman and what is nature vs. nurture by locating that baseline.

Sounds like he considers Clark to be the disguise and Superman as the real identity. Which is correct.

But he also says they are the same person. I took it as "Metropolis Clark" is a disguise.

I wonder how different "Metropolis Clark" will be to the Clark we see in Smallville or Alaska etc.

I thought everything he said was brilliant, and shows how much he understands the character, and how to approach portraying him.

Sounds to me as if he were spitting in the face of Shuster and Siegel.

Watch, "you know who" will be in here soon spouting off about how Snyder doesn't get it and is totally disrespecting Shuster and Siegel.

Why?

Cavill just basically told us that in this interpretation Superman (or Kal-el, however you want to see it) is the real person.

Which is precisely how Shuster and Siegel concieved him.

I would think Kuro will be incredibly happy about it...

I know that, but he just seems to find something wrong in everything that is said or done.

I understand that he is usually the voice of the pedant... But he's not insane.

This is obviously very good news for someone on this side of the 'who's real?' Arguement.

The news makes me happy, and I'm not religiously on either side. But what he said is basicallly exactly what I've been saying on the characterisation thread for weeks.

IMO that is a PERFECT way of putting it.

We could have used Cavill over in that thread

I'm liking what I'm hearing. Now I know Cavill can talk the talk, but can he walk the walk. Immortals was a good indicator that he potentially could.

Can he fly the fly?

It seems as if Henry Cavill has the same sort of humility about being Superman that Chris Reeve had. I like that.

When Cavill is saying that one is disguise, I assume that he is referring to Metropolis Clark Kent who works as a reporter in Daily Planet.

It is always good to know that Cavill has been reading so many Superman stories, especially Red Son, Death Of Superman and Superman Earth One.

I think Superman can be divided into three personalities, the true farm boy Clark, Metropolis reporter Clark Kent and Man of Steel. I liked what Singer said in an interview -

Quote:
“They always ask, which is the costume and which is the disguise? In reality both are his identities. There’s a bit of showmanship in being Superman; a bit of the way you present yourself; and there’s definitely a character in Clark, a charade he’s putting on to make himself awkward and invisible in the office. But he is the Clark raised on the farm by his parents, and I never wanted to lose that."

I suppose there is zero chance of us seeing any sneak set pics of that though, is there?

Totally. It's a role he's wanted for such a long time, and I think he sees it as just as much of a dream come true as we fans do. He's a perfect fit.

Particularly love this line:

Quote:

Yup, and now I've gone back to the impulse to yell out 'oh I just LOVE him' in a squealy girly voice again.

You're partially correct. Clark the reporter is a disguise. Clark, from Smallville, is not.
