As an avid X-Men fan, thats great news to me, I really hope he comes back as I found FC to be superb.

Ah yes, forgot about that, surely he would realise that not returning would add fire to the rumours he is the father though? Think it would be smarter if he did return.

MvAvoy and Fassbender have said in interviews they have talked ideas about the sequel with him though, so that gives me hope.

Talking don't equal doing. Were that the case it'd have been him and Goldman hired from the start to write instead of Kinberg.

True, but i'm pretty sure he wrote the first draft of the last movie as well. We'll see I guess, but thanks to you my hopes are significantly lowered . I suppose Singer could always direct in his absence.

I don't think John Candy should direct for two reasons:

.) He is dead.
but more importantly
.) he's a better actor than director

Joe Wright
If you think about it, Wright may be the best choice here. "Pride & Prejudice" and "Atonement" showed off his knack for injecting modern touches into classical tales. The under-rated "Hanna" proved he can easily pull off badass, yet nuanced action. Wright strikes the balance that made Branagh such an inspired choice.

Rian Johnson
Johnson is poised for a huge breakout in 2012. He screened an unfinished version of his upcoming sci-fi action film "Looper," and the reactions were outrageously positive. He can tackle genre in clever ways without ever being too self serious. (See "Brick" and "The Brothers Bloom.") He'll be the director everyone will be talking about this time next year, so Marvel should snap him up as quickly as possible.

Duncan Jones
He's already been to space with the indie hit "Moon," and this year, Jones took on a bigger budget and a wider release with "Source Code." In both cases, he has taken outlandish premises and grounded them with believable characters, something that Norse gods and their domestic issues need.

Kathryn Bigelow
One of the best action directors out there, Bigelow could make a brilliant "Thor 2." Look no further than the film she won an Oscar for, "The Hurt Locker." There you have tight, tense action with a brain. Bigelow could be the director to give the emotional back bone that was lacking in the first "Thor."

Joe Cornish
Cornish earned some serious geek cred this year with the aliens in the projects film "Attack the Block," plus he's already been working on the screenplay for a different Marvel superhero. His work on "Ant-Man" with Edgar Wright will make the perfect appetizer for a directorial outing with "Thor 2."

I don't see why the hell they'd want him. He's done some Buffy and Lost stuff, but he hasn't directed any films. He wrote Cabin in the Woods with Joss, though.

He directed CITW as well. But since that's not even come out yet we have no idea how good or not it is. But he has worked with Hemsworth before.

but i think that cabin in the woods been completed for about a year now, it's just been bouncing around looking for a distributor, so chances are somebody from marvel has seen it, at least a rough cut. they might have felt that Goddard showed promise... if there's any credence to this rumor.

I could see that. He's cheap and has some nerd-cred. Knowing Marvel, they'll want to commit to a deal before Cabin in the Woods opens as to avoid any negotiations concerns, i.e. if that flick pops, then suddenly Goddard's stock goes up.

I don't see why not. Nolan didn't have a huge filmography before Batman Begins nor Singer before X-Men, etc.

I wouldn't be adverse to this, but I don't think Tarsem would mesh well, I don't see him being all that receptive to studio input, strikes as one of those self-appointed "maverick artist" types. plus, he's said in interviews that he isn't a fan of superhero movies, calling them "comic strip movies." but who knows, nobody forsaw kenneth braunagh taking on a superhero movie so who knows, same goes for zack snyder making a superhero movie, so who knows.
