Woman in Black Review

Set at the beginning of 20th century from around 1901-1910, Radcliffe stars as a young solicitor (Lawyer more or less) Arthur Kipps who has a 4 year old son Joseph with Arthur’s dear wife having died during childbirth. Arthur is assigned with handling an estate, the Eel Marsh House of England. This is the basic pitch, Arthur Kipps going to the country side with a haunted mansion, superstitious and cowardly farm people with aristocratic nobles in the mix and something more and the supernatural.

The atmosphere in the movie, the setting, the clothing and the music is all really well executed with high production value. It’s got this really haunting feel to it all, the movie tries hard to get you those scary jump scenes with loud music or a scream coming at you when you’re supposed to be scared, but to the film’s credit I think they also play the “ha, gotcha” trope with making the audience think this is an obvious scary jump scene, but then it isn’t but it’s the scene right after it or nothing at all.

I was pleased to see the actor Ciarán Hinds play a supporter character in this movie and he comes off both sympathetic and likeable, as the central horror theme around the village and mansion era is that the children are dying and a vengeful spirit is haunting the mansion.

I was very entertained by this and I thought Daniel Daniel Radcliffe was a good sport as well; I would have liked him to have more facial hair, because I was having a hard time believing such a young man would already be a father and a working lawyer.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. It sets the scene well; I was always on the edge of my seat, never bored. It’s not the most original scary movie out there but its good horrifying entertainment.
