This book won't sell 8 million copies in a day but no one is expecting it to.

If she wanted to appeal to her same fans she would have written a similar book. Clearly, she wants to try out something new to see the reception she gets. Shes a writer, I'm sure she loves to write. So does it really matter that much if the same fan base picks up her book or not?

Is this really becoming the debate? I think we all need to take a long glance at that link to Gaiman's site a few posts up. Writers don't belong to the audience. And the audience doesn't dictate what gets written. That's why they're the audience and not the artist. And if a writer switches genres, but keeps up the quality regardless....what is the debate again?

I think her reach extends well beyond just a YA/Children's book crowd. I mean, it's not like ****ing R.L. Stine has decided to write a sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or something...

The vacancy is in the female protagonist's vagina, right?

If you subtract only those that are fans of her because of Harry Potter that's essentially her entire readership.

Since she's only published Harry Potter, how do we know that?

Hmm, I'm interested in this. As a writer who likes switching genres I hold no beef toward the woman. I wish her the best.

Has a release date been set yet?

Your argument is based on the faulty assumption that HP fans will eat up anything Rowling does.

Why would her reach extend beyond fans of YA/Children's books when that's all she writes? I don't understand the logic.

You understand that not just children read the HP books, yes? There isn't an age limit. They aren't age 9 and under ONLY.

Plus the kids who read Harry Potter are adults now... who would be likely to read adult books.

J.K. Rowling will likely have a nice place in their hearts and so it'd be a sure bet they'll give her book a shot.

I'm giving her a shot based souly on the fact that I enjoyed Harry Potter so much.

That doesn't automatically mean that those same adults will gravitate towards her new book.

Doubtful. They might read more fantasy if she wrote it, but it's unlikely they'd pick up a regular fiction novel written by her simply because they liked HP.

Some people follow favorite authors regardless of what genre the book is.

By adult book, are we talking porn?

It doesn't mean they won't either.

I'm one of those people. I will read absolutely anything that Michael Stackpole, for instance, puts out whether it be fantasy, sci-fi, horror, whatever. I also know that I'm far from alone in this behavior.

Uh, not based on the description and the fact it's not listed as erotica.

They would be in the minority since most will not follow. This is why publishers discourage authors from jumping from one genre to another.

Based on trends and past history, most average readers do not follow an author to another genre, especially if that genre is wildly different than the one the author has established themselves in.

Well, I heard about her book too. Everybody is judging the book by its cover. All I understand is that the book will be an adult fiction.
Publisher just released the cover. The cover is red and has x in the middle.
Behind the cover: 512 pages, which will arrive in bookstores September 27

It would be amusing if she reinvented herself as the next Joseph Heller.

What history do you mean? Grisham jumped genres successfully, so did James Patterson, Julie Moffett, Dave Barry, Nora Roberts, Joyce Carol Oates, Iain Banks, Clive Barker, Sarah Dessen, Jon Green...

Read some of it in Barnes and Noble. She makes a Jay-Z reference. I had to catch myself from laughing out loud in the store.
